Timetables and the Petulant Playground President
Promoted by Brendan -- Mike comes back swinging. This ought to stir up some heated discussion!
Hey guys. I've been on vacation for a bit and taking care of some personal business. I will be back on a more regular basis soon. I wanted to share my thoughts on Bush and the timeline discussion with you.
Sigh. Once again the Petulant Playground President uses a tactic most of us abandoned long before we left elementary school: when caught redhanded, deny the obvious and blame the accuser. I can't think of a single elementary school teacher I had who would let him get away with this nonsense, especially if the other teachers were watching. Yet we have a whole cadre of bootlickers , liars
and idiots
who publicly pretend the emperor is not only fully clothed but also fully rational and principled.
Here's the headline: Bush: Democrats Should Drop Partisan Politics
Let's start with the firing of the US attorneys. Contrary to what the Petulant Playground President would have us believe, at least some of them were obviously fired for political reasons. And in this case the Bush White House is so obviously involved and was so obviously partisan when it should not have been that even the master prevaricators currently running 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue are afraid to testify under oath, or even with a transcript, about their activities. You can read all about it at TalkingPointsMemo.com . If they had been caught lying and cheating like this in my elementary school the principal would have given them a good spanking and held a scary come-to-Jesus conference with their parents. And he would have instructed all the staff to watch the whole gang like a hawk. In my elementary school that would have been the last time they tried to blame others for their own obvious wrongdoing.
But it doesn't end there. Contrary to the will of the American people (link ) and contrary to the advice of a commission (link
) many of us (wrongly!) thought that even a president as petulant as this one would not ignore, Mr. Bush refuses to accept any limitations whatsoever on the Iraq War. He seems to think that a win in Iraq would rescue both his political party and his presidential reputation. But whatever his motives might be, his statements about timetables are obviously politically motivated. How do I know this? Because when it was a Democratic President with a war on his hands in 1999, candidate Bush thought timetables were important (link
):
"I think it’s also important for the president to lay out a timetable as to how long they will be involved and when they will be withdrawn."
Before I move on, I just want to point out that we did actually get hearts and flowers in Kosovo (link , and doesn't Clark sound presidential here?), we didn't lose a single American soldier (link
, again Clark looks good here), and we were in much better shape in that war than we are in Mr. Bush's War. (link
) Clark is being presidential now and trying to stop a war with Iran. You can read about it here
.
Now that he has a war on his hands, Mr. Bush thinks otherwise (link )(And Mr. Bush wasn't the only Republican saying different things then than he says now. Here
is a PDF with who said what.):
The legislation, Bush said, would undercut the U.S. commander and troops in Iraq just as his new strategy is starting to work. The bills would dictate "arbitrary time lines" and embolden the enemy.
OK, it's time to have the above-mentioned "come-to-Jesus" meeting. First, Mr. President, I'm not sure the strategy is working all that well. The news from Iraq doesn't look good. Second, some of our erstwhile allies in the Arab world are not happy (link
) and third, as suggested here
, whatever minor successes the surge achieves, we are doomed to eventual failure because Iraqis don't want US troops there either. Fourth, Mr. President, we have caught you lying about the details of the escalation aka surge
in the past, even lying to our troops about it
. So why should we believe anything you say about it now?
Finally, Mr. President, it's time to stop talking about who serves at your pleasure and about how you alone are "the Decider" and it's time to start realizing that you serve at the pleasure of the American people. This is not third grade and it's not a game of dodgeball. You're not on the playground anymore. Recess is over and the time for accountability is here.

Wow.
When you come back, you really come back. That was a smack and a half.

LOL.
Fortunately, I've gotten a little rest while off and feel more like a good fight. ;)
Republican spirts
are running low. Don't know how much spirit they have left.
I welcome all Republicans to do a full Hagel, with a Gordon Smith half twist. It will be a relief. Come out of the closet and admit that if this was Clinton's war you would never have voted for it.
Wake up!!! We can not win militarily. It's over. Stop putting our troops at risk!
My headline:
Republicans Nix Funding for Troops
I will be sorely disappointed if this bill doesn't pass. Why would the President play russian roulette with lives of men and women in the field...... ! Maybe he really doesn't care about them and cares more about saving his own face, a matter of ego and purely stubborn pride.
This has to be hard on his poppa. Even the Saudi's, Bush 41's, old pals, won't join his son for dinner.
I'm only half stupid
Bush isn't up for re-election
but others are. Look for what support he has to evaporate as 2008 election reality seeps into the collective Republican consciousness.
Conservatives shut down Sampson hearing.
Speaking of petulant Republicans. They are having hissy fits right and left.
+++++++++++
The were for the hearings before they were against them.
http://thinkprogress.org/
And more hissy fits as the house dems just passed a budget with moral and fiscal integrity.
No place to run. No place to hide.
It feels like the first crack in the ice that is going to start an avalance of mass porportions.
I'm only half stupid
I think 2008
has the potential to be as good for Democrats as 2006 was. Now Republicans are unable to keep things quiet and some ugly truth is biting them where they sit.
I've noticed that folks I used to spar with
over at RedState, I now find saying things that are more like something I would say over at the Forvm.
There are "conservatives" and then there are the neo-cons. The neo-cons aren't conservative at all. See my link to Glenn Greenwald's discussion of David Broder's NY Times article in today's open thread.
What I find most curious was that conservatives as a whole were more than happy to defend the bush43 Administration, call those who disagreed unpatriotic or treasonous while they KNEW the republican majorities were covering up the game the Administration was playing (ie - lying through their teeth). As soon as a democratic majority started actually brining their actions to the light of day....well, there's been a sea change in attitudes it looks like. Except for some holdovers who I won't name.
Meanwhile Powerline Pushes for Bombing Iran
http://powerlineblog.com/archives/017191.php
speaking of neocons, I swear all they care about is bombing Iran.
Me, I am a little burnt out on war. So is Speaker Pelosi and Robert Gates, and the Saudi's and the UAE, and more than half the American people.
Forbes supports Rudy. Run Rudy run. You will be an asset on the road to a democratic presidency.
I'm only half stupid
I thought about putting
in a link to something from powerline in one of the bootlickers, liars and idiots categories. I'll let everyone guess as to which category I was going to put them under. ;)
Yeh
moderate liberals and moderate conservatives seem to be moving closer these days while the fringes drift further apart.
Charles Bird is posting at the Forvm these days (as Bird Dog) -- I know you already go there but for everyone else you might enjoy reading his stuff if you're looking for conservative viewpoints.
Come, my friends. 'Tis not too late to seek a newer world -- Tennyson
Very true, Brendan.
It can be more accurately said, however, that both the Right and the Left are being pushed to the fringes. Perhaps there's hope for a so-called third party/center/independent party's formation yet.
Bush's
"dems are playing politics" line is classic Rove strategy--beat the democrats to the punch by calling them whatever they will accuse the administration of.
How many times have we seen this in the past? Kerry is a traitor for his war service, though Bush is a hero for dodging. Those who question our false intelligence are traitors and partisan, but we can lie to the public to get the war started and not feel any remorse. Sending the troops into battle for lies and without proper resources for their third tour of duty is supporting the troops while an increasing amount (20%) suffer from PTSD, but trying to bring them back to safety from the middle of another country's civil war is not.
The Roves of the Bush administration are expert spinners. Up is down, down is up. Don't believe your eyes.
Oh yeah, if you get caught in the lies: bring up gays, joke about it, say you forgot, or release a news report that is 6months old (that is probably false anyway because it was gained through illegal torture).

Yes that's the usual routine.
I haven't noticed if they brought up gays yet this time, but I expect them to any second now.
uhhhh
Kosovo was not an invasion but an entirely Air War. No wonder we didn't lose anyone. We terrorized a souvereign nation that has never fought us nor engaged in a war of conquest (like Iraq obviously had). Sorry, but getting "hearts and flowers" from people on whose behalf we stole a part of a souvereign nation does not count as something good by my count.

The 1.5 million
ethnic Albanians we rescued from Milosevic tell a different story. I wonder why....? ;)
I just told you why
because we stole Serbian land for them. Who wouldn't be grateful for such a present and who would admit that they were just trying to steal what wasn't theirs.
"To discuss evil in a manner implying neutrality, is to sanction it." AR
You do realize
that your opinion is in the extreme minority on this? I don't understand why you hold such a strong opinion on this that is so out of focus with even other Republicans, not to mention the international community (though I do realize you couldn't care less about the latter). Why is it that you feel so strongly about this? Does it have something to do with your Russian background?
I think plenty of other republicans
saw the folly of the entire campaign and voted against it. I realize it is not politically correct to say this but the fact remains that Kosovo is Serbia's land. Just because ethnic Albanians settled it, does not automatically grant them the right to it, nor the right to start a civil war over it.
If you look at the facts objectively, you would see that they had no claim on it. Also during the two years of a civil war (that Albanians started to separate Serbian land from Serbia) only about 2,000 people were killed on the Albanian side and also plenty of Serbs - so the claims of Genocide that were used by Clinton and the "international community" were manufactured.
Also KLA (Kosovo Liberation Army) received assistance from Islamic extremists and we helped them as well. Let's just say I am not proud of Clinton's action there.

you are more than welcome to be politically incorrect.
you have been for a long time.... ;+)
I'm only half stupid
hehe thank you
for the permission :)
"To discuss evil in a manner implying neutrality, is to sanction it." AR
hmmmm........
How far back do we need to go?
link
And during the Kosovo conflict the PNAC crowd that got us into Iraq saw ousting Milosevic as the best solution to get us out of Kosovo. (link
) So who are the Republicans who have your particular slant on this one?
Also, could you please explain
how this position is consistent with your Palestinian position? Those who had the land first should get it no matter what? What about Palestine?
there's also the issue
that Ender continues to ignore, which is that the West lost all faith in Serbia's ability to negotiate a multiethnic state peacefully after Serbian rebels in Bosnia committed the genocide at Srebrenica.
Also, nice sleight-of-hand, Ender:
Well, Serbia has been sovereign since, when, the 1990s? And we're attacking Iraq because of Kuwait, now? Wha?
Saint, n. A dead sinner revised and edited. - Ambrose Bierce
What about the rest
of the post? Is this the only part you are taking issue with?
I'll reply to the rest of it
later today :)
"To discuss evil in a manner implying neutrality, is to sanction it." AR
We terrorized a souvereign
Bull.
And it had been 13 years since Iraq had met any of your conditions at the time of our attack (conditions which are somewhat arbitrary, anyway... military action to prevent genocide might be justified in the absence of a war of conquest by any of the parties involved). Are you actually suggesting that Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in 1990 was justification for attack in 2003?
There's just zero consistency in your positions on these wars, except that if a Republican ordered it, you approve, and if a Democrat ordered it, you disapprove.
