Thursday open thread

- CNN endorses abstinence before marriage (it "rocks", apparently). There's that liberal media for you!

- FOX covers the FBI investigation into arson as the cause of the California fires . Meanwhile, MSNBC has high def photos of the region from the last few days.

- the BBC reports on the U.S.' pledge to add new sanctions on Iran . This is priceless:

Speaking at news conference in Washington, Ms Rice said the US would designate the Revolutionary Guards a "proliferator of weapons of mass destruction" on account of the ballistic missile programme in which it is allegedly involved.

Somehow we seem to get into alleged problems more than actual ones.

How's everyone doing this fine Thursday?

Just a point of clarification:

the U.S. solider was acquitted, not found innocent: the Italian courts found they had no jurisdiction in the case. (Your wording is fine, I just wanted to clarify)

…………

indeed that's what I said :)

The incident is of course sad and unfortunate as Italians are our good allies, but the court was wise not to interfere with an accident of war. Imo.

Here's one for you:

we've been discussing how to translate "всё враздробь" (in the sense of life in general). A few near-hits, but nothing sounds right. Any guesses?

………… parent

everything falling apart?

or "all going to hell"? I am not quite certain as I've never heard it used.

"To discuss evil in a manner implying neutrality, is to sanction it." AR

………… parent

Here's the original context:

it's from an article on Chekhov:

В самом начале ХХ века Чехов угадывает новую формулу человеческого существования: расставание с тенями прошлого, потеря дома, гибель сада, выход на большую дорогу, где ожидает пугающее будущее и жизнь «враздробь»

So "going to hell" is a pretty decent rendering. A funny (and very restrained in that British way) one I read was "topsy-turvey".

Saint, n. A dead sinner revised and edited. - Ambrose Bierce

………… parent

"breaking apart"

or "going to hell" is probably ok but I have a feeling that I can't accurately translate it... might it also be slang for a certain lifestyle? Or is it really just that generic...

Pew Poll...pathetic

Yes it is.

Astonishing really.

And remember these people vote. That is why name recognition is so important.

This is why complex economic theories don't appeal to the electorate. This is why fear mongering works. That is why 30 second TV ads, that costs billions, and provide are so important.

………… parent

it's pathetic

on the other hand being well known is not the same as being well liked :)

I wouldn't worry too much:

I mean, yes, as far as civic involvement in out democratic system, the numbers are abysmal. Then again, more people know Giulani than can find Iraq on a map , so that's not too bad.

This is the funniest/saddest thing I've read all day:

On the positive side, the study noted, seven in 10 young Americans correctly located China on a map

"on the positive side" = 7/10

The reason I wouldn't worry, as far as politics goes, is this: these voters don't show up to primaries, so they won't have much of an impact on which candidate gets picked (which is good). Once the full election is underway, they'll be bombared by that one candidate, so they'll soon know him.

Saint, n. A dead sinner revised and edited. - Ambrose Bierce

………… parent

that is pretty funny/sad

Which is why there is no reason to push for mandatory voting... There are certain segments of the American people who just don't need to vote.

Hmm... do you want to stand by that?

Findings in that survey:

Fewer than three in 10 think it important to know the locations of countries in the news and just 14 percent believe speaking another language is a necessary skill.

Now, does that sound like a (stereotypically) progressive agenda, or a (stereotypically) conservative agenda? :)

Here's a surprising tidbit from the study (pdf!):

Young adults who immigrated and first-generation Americans get an average
of 25.1 questions correct, compared to 29.5 correct answers among later-generation residents.

You'd think crossing national borders would give someone a slightly better geographical consciousness, but apparently not. Then again, the survey found that education level was the strongest predictor of geographical knowledge (the higher the education, the higher the score).

Heh. on the other hand, the campaign season has gotten

ridiculously long too

Since the 1920's into the early 70's, New Hampshire's primary was in March --- you'd have the nominee in June, two months of campaignign till the convention, and another two months of campaigning -- seems Fast Track compared to today, doesn't it?

but then the frontloading insanity slowly began, and now we're full blown crazy! and who benefits? I'd posit the armies of consultants, and media markets. We'll have nominees in early February! (most likely) and an interminable campaign season.

Push back the damn primaries again, and maybe more folks will focus, maybe? there's absolutely no reason to now/ b/c polls consistently show that most folks make up their minds a week or two before they have to vote. What's the rush?

We still have a whole year to go! how INSANE is that!!??

………… parent

I'm actually glad

the Democratic party is punishing states who moved their primaries up past the "earliest" date. Otherwise we'd still be playing leapfrog... although I guess we still are.

Oddly, people I've talked to are furious that the Democratic party has done this, because those states are too "important". Well, maybe, but they chose to break the rules to gain a competitive advantage. Screw 'em.

Reason links to a Rasmussen article .

Ron Pauls good points are his fiscal positions.

He'd be helped in some area's by his anti illegal immigration standing, but he also has a lot of traction with a crowd on that issue that won't be easily accepted by mom & pop America if you know what I mean. ie - some of the more harsh groups that some folks have called racist is what I mean.

I really hope that won't happen. I'll probably just show up to vote in November if that happens. I'm hoping for a Hillary Collapse. Talk about 8 more years of partisanship. I'd think both of these choices would be a supreme disappointment to each side--both sides would be involved in the Battle for Most Electable.

Yes....

Further, he was rated as the 2nd worst republican governor in terms of fiscal responsibility by Cato (I'm told by apologists that's due to Arkansas weird system of taxation), he's supported farm subsidies, and he's a "Fair Trade" guy.

On the flip side, he has signed the Fair Tax pledge.

Finally, his name is "Huckabee."  It just doesn't sound presidential.

…………

Sweet Jesus

Those Democrats will stop at nothing to destroy America! Rep. Eric Cantor sees the future , and wow is it scary:

Let's not mince words, if this Democrat tax hike is adopted, Americans across the country will lose their jobs – plain and simple. If the Democrat tax hike is adopted, small businesses will close and family farms will fold; perhaps more than any other single proposal in modern history, Charlie Rangel's tax hike guarantees a serious economic recession in this country.

Another point of view, from that well-known liberal apologist rag, the WSJ :

Under legislation set to be introduced tomorrow by the House's top tax writer, businesses with foreign subsidiaries would face new limits on their ability to use foreign expenses, such as interest on debt, to reduce their tax bills in the U.S.

In addition, companies that use an accounting method known as last-in, first-out to value their inventories for tax and financial-reporting purposes would be required to shift to a new method -- a move that likely would result in a higher tax bill in many cases.

[...]For individuals, Mr. Rangel's bill also includes big changes, including a repeal of the alternative-minimum tax. To replace the revenue lost with the repeal, as well as other tax breaks aimed at middle and lower-income people, Mr. Rangel would increase the taxes paid by wealthier people. People familiar with the legislation said it would raise taxes on those declaring incomes between $400,000 and $500,000 a year, while those with incomes between $200,000 and $400,000 would benefit or see little change in their tax liabilities.

Just in time for Halloween, the Democrats are coming! The Democrats are coming!

Come, my friends. 'Tis not too late to seek a newer world -- Tennyson

…………

Well, they need some kind of hook.

If their voters don't even know who the Republican candidates are, they need some way to drive people to the polls.

repealing the AMT?? about damn time

Politics is a clash of interests masquerading as a clash of principles. – Anonymous

………… parent

The AMT is smacking us out here in CA.

Cost of living isn't factored in, so higher cost of living areas end up creeping right up into the AMT brackets.

While many things are adjusted for inflation, AMT has never been and isn't set up to do so, consequently more and more of folks who are middle class income folks are getting hit here.

………… parent

Well, I can see why the AMT took so long to get repealed

when it was obvious that nobody thought it was a "good" tax. It had to be a bargaining chip. Well played (politically speaking) by the Dems.

………… parent

Nothing doing

It won't go anywhere in the Senate. Republicans are going to filibuster the repeal of the AMT unless there are other tax cuts that go along with it.

Well played by the Republicans as well, I guess.

Dems are not good poker players. They have always been outplayed by GOP--too much of being defensive. They should learn to play offensive.

Children's health care is so important. And since middleclass people are the majority and they benefit for this, it is very popular.

the vast majority of the US middle class

will not be affected by this. Most of the US middle class has medical insurance for themselves and their children.
