Ob-ush-ama - Bad policies from the last 8 years continue...

As a senator, Barack Obama denounced the Bush administration for holding "secret energy meetings" with oil executives at the White House. But last week public-interest groups were dismayed when his own administration rejected a Freedom of Information Act request for Secret Service logs showing the identities of coal executives who had visited the White House to discuss Obama's "clean coal" policies. One reason: the disclosure of such records might impinge on privileged "presidential communications." The refusal, approved by White House counsel Greg Craig's office, is the latest in a series of cases in which Obama officials have opted against public disclosure. Since Obama pledged on his first day in office to usher in a "new era" of openness, "nothing has changed," says David -Sobel, a lawyer who litigates FOIA cases. "For a president who said he was going to bring unprecedented transparency to government, you would certainly expect more than the recycling of old Bush secrecy policies."

There's good and bad.

Obama is a centrist.  Just because teh right calls him 'the most liberal politician ever/socialist/communist/etc' doesn't mean that's true.  His good....Just look at what McCain has said and done over the last couple months and compare.  McCain is a barking at the moon nitwit.  He'd have had us attack Iran so that a different very conservative politician run the show over there.  Until the Republican party throws off the yoke of the nuts who set policies and run the party, I'll take the centrist Dem any time.

Things I'm unhappy with about Obama:

!) Continuing bush43's DOJ policy on: a) Degence of Marriage Act.  That last court filing where they equated homosexuality with pedophilia is abhorrent, b) the use of National Security to quash investigations and law suits. Prior to bush43, a govt could only censor individual data points, not quash a whole law suit/investigation.

2) they should have let the FDIC take over the bad banks/insurance companies.  Coddling those who caused our current financial mess, Geitner's way, hasn't enlightened those bums one bit.  It's in fact made them even more princely acting like they deserve our largess.  They don't.  Those very same protected upper class should be at home collecting unemployment checks right now.

3) Environmental timidity.  They should allow coal companies to blow up mountains to get at coal.  They shouldn't allow them to dump the remains into valleys & streams, filling them in and effectively killing everything.  Profit and greed should not trump the planet we live on.  We don't have another.

Having said all that....I'm still very thankful to have Obama as President.  His stance on many world issues has been almost perfect.  The US can once again be considered other countries partner, not other countries bully master.  Thank god Karl Rove no longer has any power other than to blather and bullshit at Phaux.

To each their own, kindness, but,

as I pointed out on another post here, I didn't like eiher Obama or McCain.  To be truthful, I'd been sort of leaning towards Obama while he was still campaigning, until he voted for the FISA bill, which would expand the powers of the powers that be to engage in illegal wire-tapping, etc., on ordinary American citizens, and for continued funding of our war on Iraq while he was  still a Senator.

Secondly, during the foreign policy debates between McCain and Obama, when they BOTH started talking enthusiatically about going in and killing Al Aqeda, and going in and kicking some butt,  I was turned off.    All that together should've sounded an alarm, imho.

Thirdly, during what I saw during the debates, one came off as a pathetic, nasty old dolt (McCain), and the other came off as sort of a Prima Don--strutting around the stage (Obama))

Fourth:  The other things that you've mentioned about, including the refusal to release  the torture photos and in general, the continuation of many of Bush's policies are also a turn-off for me.

So, with all that in  mind, I decided to WRITE in my own POTUS ticket at the Election polls last fall, which I don't regret one bit.

I think that a true democracy is now possible.

With the current era of internet & cell phone connections, we the people could run an actual democracy.  It would be balky & slow but it could function.

Too Much Freedom

A perfect example of how economies and nations can not thrive without laws and regulations.

Too much freedom and not enough regulation is stifling Iraq's economy. ( Grover Norquists wet dream?)

Legislation languishes in the Iraqi Parliment, as listless leaders do nothing. The perception is that backdoor deals and corruption are allowing the Shiites and Iran to have too much influence, while the people go without clean water, and other basic needs.

Another critical bill would impose disclosure rules on political parties, which are currently allowed to accept donations of any size without reporting the source, leading to accusations that some of Iraq’s leading Shiite political organizations are financed by Iran.

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/06/22/world/middleeast/22iraq.html?hp

Will the Iraqi's lose their "freedoms" under collectivist rules of revenue sharing amongst it's people as promoted by the basic rule of laws and profit sharing legislation?

Looking for solutions that provided revenue sharing between the central government and the provinces! Is this the beginning of the evils of central control and collektivism, or is it the practical and necessary means for having a stable government. The Sunni's are promoting moving on regulations and laws. The Shiite's are seen as lazy and corrupt.

There is legislation that would grant additional powers to the country’s president; provide for revenue sharing between the central government and the provinces; and possibly engineer a political solution for the disputed province of Kirkuk. Also languishing are statutes regarding foreign investment, the environment, elections, price fixing, political corruption, consumer protection, intellectual property rights, building codes and even the design of a new national flag.

A Resounding Yes!

I was there, and have friends who lost there lives there, all for no reason.

That being said, part of just running the government IS defending our Nation from would be no good doers. I would prefer we secure our borders and focus on domestic security, but liberals find that racist and intrusive, you can't have it both ways.

Meh

I don't mind propping up people that have rotten luck.  That's the entire point of a welfare state*.

The problem is that we can't discern who had bad luck and who is just a lazy, rotten scoundrel out to live off the dole.

*I support the basic precepts of welfare state so long as it is at the state level.
