An American Christmas Carol

(We join our play in progress as the first spirit gives some much needed advice to our new president)

TJ: Barraack... (Unearthly sound calls out)

TJ: "It is me Barack, Thomas Jefferson".

BO: "Michelle wake up".

TJ: "No no, don't do that Barry, I've seen what you're dealing with there. Oh, it is okay if I call you Barry, isn't it"?

BO: "Oh sure, Tom".

TJ: "That's Mr Jefferson". "Barry listen, we only have a moment and I have something very important to remind you of".

BO: "Well now, with all due respect Mr Jefferson, I appreciate the..."

TJ: "Barry". "Barry shut up and listen to someone who knows a little something about America for once, our countrys very future is at stake here".

Wow....

That was incredibly lame.

Please tell me you got that somewhere else and didn't make it up yourself.

I'm pretty sure you didn't come up with anything nearly as clever over the past 8 years as Bush was turning the Clinton surpluses into record deficits.

Disingenuous, Mr. Centinel.

I survived the Bush Administration

………… parent

Well, considering Obama has spent as much as he has

and makes GW look like a spendthrift, well now those two are not even comparable.

Who's being disingenuous now, Mr. Mover?

I don't think that word means what you think it means. :)

Common misconception, but spendthrift means the exact opposite of what I think you intend to say. (Although I agree Bush was a spendthrift!)

Sorry, but you must be confused.

the Clinton surpluses

There never was a surplus.  We have been carrying a monotonically increasing public debt the entire time.

UPDATE:

Year Gross Federal Debt*
1992 4,001,787
1993 4,351,044
1994 4,643,307
1995 4,920,586
1996 5,181,465
1997 5,369,206
1998 5,478,189
1999 5,605,523
2000 5,628,700
2001 5,769,881
* in $Millions US
Source: Government Printing Office

At no point in time did Clinton ever reduce the federal debt.  Any claims of there being a surplus are illusory at best.

True

Clinton still did a comparitively decent job though:

Obama's probably not going to do nearly as well (remains to be seen I guess), but he came in under some pretty rough circumstances.

And no thanks to a Republican Congress that swept into office

...running on things like the Contract with America, promises to be fiscally responsible, and having forced the issue down Clinton's throat, right?

Clinton would have much rather got health care reform and run around like a spending nut, but it wasn't in the cards for him.

Clinton, Bush, ah dude they're just panzies compared to Barack Obama.

Now let's just look a little closer at where this is all leading us, shall we?

Wow, you can stop now!

I believe you!  I believe you!  Things really CAN be true but misleading!  You're the master!  :)

Unfortunately I haven't fallen victim to your attempted deception.  Can anyone tell me why they would have chosen to graph this particular variable, level of debt increases?  Could it perhaps have something to do with the effect that has on the visual output relative to the same information having been graphed as the total budget?  Hmmm.

I will correct that tomorrow if I can find the time.  That should provide a much less misleading picture of the situation and expose this particular graph for what it is.  It should make an interesting comparison.

And why have we left Obama's budget off of this graph?  That should also make an interesting addition too.  But of course I will be happy to provide BOTH versions for comparison purposes there as well.

It would have been too

difficult for you to mention that gross debt includs debt held by Government accounts (highway, medicare, social security)?  "Federal debt" can only mean debt owed to the federal government to entities outside the federal government; if I owe myself a milion dollars I don't really owe anything.

Here are the real numbers, from the same document two columns over, that shows the debt held by the public.  The Federal Government took in more money than it paid out from 1997-2000.  That it moved the surplus and then some to SS, medicare and highway accounts does not mean its debt increased: the interest on those treasuries is paid to... the federal government.

1997 3,772,344
1998 3,721,099
1999 3,632,363
2000 3,409,804
2001 3,319,615
2002 3,540,427

The debt went up again in 2002 because contrary to right-wing fantasy, tax cuts don't increase revenue (duh).

Guess what the Bush budgets did with respect to money borrowed from the trusts?  Do you think they added it to the Federal Debt?  Hah.  Al Gore kept babbling about a "lockbox" because he wanted to split off the SS trust fund and make the Federal Government solvent without counting on those surpluses.  But he lost, so there was and is no lockbox.  If the SS surplus isn't spent in some future budget, the Fed can pay itself back with it, and having paid all the interest to itself, it cannot be considered actual debt.

Did you not care enough to explain the discrepency between Clinton's three balanced budgets and the apparent debt increase you found?  Standard Republican MO I guess.

………… parent

I didn't bother to dig any deeper than the top line numbers...

because the internal breakdowns do not matter.  In the end debt is debt no matter how you try to hide it.  For example, the Social Security accounts are still obligations on the Federal government.  They still have to pay those benefits.  They are not a profit center.

Whether the government owes money to someone because they directly own a security or because the government has to otherwise pay out benefits is a distinction without a difference .

If those accounts do not represent debt that the government is obligated to pay, then why is it included in a column titled Gross Federal Debt at all?

To review a few points from the document, the title of the section in which my data appears:

Section 7 - Federal Debt

The title of the table from which my data are taken:

Table 7.1—FEDERAL DEBT AT THE END OF YEAR: 1940–2010

The title of the column in the table from which my data are taken:

Gross Federal Debt

Please explain to me how the securities held in the Social Security accounts are NOT actual obligations that the government will ultimately have to pay?  Do those accounts somehow not expect to be paid the interest promised to them on the US Government securities that they hold?  I suspect that the accountants might beg to differ with you on that.  Maybe I am missing something, but I don't think so.

President Poupon

As you all know, President Obama is a real man of the people. Tuesday, he dropped by a popular Virginia restaurant to grab a burger with his pal Joe. The Gateway Pundit blog pointed out that plain old ketchup didn't cut it for the president, who ordered his burger with a very special condiment:

Yes.  The President likes spicy mustard -- even Dijon mustard.  And he eats overcooked beef.

This is the state of objective journalism in America?

"May I change the subject," said a prominent Washington theologian at a recent dinner. The conversation had been high-minded -- religion, philosophy, the nature of evil. "I'd like to talk about Michelle Obama's arms," he said.

He is a big fan of those arms. We then began a discussion about the significance of the first lady's arms. Actually, it turned out to be equally serious. Michelle Obama's arms, we determined, were transformational. Her arms are representative of a new kind of woman: young, strong, vigorous, intelligent, accomplished, sexual, powerful, embracing and, most of all, loving.

Today is Mother's Day. Today we should celebrate Michelle Obama's arms as the arms of a mother.

Motherhood's Paucity of Language

The paucity of language is shown by the use of a single word, "mother", to cover numerous relationships created by the passage of  years. Is it possible that the person (barely recovered from childbirth) is myself, the  new parent of a tiny helpless infant son? The schoolboy and the camper with no time for more than a nod in my direction; the young man who left home, so casually, never to return; the father who generously, made me the grandmother of three- are they one person? Am I?

With thankfulness I am still linked today, to an able, handsome, middle aged giant, but those former selves have disappeared forever.  Only the title remains unchanged. --Mother

Obama is becoming a lot like your loser brother in law

...here we go again. ;-(

The Obama administration will propose $60 billion in new tax increases over 10 years on wealthy estates, businesses and others to make up for shortfalls in its fund to pay for an expensive overhaul of the health-care system.

The measures go beyond plans the White House has announced in the past few weeks. Officials said that upon further analysis they realized that they had overestimated savings and tax increases proposed in February to help pay the bill.

Some of the changes will be announced Saturday, with the full proposals coming Monday when the White House releases a detailed analysis of its budget blueprint.

Administration officials described the new proposals not as tax increases, but as eliminating "tax loopholes."

Iranian/American Journalist To Be Released

"Merck Created Phony Peer-Review Medical Journal "

Merck created a phony, but real sounding, peer-review journal titled the 'Australasian Journal of Bone and Joint Medicine' to publish data favorable to its products.

What's wrong with this is so obvious it doesn't have to be argued for. What's sad is that I'm sure many a primary care physician was given literature from Merck that said, "As published in Australasian Journal of Bone and Joint Medicine, Fosamax outperforms all other medications...." Said doctor, or even the average researcher wouldn't know that the journal is bogus. In fact, knowing that the journal is published by Elsevier gives it credibility!

This Pakistan thing is ..a ...big ....problem!

As Taliban militants push deeper into Pakistan’s settled areas, foreign operatives of Al Qaeda who had focused on plotting attacks against the West are seizing on the turmoil to sow chaos in Pakistan and strengthen the hand of the militant Islamist groups there, according to American and Pakistani intelligence officials.

They smell blood, and they are intoxicated by the idea of a jihadist takeover in Pakistan,” said Bruce O. Riedel, a former analyst for the C.I.A. who recently led the Obama administration’s policy review of Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Oh great, this makes me feel better

Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari said his country isn’t adding to its nuclear arsenal and doesn’t have to disclose the location of its weapons to the U.S.

Pakistan is “not adding to our stockpile as such,” Zardari said today on NBC’s “Meet the Press” program. “Why do we need more?”

Asked whether Pakistan would tell U.S. intelligence officials where all its nuclear weapons are located, to allow for a joint strategy to keep them secure, Zardari said Pakistan is a sovereign country.

Ok fine.

“Why don’t you do the same with other countries yourself?” Zardari said in the interview taped May 7. “I think this is a sovereignty issue, and we have a right to our own sovereignty.”

Is this guy a Taliban? Their country is being over run by terrorists! Wouldn't a normal reaction be to insure the safety of the existing stockpile, no one asked whether they wanted to place an order, lol?
