So... Paris prosecutors say Galliano to stand trial
Okay, so he's a dick and said some ignorant things...
But stand trail
...?
Are we at a point in the world where even in western countries a person can not make an ass of themselves without having an orwellian bureaucratic machine weighing in and imprisoning them for it?!?!

Well, yeah.
does this come as news?
Well, Yeah, it does...
That is just straight up BS!
People should be able to say what they want, let it be settled in the court of public opinion.
In the US the SCOTUS just upheld the right of those lunatic religious freaks who yell at the grieving parents of our fallen troops and call them fags and all sorts of retarded (yes I said retarded) nonsense, but a fashion designer is crucified by the french government for expressing his percieved repugnant ideological beliefs?
When kids can wear shirts with mass murdering scum like Che on their t-shirts, but are scorned for wearing a shirt with a confederate flag, in South Carolina, I say we have lost our way!

SCOTUS Ruling
While I agree that the SCOTUS ruled correctly in the Westboro Baptist Church issue, what I didn't see reported by our media was whether or not the burial grounds can legally exclude such demonstrations from their property.
If the burial is at a national cemetary, the government's hands are apparently tied, but if at a private cemetary, it seems to me that the owner could easily prohibit such noxious demonstrators from their property.
One would assume that an actual journalist might delve into that. But it's more entertaining to let the public assume that these idiots have been given free rein to go disturb any funeral they like.
Europe has had laws against that for some time
Many countries in Europe have made various forms of speech illegal. Insulting a stranger on the street is punishable by a fine or jail time in France. Referring disparagingly to someone's religion or ethnicity is illegal.
None of this is new. Anyone who holds Europe up as a model for the US to follow apparently is OK with laws such as this.
