Weekend Open Thread

WaPo editorialist Fred Hiatt says Dems in Congress are merely pretending to be interested in solving the Iraq problem and are not compromising with Republicans like they're supposed to. (link ) What Fred really means is that Harry Reid is forcing Republicans to either stand with President Bush or with the overwhelming majority of the American people. Tough choice that for Republicans in Congress. This is an open thread.

If anyone says anything about Harry Potter

before I finish the book I will ban them.

Just a friendly heads-up.

WARNING: Harry Potter Spoiler

Just kidding, Brendan.

Sadly, I have not read any of the books, nor have I seen any of the movies. Perhaps one day, after I finish the other 100+ books on my reading list, I will get to them.

Watching the Moustache of Justice

That would be Henry Waxman, on CSpan.

(while I am cleaning house.... note the multi-tasking and the high productivity level. pats self on back)

Henry Waxman is holding hearings on FEMA response to the Formaldehyde (sp?) in Fema trailors and Fema's non-response.

If you want to see how the Bush govt works watch it.

Feds take decision making authoritity away from local officials, and send them on a paper chase to nowhere to avoid liability, accountability and responsibility. The trailers are poison to your health.

But the private contracters made money on the fill orders for the trailers.

I geuss even the guys that built the trailers are sick there was so much formaldahyde gas in the building materials.

Ender or Brendan

Can you erase these two diaries: here and here .

I accidentally erased the user account before the individual diaries, so they were relegated to 'anonymous' which I can't touch.

Thanks

I can't

but it looks like nobody can read them either, so it doesn't matter that much. Ender will have to clean it up, I guess.

it looks like we can't access them

from the frontend. Not a big deal, I could eventually go to the backend and remove them from the database. Was it anything interesting? :)

Great Live Music Tonight in Second Life

If you've got a Second Life account and you're bored tonight, there are some great live shows (Saturday is always a great night for live music there)

(All times are Linden Time... I.E. Pacific Time... all names are Second Life Avatar names):

6:00pm Grace McDunnough (Joni Mitchell-ish)

7:00pm A music festival at Bahamas (lasts three hours)... including

Etherian Kamaboko
Nance Brody (You've got to hear her ... EXCELLENT)
Push Chandler
Dallas Horsefly
Fireheart Braver

8:00pm Foxyflwr Cure

9:00pm Etherian Kamaboko (again)

When you get into SL.... just bring up "search" then "events" then "live music" and then select the show and click on "teleport".

Make sure you've got your good headphones on and your tip money.

I probably will be in to late to see Grace at 6:00pm (damn shame too, I like her)... but if you are looking for me, I'll be in my "female" avatar persona and I'll definitely be at the 7:00pm show.... I hope.

Anyway.... if you're bored tonight, stop by.

Lethbridge vs. Great Falls

It's a little eye-opening to travel in a day thru Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada, and Great Falls, MT-- two similar-sized cities in similar prairie settings directly north/south of each other on opposite sides of the border-- cities that SHOULD look similar, and yet Lethbridge looks new, prosperous, clean and well-groomed, while Great Falls looks kind of worn, old, dusty, and run down.  Granted, it's just the view from passing thru-- but it's almost like the difference between San Diego and Tijuana.

I dunno, maybe it's just all the energy resources up in Alberta that has led to prosperity... but isn't Montana the "Saudi Arabia of coal"?

It's not just Lethbridge-- western Canada's cities have the clea, prosperous look that I associate with the newly constructed suburbs that I remember from my California days.  Kamloops, a small city in central British Columbia with no apparent locational advantage in terms of scenery, nonetheless seemed to have the same... neatness.  I just don't see the same look in the small cities on our side of the border, for the most part.
