A Frivolous SL Diary

[Note: I make no claims as to the pertinence or value of this diary. But since I am knee-deep in this at the moment and there appears to be a need for some light-hearted fun around here, I am bowing to public pressure and posting something frivolous and a little bit personal. This is not fp worthy, so don't promote it ;} And, just for the record, my spouse is also in SL and is enjoying the experience as much or more than I am.]

Second Life (SL) can be thought of as the next step in online communications or social networking. Communication technology constantly evolves, from the telephone, which undoubtedly seemed strange at the time, to this chatting via cartoon avatars. How people react to this new form of communication is very interesting, and it is one of the things I like most to explore in SL. Asking people "why are you here" gets me a whole mess of quite interesting responses.

The first thing that struck me was the gender/sexual role issue. Sex is a big deal in SL. One cannot help but notice this fact. That is not necessarily an original observation, because, quite honestly, sex is a big deal in real life also. But how people choose to approach and experience gender and sexuality runs the full gamut in SL and could fill pages. So I'll try to limit my scope.

On this blog, without an avatar, I did not have to assume a gender identity, and this passed unnoticed. But on SL, I am finding that the mere act of choosing a female avatar is reinforcing my underlying gender role and persona. Now, throw into the mix that a good portion of men choose female avatars in SL, and some choose amorphous asexual avatars, what does that say about the nature of this form of online interaction? Do pictures make a difference? Is it the, um, more basic nature of much of the SL world, or the inner workings of the specific individual, or something else, that provides that reinforcement?

I will probably be roasted for this one

But I'll blame Brendan for giving me the idea, and SL for making me not care.

…………

I know some of those people.

They don't hesitate to tell me what crazy things they do there that they would never do in real life.

I think the ones I know use it as a freeing muse. To be able to be what you can't in the real world. Also, the anomonymity (I can't spell, sorry) allows them to act out things they would never do either.

So, no....you and they are completely normal and actually you are experiencing things in a wider breadth than you would if you had no computer. You (possibly) and they (definitely) are less constricted and more free than many were taught to be by our mothers in the real world.

I'd be jealous as I'd love to be some tart in SL, but I honestly don't have the time.

Re: spelling

I botched anonymity about four times before I got it right -- luckily firefox has a built-in spell checker!

Identity

Is all the interaction in SL via typing? I used to play a first-person-shooter and people would sometimes use microphones to talk -- when you're trying to coordinate flanks under fire, typing just doesn't cut it. Anyway, point being that it was pretty clear from voices who was what, and how old, and so on.

Maybe the voice communication makes more sense for fast-paced games. Still, half of what we talked about was completely unrelated to the game. In a social setting like SL, I'd figure actual talking would be fun -- but that would undermine the anonymity of avatars and take away from the role-playing aspect.

Did you see the pictures of gamers by their avatars that ran recently? Very interesting. Lemme find the link... Edit: here it is .

For now, it's typing

Which is why your earlier comment was so amazingly apt. Pictures only go so far ;}

It's all about the typing, IMHO.

I have met some role players, and they get pretty heavy, but I have not yet drummed up the courage to actually visit one of those spot yet.

thanks for the link

I enjoyed it :) If I included the images of all the avatars I've had, or even currently have it would be a bit funny too.

When I play role playing games, I prefer female characters. With some exceptions like Star Wars Galaxies where I was a cool businessman. Second Life is too close to reality so I wanted to create someone similar to myself, which meant females were out :)

I am not a big fan of voice interaction in such games unless I am actually playing with friends.

Funny

It looks kinda like him, in some strange way.

It's a whole gallery

Some look alike, some very different.

I think they posed the people to try to look like the avatars.

There's a story behind that snapshot

I'm standing in front of the YearlyKos headquarters. Evidently, they are planning to have some YearlyKos functions in SL as well as in Chicago.

I am surrounded by poofer particles of a patriotic variety.

Poofers are obnoxious things you can wear, that send out all manner of little photos. This one happens to be patriotic, shooting out nice little bits of Americana.

…………

ooooh

I want one of those poofers so I can wear it as I go into the French quarters! Gotta get me one :)

The photo doesn't do it justice

It is a positive cloud of Americana. Engulfs you. You will get kicked out of clubs for setting off one of these, because they eat server time like crazy.

I am member of the SL Republican Party and some chatter came over the IM the other night about an obnoxious European who was spouting off long anti-American tirades in a crowded public place. So later I contacted the person who witnessed this (a bona fide member of the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy, says so on his group list, hehe) and we determined that this poofer would be the best weapon to have in reserve should something like this occur again.

I also happen to have a similar poofer, called a Can of Texas Whup Ass. Not only does it poof (fists), you can tell it to poof someone specifically, not just emanate from yourself. You can engulf them in fists.

The things people come up with.

Your character looks like you.

While you did pick a female avatar, I'm somewhat surprised.

I guess most the people I know in SL go with what they DON'T have out in this world.

…………

Because

I cannot role play well. I did not role play here; I just didn't divulge, and no one asked.

I had to choose, and I could not imagine being a man or something vague. And the reactions to my SL persona have been interesting. Including my own.

I know several men who have both avatars and switch regularly. But they seem to be the same person, no matter which skin they happen to be wearing; I don't get any sense of roleplaying from them, but perhaps I don't get to see that part of their SL experience. I don't know that I yet know any women who have male avatars. The few non-human avatars I've met so far all seem to be male or openly bisexual/transgendered, according to the information they make public.

I wasn't trying to pass a judgement.

Just an observation, that's all. And your purposes for using SL seem less fantasy orientated to me that those I know who go there.

Maybe I should be concerned that I know so many misfits.

………… parent

Me neither

I was merely explaining my POV, not trying to judge anybody else. I don't think a person can experience SL with a closed mind; it requires a certain level of toleration for humanity's foibles and failings. Maybe that's why it seems to draw a slightly older crowd. Each person decides for himself how to live his "second" life. Some folks are very fanciful with their imagery, which is not a bad thing ;}

If watching people play (and waste money to do so) is bothersome, it is not a place one would enjoy. Because it can get silly. Very silly. But sometimes we can all use a good laugh. So your friends aren't misfits. They just remember how to play, that's all.
