I'm Mitt Romney and I approved these attack ads

[Update at the end.]

If Mitt Romney is trying to get me to vote for him, then he's going about it the exact wrong way. The Romney campaign has gone negative, and I don't like it. I'm not a fan of Mike Huckabee and there's no way I'll vote for him in the primaries, but the Romney ads will not make me move closer to the former Massachusetts governor. Quite the opposite. Factcheck.org fact checks Romney here and here . Quite frankly, this breaking of the 11th Commandment pisses me off. Giuliani is now my third choice, and Romney is fourth.

More below the fold...
Now Romney has turned his sights on John McCain. If the Arizona Senator desires to respond, he doesn't need a deep-voiced narrator. He can use Romney's own words .

Update: Factcheck.org weighs in on Romney's attack ads on McCain, and here's their summary:

* It claims McCain "voted to allow illegals to collect Social Security." That's untrue. Nobody who is in the country illegally could be paid any Social Security benefits under McCain's immigration bill.

* It implies McCain supported "amnesty" for illegal immigrants. That word isn't accurate. Illegal immigrants wouldn't have received a blanket pardon under McCain's bill. Instead, they would have had to pay thousands in penalties and fees to gain legal status. In fact, in 2005 Romney called McCain’s proposal "reasonable" and said it wasn’t amnesty.

* The ad says Romney "cut taxes" in Massachusetts. While he did cut some taxes – for example, enacting business tax credits – tax rates remained unchanged. Plus, Romney raised state revenues by hundreds of millions of dollars per year by increasing fees and closing corporate tax loopholes.

I don't know who his campaign strategists are, but they're making a huge mistake, and Mitt is making a huge mistake by approving these attack ads.

Not much chance McCain will respond

You can start rumors that he fathered a black child and he'll just roll over and hug you like you're his brother.

…………

Oh, please....Romney screwed up a lot of things.

Romney screwed up a lot of things when he was governor of the Bay State, he knows little to nothing about how to manage projects. The big Dig has been a disaster, he chose to run it himself instead of appointing someone more knowledgeable to do that job, and the fatal death of a Jamaica Plain woman on route to Logan Airport resulted. Romney--who're you kidding. You were a disaster as governor of our state, and you'd be a disaster as President, also.

Regarding McCain: Frankly, I think McCain's too sneaky and too much of a loose cannon to hold the United States' highest office, if his Vesuvian temper is any indication.

…………

But that was before he was a born-again conservative

All of those screw-ups were because he was a liberal back then, all those years ago.

I try not to personally attack people, but anyone who can't see through his shtick is being willfully ignorant. Romney stands for nothing but Romney. The kicker is that the people who derided Kerry for being a waffler somehow support this clown. I haven't seen such a 180 since Lyndon LaRouche.

This is nonsense

Factcheck.org may be good for checking facts and finding sources behind them but they're horrible at editorializing!

Factcheck.org is parsing and not applying common sense for these arguments.

#1 -- Really, Thats' assuming the government actually enforces the provisions in the bill seeing as though they (the government) are incapable or unwilling to do so today there is absolutely no reason to beleive it will under his bill. Illegals are being paid right now and would continue under the McCain bill. That's a fact!

#2 -- use all the semantic language you like this was an "amnesty" bill, Period!

#3 -- Sorry, you said it yourself Factcheck.org "While he did cut some taxes" end of story his claim was accurate your spin was not!

McCain should go dark on the immigration issue. Every time he opens his mouth about it he losses votes.

Factcheck.org needs to reevaluate its impartiality here!

IN the Upside Down World

of the ruling elite.....

Wall Street is after quarterly profit margins on a global scale...... they don't care if cheap labor comes from illegal immigrants from Mexico, Pakistan or Guatamala.... just support my CEO.

The question isn't the laws, it is who can boost your quarterly dividend for the highest profit capitalization, borders be damned, whether it's the Mexican border or the Chinese border.

That's where Mitt gets his support. He is CEO, quarterly profit, friendly. McCain..... not so much.

The logical successor to the Bush Power Machine is John McCain, who is tough on the War, the central focus for the Bush years.

Why isn't Bush endorsing McCain?

Remember Jack Abramoff,.. McCain chaired the committee that brought his money laundering scheme down, right alongside Bush allies, Ralph Reed, Gail Norton and Tom Delay. McCain subdued the K street project by standing for decency.

It is the economy, stupid.

and this is news

because.....

Bird Dog is a McCain supporter. McCain brought down the all powerful Abramoff who helped divert money into the RNC coffers. How quickly we forget.

I am just pondering why Bush isn't supporting McCain......... since they have the same position on the War, Immigration, and now apparently earmarks.

OH and thanks for the pleasantries.

Again...

...none of this has anything to do with the topic of the post!

I haven't forgotten anything I remember Abramoff. I remember Harry Reid receiving 5 times the amount of money from Abramoff then did Delay. I remember Sandy Berger stealing and destroying documents. I also remember Alan Mollohan's misdeeds while sitting on the House Ethics Committee...

I just don't need to tie them into every single issue I see posted like some 6 degrees of Keven Bacon game.

It's OK to move on...

We're not talking semantics

We're talking real definitions of words, Steven. Look up the definition and see yourself. Just because you declare it "amnesty" does not make it so.

Romney is misleading by saying he cut taxes. By your measure, a politician who cut one tax but raised four others can claim that he cut taxes. I disagree with such a notion.

………… parent

Charles

you can play all the word games you like with referring to the strict definition of the word amnesty -- the fact is the bill was going to take a group of lawbreaking non-citizens and make them citizens, because the have to pay some sort of restitution to fall into a category that puts them barely outside the official strict definition of the word amnesty is semantics -- and quite frankly Crap!!!

Romney is misleading by saying he cut taxes.

Only in the same sense that McCain is saying he's tough on immigration -- Now!

Of course these politicians are going to try to project their themselves in the best favorable light they can. But Factcheck.org saying Romney didn't cut taxes is engaging in the same type of behavior they're trying to take him to task for and their argument is weak!

I realize you see this differently looking through your candidates lens so we'll have to agree to disagree here.

Words mean things

And that is no game, Steven. It's basic English. Seriously, this discussion is one reason why we have dictionaries, to bring to attention folks like you who redefine words and then use these redefinitons to demagogue politicians.

Only in the same sense that McCain is saying he's tough on immigration.

Strawman. What McCain actually said is that he learned his lesson from last summer, and that he would focus on enforcement first. When border governors certified that the borders were secure, then his proposal would address how to deal with the 12± million illegals who are already here.

I realize you see this differently looking through your candidates lens...

Another strawman. You will note--in this very post--that I had the same complaints about Romney's attack ads on Huckabee, and I believe I did say that there was no way that I would vote for Huckabee in the primaries. My earlier post on Huckabee is here .

Deal with it, Steven. Your candidate is playing dirty politics, and it's well past time that you accept that unpleasant reality.

………… parent

Please

First: I don't need a lecture from you about word games -- ask 9 out of 10 Americans if they think that was an amnesty bill and they will answer in the affirmative. So you need to deal with that. If it walks like a duck.....

Second: McCain actually said is that he learned his lesson Ok then I and most conservatives look at McCain like that of a spouse being asked to take back the cheating husband, you know that betrayal and heartbreak are just around the corner!

Lastly: If you spent any time at my site or RS you'd know my candidate is Fred Thompson... the only reason I responded to this is that I saw what nonsense it was.

I stand by my assertion that Factcheck.org is not only reaching here but needs to rethink is impartiality here as well.

So perception = reality?

Perception = perception, and reality = reality.

So actual definitions of words are "word games"? C'mon, Steven, don't pull that crap. You're doing the exact same thing that liberals do when they call GOPers fascists.

The "betrayal" argument you're making is just silly. If you have an example of him breaking pledges, then you'd have a point. The problem with McCain is that--from time to time--he takes positions that Republicans don't like, and he sticks to those positions. On immigration, he changed his emphasis to enforcement first.

I'm an editor at Redstate with front-page posting privileges, and I visit the site almost every day. Forgive me for not knowing every diarist's choice for the GOP nomination.

………… parent

I know who you are...

...and I don't expect you to know every posters candidate I assumed being a constant poster and member of the RS community for over two years you may have noticed -- my bad

If you choose to take the word amnesty so literally as to not acknowledge how close the bill is to amnesty as to be almost indistinguishable then that cool we've beaten this horse to death and we disagree

My analogy about McCain is correct -- fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me -- It's not like I'm the only conservative that feels this way about the man RS is full of them!!!

In the end it looks like were arguing for arguments sake as it seems we're both backing other candidates in this race.

Going meta

I find this thread very interesting. Red bar v red bar. I love it. Intraparty debate is just as important as interparty, IMHO, and the single-party sites don't seem to encourage such discussions either.

Thank you, gentlemen.

Now if we could just get our own blues to challenge each other more . . .

Purple challenging purple OK?

In all fairness, it is kind of hard to get worked up over taxation rate and tarrif discussions while you've got a bunch of pro-torture enhanced interrogation, habeas-doesn't-apply-to-your-family, warrantless wiretapping, let's invade Iran types in the room.

Priorities being what they are.

Well sure, when you put it *that* way

But some days it's not quite so exciting around here ;}

Besides, debate still sharpens thought even when it's with someone you generally agree with.

And there's plenty of blue v blue stuff that's masquerading as yellow, purple, or black, that's *not* financial.

Unfortunately in politics

perceptions does equal reality.

That's why push polls, sounds bytes, mailings and media buys are effective, especially for those that are too busy to pay attention to the details.

If you knew that so and so, did this and that would you be more or less likely to vote for the other guy.

I would prefer McCain a thousand times over that plastic, flip flopping Romney :)

The irony that the same people went after Kerry like white on rice as a flip flopper are now all about flip flop Romney, who seems willing to say anything for a vote. It's bizarre.
