On Power

As the self declared winner, in my own self declared game, my dairy, on Greenspan's Pony, was the 1st (First) to the top of the Popular Dairies with a resounding lobbied for and hard won +6 points. Hooray for me!

As the clear winner some chose to ridicule my deductions on the influence of Greenspans words and how it affected mortage lenders. With my new found powers, I choose to delete the whole dairy, rather than let the insulting remarks stand.

Ahhhabwaha ..... I win again! I now see the usefulness of being the master of your own destiny with the power of censoring dissidents, who are so stuck in 'old think' that they have lost sight of holistic measurements that can begin a new vision for the future! It is the circle and the line that will save us. The line by itself is useful, but outdated.

What can you say when it turns out the only Democratic

What is clearly be shown to be bu***hit by bush43, ABC news, Elizabeth Edwards & now Obama, as far as trumpeting Iraq policy because General Petraeus said things that came out of dubya's speech writers, turns out to be Hillary of all people.

She may be the one worthy of my vote after all. I'm not saying yet, although you all know I'll support ANY of the Democratic contenders at this point over ANY of the Republican contenders from what everyone has said and positioned themselves. Yea, even Kusinich (that snowball in hell isn't going to last long).

Nuclear armed Iran?

John Abizaid, the retired Army general who headed Central Command for nearly four years, said he was confident that if Iran gained nuclear arms, the United States could deter it from using them.

"Iran is not a suicide nation," he said. He suggested that many in Iran — perhaps even some in the Tehran government — are open to cooperating with the West. The thrust of his remarks was a call for patience in dealing with Iran, which President Bush early in his first term labeled one of the "axis of evil" nations, along with North Korea and Iraq. He said there is a basis for hope that Iran, over time, will move away from its current anti-Western stance.

What?!? We don't need to start ANOTHER war with another Middle Eastern Nation? Which Commie outfit did this guy come from? Central Command? Sounds like a Stalinesque organization to me.

student tasered at Kerry event

Warning this dkos diary has over a 1000 comments and there are other smaller accounts of this - just youtube it or something.

Synopsis:

Basically Kerry was speaking at a FL university, students were asking questions and time dragged on, some disturbed guy ran up to the mike and started disrupting (interrupted the current questioner) saying that he wanted to ask a question. Kerry said that he would answer his question. He started off by saying that Kerry really won the election in 2004 so the question was why did he give up. Then before Kerry would answer he launched into asking about Kerry's membership in Skull and Bones.

At that point, with his mike cut (by hosts request) and police nearby, police started hauling him away. He was screaming and fighting them. Kerry was mumbling in the background pretending like he was going to answer the question, while they are dragging the guy away. Then they cuff him and wrestle him down in the back of the room, but he is screaming and moving around so the police pull out a taser. He starts screaming pleading for them not to taser his butt, but they taser him anyway at which point he starts wailing.

Interesting stuff. All the while Kerry just mumbles and mumbles.

What about Pakistan and nukes?

They already have em and bin Laden has been terrorizing the countryside.

Do you think that the General might know something you don't about Iran, like the reality that they are really not that close to nuclear weapons.

I am trying to figure out how to answer you

because I think you might've intended to reply to a different comment.

I doubt the General knows something we don't.

Instead he did nothing.

I don't think he saw the taser. Do you think you would be able to from the stage where lights glare in your eyes and the guy is being dragged off to the back.

No I don't think you have x-ray vision either.

………… parent

What could he have done?

It might have been entertaining to see him send the guy flying off the stage like he was stage diving, but that's a bouncers job, not a Senators job.

Mumbling till the guy hauled off and tasered maybe was a good choice.

btw - I'm not all that upset they tasered the guy. I mean, if any of us gets cuffed in a public setting, we stop resisting and go with whoever has the keys to the cuffs. You squirm and resist and you get shocked. It's not nice, but it is a modern day reality. I'd have preferred that the authorities took him out of the building so the tasering wasn't public though. Does that make me part of the problem? yea, maybe so.

………… parent

He was just dumb founded, Ender.

Completely dazed and lost in the moment as things unfolded like his mind was working in slow motion.  The cops probably had the guy hauled off before Kerry even realized someone was speaking to him, but when he did notice he simply froze and chose to hide behind the cops.

U.S. home foreclosures soar in August

LOS ANGELES - The number of foreclosure filings reported in the U.S. last month more than doubled versus August 2006 and jumped 36 percent from July, a trend that signals many homeowners are increasingly unable to make timely payments on their mortgages or sell their homes amid a national housing slump.

A total of 243,947 foreclosure filings were reported in August, up 115 percent from 113,300 in the same month a year ago, Irvine, Calif.-based RealtyTrac Inc. said Tuesday.

There were 179,599 foreclosure filings reported in July.

...

"The jump in foreclosure filings this month might be the beginning of the next wave of increased foreclosure activity, as a large number of subprime adjustable rate loans are beginning to reset now," RealtyTrac Chief Executive James J. Saccacio said.

Can anyone name a Cheney-Bush policy that has worked out well for the American public?

  • Iraq - $10-12 billion a month, 80-100 U.S. deaths a month, almost 20,000 injured, military stretched to the breaking point
  • Oil/gas prices - Highest ever recorded
  • Deficit - From a budget surplus to a current estimate of $9 trillion in debt
  • Home foreclosures - Remember Bush touting the record number of Americans who owned their own homes in State of the Union addresses? Yeah, how has that worked out?

So what Cheney-Bush policies have gone well for America (well, not including the executives and shareholders of Halliburton, oil giants and other crony firms)?

If you really believe this is the "fight of our lives," how come you're not in Iraq?

…………

Inflation is also a worry

Especially since the price of food is rising, as anyone that does their own food shopping can attest to. This is a cause for concern. People don't have to drive, but they do have to eat.

Is this related to the trickle down effect of the rising price fuel that is need to transport the commodities?

When folks bring up trickle down, they forget that the price of gas has gone up 100% since the folks from Texas came into the White House. And the trickle down effect that the price of heating your home AND your business has risen considerably.

And one other little goody relating to the housing 'froth' as Greenspan put it, is that while the price of your house was appraised upwards, up go your property taxes.

………… parent

Inflation is not a worry

... if you are an executive at Halliburton and you can count on billions of dollars in no-bid contracts in Iraq.

If you really believe this is the "fight of our lives," how come you're not in Iraq?

So what Cheney-Bush policies have gone well for America?

………… parent

Well, since we lost jobs in August--

...and a bunch of layoffs have already occurred in September, I think we can pretty much put a fork in the Bush recovery... and 8 million new jobs is weak-- Clinton by contrast created 23 million jobs.  And a lot of Bush's 8 million jobs have been government jobs-- bought and paid for with the trillions in debt that Bush has saddled the country with.

Given that the population in the United States has increased by over 18 million people since 2000, it's no surprise that these measly 8 million jobs haven't lowered the unemployment rate under Bush.  The fact is, you need to create something over 100,000 jobs each month just to keep pace with expanding population.  And we haven't created even come close to that in June, July, and August.

………… parent

Maybe it's weak, and maybe its not ...

But it is hard to argue that 8 million more jobs is bad for America, in addition to all of the other points listed in that reference.

8 million jobs suck

Fed cuts interest rate by 1/2 point.

MSNBC Link

Tuesday responded aggressively to a housing downturn that threatens to spread to the broader economy, cutting its main benchmark interest rate by a half-percentage point and broadly lowering borrowing costs.

"Today’s action is intended to help forestall some of the adverse effects on the broader economy that might otherwise arise from the disruptions in financial markets and to promote moderate growth over time," the Fed said in a statement.

While a rate cut had been widely expected, the aggressive half-point move surprised analysts. The stock market soared immediately after the announcment, with the Dow Jones indutrial average jumping more than 100 points in the initial minutes.

John Cole on the new AG nominee

he makes a good point:

I would caution Democrats not to just usher him through based on the principled arguments presented by Scott Horton. General Petraeus was confirmed under much the same reasoning (the President deserves his pick of General, blah blah blah), the Democrats allowed him through without any opposition, and promptly had it thrown in their face last week while attempting to fulfill their oversight duties:

“How dare you question him? You just confirmed him! Traitors! There should be nothing but complete deference to Herr General!”

here

The same people insisting that the president has every right to choose whomeve he wants then turn around and take any passing nomination to mean that the nominee has congressional carte blanche.

Congress should grill the man and then most likely pass him. Make sure you have a strong record of him saying that he supports the rule of law and an impartial DoJ which you can refer back to when the next scandal comes along.

So again- what are they so damned angry about? I don’t get it. I used to throw around the term the “angry left” myself, but watching this administration do whatever it wants to the cheerleading of imbeciles and first rate hacks, I am surprised the left is not angrier. Bush, the worst President of my lifetime and possible the last century, turned a 51% tightly fought election into a mandate, while the Democrats can’t figure out how to remove one god damned troop from Iraq with 60+% of the public furious about the war.

Again, I don’t get it. What are they so damned mad about? If they had to put up with the crap the left is putting up with, they would be burning cars in the street. If the roles were reversed, the right wouldn’t be pooling their money for an ad in the NY Times- they would burn the god damned building down after stoning the editorial board to death. Bushcare?

Clinton unveiled her plan as Health and Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt said President Bush wants to achieve universal health care before he leaves office.

Leavitt told the USA TODAY editorial board that Bush will veto a Democratic plan emerging from Congress that would add $35 billion in taxpayer subsidies to the Children's Health Insurance Program over five years. In doing so, Leavitt said, Bush will urge Congress to join him in seeking coverage for all Americans.

"He'd like to see the larger debate begin," Leavitt said. "The very best opportunity we have may well be in the next 15 months."

It would be much easier if democrats acted like democrats and republicans acted like republicans.

…………

Think about this...

Leavitt told the USA TODAY editorial board that Bush will veto a Democratic plan emerging from Congress that would add $35 billion in taxpayer subsidies to the Children's Health Insurance Program over five years.

Bush is going to block additional funding to the Children's Health Insurance Program at a rate of $35 billion over five years at the same time he is "committed" to flushing $10-$12 billion a month down the rathole that is Iraq!

And the Republicans are right there with him!

This is about your chosen Party getting its ass handed to it in `08.

I smell huge losses for your side. The war, the economy, Bush vetoing health care dollars for kids (with affordable health care rising in importance to voters) while being "committed" to dropping billions a month in Iraq...

Bush is going to tank you guys by such a large enough margin that it will take you years to recover.

So it's not about what you or I think.

It's about what the voters think. And I love the idea of an ad that has Bush vetoing $35 billion for child health care while continuing his "stay-the-course" rhetoric against the wishes of the American public, likely to be over 70% by the time the election rolls around.

The prejudiced

I just saw it.....

Can't say 6that I was surprised. When one gets on in years, the reality of age-ism becomes all too apparent. But there it was in all its ugliness:

"Medicare D confused the old people."

Yep, us old people are just so dumb. Easily confused. Retirement should be set to, what? 50?

Any president should be foreced to leave office at 45?

No one in a position of importance should older than, say, 55. Because, you know, they are so easily confused. The old people.

I remember getting Artur Rubinstein's Chopin recordings done in his 70s and thinking, "my, how confused his interpretations are. Must be that age thing."

Us old people are like children, really. Can't figure things out. Need some nursemaid to do it for us. You know, like those people who buy $500 hammers. They'd be the ones. they are not confused. Not them.

Excuse me, I've got to go stand in the corner and pee. Wasn't there something i needed to bring out in the open to do that?

Oh, I am so confused, being old.

Man, I hate prejudice. I'll not name the worse than an old south whitey, but just shove it. And never, NEVER present yourself as a caring, unprejudiced individual again.

But, then again, maybe I am just confused about all that.

Being old.

And confused.

…………

Booooo. It's called humor. Come on.

And Medicare Part D did confuse a lot of beneficiaries, who-- guess what?-- happen to be over 65.

Much ado about nothing.  I refuse to tiptoe around people who get off on calling people prejudiced at the drop of a hat.

Your statement was an observation

nothing more, nothing less.

The whole damn Medicare D mess was confusing to everyone young and old alike. So it was an equal age offender.

Nevermind that many older folks were advised to check the internet site for answers. You know the older folks that think the internets are a series of tubes, and don't know what a website is.

Nevermind that many of the folks that were asked to check the internets for answers, can't afford or don't want to mess with those new fangled computers.

………… parent

thank you, missliberties, well said!

………… parent

skymutt disses the old folk

It was nice of missliberties to come along with the explanation that you couldn't find.

There is a difference between saying "it confused the old folks" and saying, "there were so many possibilities that it was somewhat confusing."

And yes, having choices is, I guess, a bad thing. Bet to have Big Brother decide what is best, and force us to take it. You know, the authoritarian approach.

Just as there is a difference between saying, "the application for financial aid was confusing" and saying, "the application for financial aid confused the Negroes."

My bet is that while the slam on old folks rolled off your tongue, the related slam on "Negroes" would not. (Remember, your explanation was that it was confusing, and old folk were confused, as if you would make a similar remark whenever a target group were confused.)

There are still groups for whom prejudice is accepted, "old folks" being one of them. Fat people, for another.

I'm just pointing this out, and asking us to reflect on why this is.

Here, I might tell you that in my area, in the summer before the deadline for choosing, a local reporter on the local paper tried to find some people who were having problems. He could not find any.

Does this mean that there were no problems? No. What had happened is that state and local government workers, as well as NGOs and private organizations had started early to find and solve problems for Medicare recipients in the area, and by six months before the deadline, had solved all the problems.

The reporter got one complaint about the complicated nature of it, from a man who didn't like asking for help.

And, yes, i realize that this wasn't the universal experience.

And yes, i realize that liberal elitists are very comfortable with thinking that people other than them are stupid, can't handle complexity, and need Big Brother to watch over them.

Oops, I've drooled all over my...whatyacallit, the thing you wear on top...Gotta go. So many kinds of clothes, it's just too confusing for an old folk like me!

No apology yet? Disappointing.

It was nice of missliberties to come along with the explanation that you couldn't find.

I was nice of her to point out what I really had no interest in explaining to you, given your ridiculous accusations of prejudice, comparison of me to racists, and so forth.

There is a difference between saying "it confused the old folks" and
saying, "there were so many possibilities that it was somewhat
confusing."

No real difference, hair-splitting on your part. If it's okay to say that the program is "confusing", what the hell is wrong with saying that it's confusing to "old folks", since the program is specifically for "old folks", and "old folks" are the ones who by and large have to deal with the program?

And you do understand that we were trying to limit the comments to the subject line in that diary, right? Nuance was sacrificed many times for the sake of brevity and humor.

I've defended you before, MadScientist, but maybe I just wasn't paying close enough attention. Your wild assertions of prejudice and comparisons of me to racists were a ridiculous and unprovoked attack on my character.

well, skymutt

The statement WAS prejudiced, the comparison to racist remarks was natural, and the fact that you can't see that is really, to be honest, something i didn't expect from you.

All you had to say was that you realized how it could be taken as prejudiced by, say, an old person (like the similar statement about Negroes), and say that you didn't mean to imply that old folks were easily confused. And at least YOU didn't compound it by saying that old people are too stupid or something to surf the net!

Yes, I understood the brevity stuff, but again, I KNOW youy wouldn't have made such a remark about other groups even in brevity. It's alright, you seem STILL to be saying to demean old people as a joke.

And no, I wasn't saying seriously that you were prejudiced. I was joking in a title line meant for brevity. Nuance was sacrificed for brevity. You DO understand that, right? You see, I didn't think you were really prejudiced anyway, just that you didn't see the prejudice in this statement when you typed it. It happens to us all.

I didn't think you'd get all emotional like a girl about it. (Girls, that's not prejudiced, just a joke and meant for unnuanced brevity.)

So, finally:

If it's okay to say that the program is "confusing", what the hell is wrong with saying that it's confusing to "old folks", since the program is specifically for "old folks", and "old folks" are the ones who by and large have to deal with the program?

I really didn't think it would go this way. You really don't see the difference, do you?

What was wrong with saying that the program choices were confusing?

once more, skymutt

go back up and re-read my first entry in this subthread. Does it not appear more than a little arch to you, over drawn, exaggerated for humour?

That's right, it was mostly humour, humour with a little truth and a gentle reminder, that's all. Nothing meant that seriously.

Now why don't you, CLC and missliberties go make fun of fat people.

Okay...

I obviously took your postings literally.  My apologies if I misinterpreted your intent.  I still plead innocent to ageism, but since I was irreverent in my use of the term "old folks", I wouldn't have been offended by a "gentle reminder" if I had known that that's all it was.

I will consider the matter closed with no hard feelings, but let me offer a gentle reminder of my own... if someone is obviously misinterpreting the intent of one of your posts, you might want to clear up the misunderstanding before two days pass.  Just sayin'...

Okay skymutt

Nice ending.

I agree with you and have no defense for reacting the way I did to your response. I apologize.

………… parent

thank you, missliberties

I guess it is true. We doddering old folks are too confused to know how to surf the internet thingy you young whippersnappers keep talking about.

Why are you always whining?

If it's not about how a union screwed you out of a job and ruined your retirement plans, it's about a perceived slight that doesn't exist.

My god, man, take some personal responsibility!

If you really believe this is the "fight of our lives," how come you're not in Iraq?
