A Retrospective on Skymutt's diary.
As most of you are no doubt aware skymutt created quite the phenomenon with his recent diary:
Let's list all of George W. Bush's disastrous incidents, policies, and appointments
Everyone seemed to enjoy the spectacle of one-liner style hit pieces and the rapid fire back and forth debate. While it was certainly engaging it might be worthwhile to look back over the results and see if there are any lessons to be learned:
- Did this exercise change anyone's mind?
- Did this exercise garner any new perspectives?
- Did this exercise provide any additional insights?
- Did this exercise build any new bridges between the factions?
Those are the broader points we might want to consider. On a more individual level, I would be interested in the following:
- Was this exercise "fun" for you, and if so why?
- Do you prefer this style of interaction over a more verbose styles of debate?
- What were the most important points that you took away from this exercise?
- What did you learn about yourself?
- What did you learn about others?
- If you participated, what drew you into the discussion?
I am ready to move on. I apologize in advance to all of you who were hoping to get an actual GoRight reply to your points that are now going to be disappointed. Keep trying though, I am sure our paths will cross in other topics! :)
I look forward to reading anything you feel like sharing on the above topics. I plan to provide my own responses in the comments to this diary but I want to wait a bit to read what others write so as not to influence your responses.
Cheers!

nice job
1. Doubt it, but wasn't intended to
2. New information maybe
3. Dunno
4. Doubt it
1. Yes, because it was something different. I think we should try to accommodate all styles of interaction, from point-by-point debates to free-wheeling complaining.
2. As an occasional change, I like it. Generally, I prefer more in-depth discussion.

I learned that you are not a conservative.
You are a Cheney-Bush sycophant, first and foremost. You care not a whit about conservative values, including fiscal discipline, competency and keeping the government out of the private lives of citizens.
You made clear you believe that the Bush administration has done nothing wrong. Every failure of this administration was excused by you. I have many conservative Republican friends, and not one of them excuses all the misdeeds of this administration as you did in skymutt's diary.
You are not a real conservative. You are an excuser.
That's what I learned.
If you really believe this is the "fight of our lives," how come you're not in Iraq?
Thanks for your input, CheneysLoveSlave.

Ditto on the Larry's brother references from CLC... thanks guys.

Hey, why the indignation when I start retaliating?
But before that its fine?
You guys asked that we stop and I tried to comply, but I'm not going to just let him have a one sided mud slinging fest.

My mistake.
If you really believe this is the "fight of our lives," how come you're not in Iraq?
And I thought he wanted to be Cheneys Love Slave.
My bad.

Use it all you want.

Do you like being an apologist?
Because only an apologist could have offered up what you offered in that diary.

Bah!
No Certified GoRight Replies to my latest round of precision-crafted one-liners? Darn... I had some good ones in there, but I will respect your decision to move on.
Did this exercise change anyone's mind? Highly doubtful. Of course, the changed mind is the crown jewels of political message boards-- highly valued, and extremely rare-- so having not changed anyone's mind is nothing new.
Did this exercise garner any new perspectives? Any disaster that can be reduced to one line must be survivable, right? Maybe the lesson is that as horrible a President as some of us think Bush is, life goes on for us, and that most of us will survive Bush's reign of incompetence, and better days lie ahead, so we should keep a sense of humor about it all and not let ourselves become bitter about things we have little control over.
Did this exercise provide any additional insights? Nothing earth shattering-- you learned about a couble of Bush foibles, which you of course quickly denied were foibles at all. But at least you now are aware that the President was advised by a shoplifter :-)
Did this exercise build any new bridges between the factions? Probably, in that the format largely kept personal attacks out of the equation, so the back-n-forth was largely good-natured.
Was this exercise "fun" for you, and if so why? Yes I enjoyed it quite a bit. There was a challenge aspect of removing the fat from my responses to keep them within the subject line, and many of the responses gave me a chuckle.
Do you prefer this style of interaction over a more verbose styles of debate? I liked it as a change of pace-- sure.
What were the most important points that you took away from this exercise? It's a reminder that we can disagree without being (overly) disagreeable.
What did you learn about yourself? I like to get in the last word. (Okay-- I already knew that about myself :-)
What did you learn about others? People just can't help defying authority. I make a rule of no duplicates, and what does CLC do? Iraq, Iraq, Iraq, right off the bat. (It's ok, CLC.. all is forgiven :-) Somewhere along the line, the hard-and-fast rule prohibiting use of the body of the messages became a guideline, but that worked out okay, so no complaints.
If you participated, what drew you into the discussion? My diary obv-- call me mean-spirited, but I can't resist an opportunity to get in some jabs at Bush.
As a final word to you, GoRight-- I really give you an A+, not a B+, for your participation in the diary, and, for the most part, your overall participation on the site. You seem to keep a sense of humor about things while pulling the weight of about 5 right wingers around here. It just wouldn't be the same if you weren't here.

Thanks for the input.
I'm sure that your one liners argued me into the ground which is why I'm afraid to go back again. :)

What did I do now?

hehe theocrat :)
I always knew you were one of those right wing religious democrats from the Ole Strom Thurmond school.

It's the ugliest color ever, but it's all mine, dammit!
skymutt: accept no substitutes!
I agree. Get him to change it.
Now that I see the color as a color bar it's still not right.
As for my comment above, I updated it. I originally hadn't even read you comment thinking it was simply pulling your one-liners into a post. I then decided to read it and realized my mistake. My bad.

Skymutts dairy was awesome
until it became GoRight flypaper.
We understand that it is your sole mission in life to point out fallcies, real or imagined of all Democrats and their policies and views. It is a tall order, but you are a relentless crusader.
I don't think that you understand that for us on the other side, Skymutt's dairy is a place where we can gather and take solace, by purging ourselves as a group with listing all the huge changes in policy, the monsterous Orwellian mindset created by a propaganda machine, that has gradually taken this country in a direction that many liberals, democrats, republicans, convservatives, libertarians and independents feel is dangerously veering from the original tenets that this country was founded on, includeding the process of government that allows for checks and balances.
For me it had a cathartic effect.
What is most disturbing is that are some still left in this country that don't see what a slippery slope it is, to go further down the path that Bush/Cheney and friends have led this country.
You must admit that when John Dean, Bob Barr, Alan Greenspan, Richard Clark, Brent Snowcroft, and James Baker join in with Democrats say that Bush is taking away to many constitutional checks that there must be some validity to the point they are making.
What is most astounding, is that there are still some that don't see it.
Why do you think Congress's approval rating is 11%? Because the majority of the people in this country want Republicans and Democrats to stand up and get in the way of this runaway train.
Next to go under this Bush policy madness, will be he value of the dollar. Maybe that will be the final wake-up call.
And I do think things are changing. The public is way ahead of the Congress on this.
You are stuck in the 90's bud. Things have changed.
And no I don't want another Clinton Presidency either. Blecchh!
I'm only half stupid
Thanks for your input!
Sorry I ruined it for you, but its what I do! :)
Hmm, I'll take this as a weird sort of complement.
LOL. That actually sounds pretty good. I'll meet you half way and support having the Democrats stand up in front of a runaway train! ( Note: This is a joke. )
