Idealism vs. Realism
"Who dares think one thing, and another tell,
My heart detests him as the gates of hell."
(Homer, Iliad, IX., tr. Pope)
"La parole nous a été donnée pour déguiser notre pensée."
(Charles Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord)
So are you an idealist, or a realist?

Does this site...
...still live?
I think
it's been a zombie for a long time. It's too bad!

I agree. It's too bad.
I think there's a crying need for a website where left & right can exchange views frankly without descending into pointless vitriol.
you are not on
the Forvm? And yes I agree.

well, I was...
...but they banished me.
heh I see
Yes, there probably should be a good alternate site that encourages thoughtful debate and discussion. It's a matter of getting all the factors that promote it built in, which is difficult. Programming-wise and advertising-wise :)

Tac did it all so well...
...on his original site. He's a uniquely talented guy. Unfortunately, none of his spin-off sites seem to have fared so well: at some of them, I don't think he'd be much more welcome than I am!
Anyway, if nobody objects, I guess I'll stick around, and see if anybody wants to talk to me.
you are definitely welcome
To stick around :) I hope more people do come to discuss and hang out.

It depends
Idealism v realism in what context?
Idealism is a worthy trait when considering the future and pondering the possible. Without it, one fails to think "outside the box"
But idealism cannot implement. It envisions but cannot "see".
Realism --dirty, messy, detailed, and pragmatic realism, has to be invoked to actually create something.
In other words, an Idealist may be able to envision a health care future, but only a Realist can actually create that future.
Beautiful and wise
Just like you! ;)
Oh c'mon, guys...
...be responsive!
In case it's helpful, the Talleyrand quote translates more or less as follows:
"Speech was given to us to conceal our thoughts."
