It's been fun
I've been hoping for the past six months that I would be able to find more time to devote to SC, but unfortunately that does not appear to be likely for the foreseeable future. At the same time I've become increasingly tired of online political discussion in general, which now feels repetitive and predictable. I very much support the mission of SC and would like to see the site continue to grow, but I don't think I'm currently in a position to be an administrator/editor/contributor.
I would like to finish up a few loose ends -- I want to write another post addressing sanctions, another post on race in the 2008 elections, and maybe something else here or there. After I finish up I'll probably still drop in here and there. I'll do whatever I can to assist SC behind the scenes.
Thanks to everyone I've argued with, agreed with, or learned from. This is a unique blog with many insightful posters spanning the political spectrum. I look forward to seeing it continue to evolve. If you will permit the liberty of a few reflections, I'd emphasize that SC is like a friendly neighborhood bar -- you can disagree vehemently without being disagreeable, and at the end of the day go home friends to come back to argue again tomorrow. SC works best, I think, when we're not too quick to assume we're correct, and when we're each willing to stay dispassionate and avoid personal jabs even in the midst of heated debate.
Anyway, this isn't really goodbye, like I said I'll be around (sans admin hat) for at least a little while, but I wanted to let people know as soon as I had decided. I know the site is in good hands, and it's been a pleasure to write here for the past several years.

Well, OK, yeah, the family comes first. And I share your sentiments, but I'm hopeful that 2009 will bring new grist for the mill. It will be nice to put this Administration behind us and focus instead on what we can and should do, not what we did. Although I'm already getting a bit of the "oh we'd love to do X and X is what we stand for and believe in, but we can't because of George" vibe already. I hope I'm wrong. Not necessarily because I support everything the Democrats claim to support, but because it hasn't been all that enjoyable watching decent Republicans (people, not politicians) having to stomach the reality of their party's actions, and I hope not to see a replay of that with the Democrats over the next eight years.
But the moderate voice is pretty thin here already'; I'm going to miss your posts.

I'm not sure that the internet
encourages "purple" positions. But it's good to see you and others carry that flag. The hall monitor hat is no fun, but your occasional gentle unofficial nudges for civility seem to work well.
I don't know how the Democrats will do, I don't have a lot of faith in Congress in general and expectations are absurdly high for the incoming administration. We'll see, I suppose.

You are truly a good human being. And I don't mean it lightly. From all my interactions with you, I've been extremely impressed with your conduct and with your desire to help.
