Weekend Open Thread
Here's a thread to talk about whatever you want. What is everyone doing for the fourth of July holiday? I think we will have a quiet celebration here. I've been teaching summer school every day and will enjoy the short break.

Taliban threat seen growing in Pakistan
Islamic militancy could engulf country, security report warns (Jane Perlez, Ismail Khan, New York Times)
.
"The Pakistani president, Gen. Pervez Musharraf, was warned this month that Islamic militants and Taliban fighters are rapidly spreading beyond the country's lawless tribal lands and that without "swift and decisive action," the growing militancy could engulf the rest of the country.
The warning came in a document from the Interior Ministry, which said Pakistan's security forces in North-West Frontier Province abutting the tribal regions are outgunned and outnumbered and have forfeited authority to the Taliban and their allies.
But now, the Interior Ministry is telling Musharraf that the influence of the extremists is swiftly bleeding east and deeper into his own country, threatening places like Peshawar and Kohat, which were considered to be safeguarded by government forces.
"It's a policy of appeasement," said Brig. Mahmood Shah, who was the senior government official in charge of security in the tribal lands until last year. "It hasn't worked. The Talibanization has increased in the past year."
The U.S. Embassy had no official comment on the document. "
15K
My fiance is running her first 15K (and a half marathon in August)
Cool. Racing is fun.
Back in the 1996/97 timeframe when I was single I ran a couple of marathons. Today I am so overweight you wouldn't believe it to see me now.
My wife ran a couple as well, and then she did one run called Dances with Dirt in Hell Michigan which was a 50 miler. There are a suprising number of people who actually do ultras.
But the half marathons and the 15Ks are a lot of fun. That is a good distance for keeping in shape without having your whole life be about running.
Wish her luck for me!

-4 Strongly Disagree - 0 Meh - Strongly Agree +4Supreme Court flips, will hear detainee claims
The U.S. Supreme Court reversed course Friday and agreed to hear claims of Guantanamo detainees that they have a right to challenge their detentions in American federal courts.
and:
"The decision, announced in a brief order released Friday, sets the stage for a legal fight that appears likely to shape debates in the Bush administration about how to close a detention center that has become a lightning rod for international criticism. More than 370 men are being held at the naval station on a scrubby corner of Cuba.
The unusual order, which required votes from five of the nine justices, rescinded an April order in which the justices declined to review a federal appeals court decision that ruled against the detainees.
The court offered no explanation for the change. But the order meant that the justices will hear the full appeal in their next term, perhaps by December. The court rarely grants such motions for reconsideration. Some experts on Supreme Court procedure said they knew of no similar reversal by the court in decades.
After two earlier Supreme Court decisions since 2004 that have been setbacks for the administration's Guantanamo detention policies, the order Friday signaled that the justices had determined to resolve another politically and legally freighted detention issue.
"Finally, after nearly six years, the Supreme Court is going to rule on the ultimate question: Does the Constitution protect the people detained at Guantanamo Bay?" said Neal Katyal, a Georgetown University law professor who argued the last Supreme Court case dealing with the Guantanamo detainees. "

Traffic report
SC shows consistent growth over the past six months in terms of page views (note Feb was 28 days), particularly nice since the other big lefty (dKos) and righty (RS) sites dropped off in June. Of course, we're still a teensy bit behind those sites in terms of actual numbers, so feel free to invite your friends to come post =)

I like the
smallness that allows you to get to know folks and think that what you think and say is actually being read/heard.
I'm only half stupid
I do too
I wouldn't actually want to get too big. But we can grow a little =)

I would like
to find a super doper ultra smart progressive, that knows how to do the kinder and gentler smack down.
How do you argue with someone that says liberals are racists because they notice black people are at a disadvantage in this culture. As if even mentioning is a sin. So exasperating.

You should be able to grow to the point where
sidebar advertising pays for the site. It would be nice if you could actually be paid for your efforts.
Well, it doesn't cost much to run the site
and if Ender wants $$ for hosting (especially if we switch) we'll kick in, but personally I don't like advertising. I'd rather keep the site clean.
I dunno, it hasn't come up -- we can always vote on it later. Thanks for thinking of it =)

Oh yeah!
Cool graphs! Impressive.
The only person I like to read consistently at dKOS is Marcos, and he's on vacation. I like his take on things. (Interesting he was considering writing a book on the new Libertarian Democrat).
RedState...... used to be more interesting, but I just can't go there anymore without feeling like I have poured acid in my eyes.
Oddly I like to read Powerline blog.... they have a very strong pov but they at least seem to represent it some kind of standards for integrity and consistency.
I used to read RCP a lot, but lord, what is this fetish with the Presidential celebrity, as if Princess Di herself has come back to life and is running for office.
My favorite liberal site is FDL. I really like Christy's strong knowledge of the law. She understands that without the law and justice to balance both sides you got nothin'. (See current DOJ.) I also very much enjoy the creative and humorous writing of the many posters..

The Dangers of........
Whatever happened to serial killers? Why have they seemed to disappear?
Why does the press play over and over and over ad naseum these 'terror plots' scenarios. I know we should be aware and prepared for reality but I hate this overkill.
People die in cars everyday. Am I afraid of my car? No. I just drive it with respect and caution. I don't hear folks hyping fear of driving in your car.
Can't we do the same with these criminal wannabes terror plotters, instead of hyping fear? I find it obnoxious and counterproductive. Why make rage boy famous. It's like rewarding bad children for having violent temper tantrums.

Could it be that American media is trying terrorize with terrorism? Crimes happen every day. This was another one according to the brits. Good for them.

Why don't you post it here.

And what is it with these imecile terrorists in England?
We've all seen the news reports
. The police found two cars off Picadilly Square and that Jeep the crashed into a garage at the airport or something.
Now don't get me wrong. An inept would be terrorist is preferrable to one who can actually carry out their plan. But to think that terrorism has graduated to The Gang That Couldn't Shoot Straight leaves me wondering, What's goin' on?
Now a conspiracy minded person might think all these bumbling jobs are plants to try and push an agenda, but such is the life of conspiracy believin' folk.
What do I think? I'm not sure. Probably somewhere between being grateful for idiots (for a change) and the conspiracy theorists.
Simple
As Stewart Brand might say, it's all about "access to tools." Seems they didn't have the proper explosives, and didn't want to make the martyrdom commitment required to hand detonate the petrol and propane, which, in itself, is a poor substituted for the better fertilizer and petrol explosives.
My (slow) comment o' the day
(TMI edition)
Great week this week. I actually got out of the house twice in one week for the first time since last October. Of course, that meant I had to get out of bed, and out of my pajamas. I'm feeling brighter.
And on one of those trips, I was able to get some blood pressure medication, a month's worth, first ime since 2003. So maybe I won't be so volatile with missliberties for the next month.
Further, my daughter bought tickets for she and I to go see Midori play the Mendelssohn. I'm polishing my best cane (a walking stick that an ancestor brought from Ireland), but if luck holds, I really won't need it.
I haven't been to Eugene for a few years, and it is a longish trip, but this could be well worth it. Besides, I used to know a place there where one could get real Turkish coffee, thick enough to bite. I always ask for it without the sugar. I actually acquired a taste for this version of coffee from an Armenian friend, who invited me to his home a few times. Before the first time, he warned name about the coffee, said that men should not flinch, and the proper thing to say about it was, "In my house, coffee this weak is reserved for women and children." Which I did, and gained instant acceptance!
So, I'm busy assembling my travel kit, lining up some music for the trip--I've been working up Horace Silver's "Ecaroh," lately, and am going to get out the ancient Art Blakely and the Jazz Messengers recording from the fifties where it was first recorded. (Silver was with Blakely then.) One hasn't really heard this piece unless one has heard Blakely's drums on it.
I've got my dress jeans (the black ones) ready to go! I'm kind of excited.
Of course, this may not be so exciting to you'alls, but I haven't been out of town for a couple of years, at least. So I'm more than ready.
The daughter and I are going to get out our recording of the Mendelssohn, by another artist, to study up.
Wow, that should be a treat
Have a wonderful time!

One reason I don't like Liebermann
and there are many many other reasons....
Have a read
and see.
Joe thinks the averted bombing in London is a good spring board for his fetish with "security".
No, Joe, someone saw smoke coming from a car and called the authorities. These are little things that add up to bigger things. Then one day we wake up and say "What the hell happened?!?!"
No thanks, Joe.
Say, John
Without commenting on the merits of Lieberman, he wasn't talking about averting terror, from your quote, but about apprehending perps.
Do you realize how many crimes are solved in America by cameras?
Years ago the small city I lived in put two cameras on main st4reet after a series of burglaries. There was a great hew and outcry from many, including me. We saw this as some sort of invasion of privacy.
But I actually listened (something I didn't do much in those days) as a city lawyer explained that in the area the cameras were pointed, you had no reasonable expectaion of privacy anyway. It was a way to cut down on a bad thing (crime) without any loss of freedom for the avdrage non-criminal.
Now, I don't trust the government, but he assured everyone that if you were going to see a woman not your wife at the apartments across from the camera, that would not be of any interest to the camera monitors.
I am back just to link to another well recommended

you're right-- it won't do any good... but the 4th of July is this week, and it's just wrong to let America-hating diaries like that stand unchallenged.

Good for you
He deserved it. America ain't no nuisance. Every Democracy will inevitably elect bad leadership every so often, and this will cause problems. America is no exception. But our Constitution and our system and our ideals will survive this lot and we will be doing great things again before you know it. Bush is just a blink of an eye in the long course of history. And America is still a great country.
skymutt: accept no substitutes!
Yep
That's about the only answer to something like that diary.
