U.S. says Iran gunboats harassed its warships - "Officials describe incident as a 'significant provocative act'"

The NH primaries are coming up tomorrow and it looks like Obama and McCain are going to come out on top. Will that drive a stake through Clinton's and Romney's campaigns?

RS is planning a custom platform rollout in February

Should be interesting to see what they came up with. I'm surprised they aren't just hacking up Drupal, seems easier. However, they need an additional $25,000 dollars, so if that appeals to you by all means send them some cash =P

I’ll be blunt: I hate asking you for money. But I hate even more to imagine what America will be like if someone like Hillary Clinton or Barack Hussein Obama wins the presidency in November. RedState can help prevent that nightmare from coming true – but only if we’re offering the best possible web experience to the widest possible audience.

Come, my friends. 'Tis not too late to seek a newer world -- Tennyson

…………

So much for faith in capitalism

This comes from a recent Redstate email on the topic:

The good news first: RedState.com is about to embark on a major upgrade of our website that will make it easier, more informative, and just plain more fun for you to visit.

The bad news: our liberal “friends” – you know, the ones who believe so strongly in free speech and open debate – have done what they can to prevent us from making these improvements, so that our influence will be minimized just as we head into the 2008 presidential primary season.

No, our Blue State buddies haven’t succeeded in stopping us from improving our website. But they’ve made it more difficult and more expensive – which is why I’m coming to you for help.

Let me explain …

You see, when we started RedState in May of 2004, we used a website program called Scoop — the same program a lot of similar sites on the left used. But, as the number of visitors to our site grew, Scoop kept crashing on us.

If we’d been a liberal website, we would have been able to fix the problem quickly and relatively cheaply. The online left loves Scoop. Unfortunately, there weren’t really any conservative Scoop developers out there to help us. We kept crashing and were out of money. We had to close down or take drastic action.

Well, we didn’t close down. We ditched Scoop and moved to the best alternative at the time, a program called Drupal. But, in accomplishing the switch, budget constraints forced us to sacrifice some popular site features in order to alleviate the strain on our overused servers.

Needless to say, we always regarded those “downgrades” as temporary, and we hoped to restore the eliminated features – and to add new and even better ones – as soon as we could afford to.

Unfortunately, we still can’t afford to. But we’re convinced that America can afford even less to have us operating at anything less than our absolute peak potential during the coming presidential election season.

So we’ve decided to move ahead with our upgrades without delay, and despite not having the cash on hand – hoping and praying that RedState.com readers like you will help us make up the shortfall with a generous donation...

(yadda yadda yadda)

This was a four-snort email.

Oh those evil lefties! They won't volunteer to help a website that routinely calls them traitors. The bastards!

And Redstate really wants to pay for their own upgrade... they really really do... but they just can't because the lefties made everything so expensive. I mean it's not like they changed to a for profit model with paid advertising and are owned by a media publishing outfit... oh... wait.

So fork over the cash, suckers, because Redstate will really make the difference in the coming election; "we’re convinced that America can afford even less to have us operating at anything less than our absolute peak potential during the coming presidential election season"!!!!1!11!!!!

Erick should be ashamed of such pathetic pandering.

Ridiculous

I don't know that any custom CMS software could be much better than the FOSS packages already out there. Scoop is probably the most mature of the bunch. I've said many times, I like Slash the best. Drupal doesn't do it for me, but then I don't pay the bills here :-).

If Erick can't find people to do custom work on Scoop for him at a price determined by the market, then balls to him. The idea that a certain program can even be co-opted by a group is an incredible claim itself. These programs are free software. Anyone can extend their functionality if they are knowledgeable programmers. And believe me, there is no dearth of conservative coders.

I also have to wonder how competent the admins are there if they can't keep the site running. At the very least, they could buy a few more servers for load balancing. If traffic is so high, then their ad-revenue should be through the roof.

I think it's pretty sad

When they first launched Drupal, I sent them an email offering to help with at least one feature or more (like implementing the "parent comment" link) and woulda helped more to change their atrocious design, but never received a reply.

$25,000 seems like a lot... But to design it from scratch it would cost more than $25,000.

………… parent

I think the 25 grand is on top of whatever they budgeted

I would really like to know how much Markos paid for the custom overhaul of scoop that dKos runs.

For a small site I think we have excellent features -- it's one of the best drupal sites I've seen in terms of functionality, with the major problems and complications due to the server rather than software.

Edit: so, let me know when you want me to email everyone asking for $25,000 for your past and future efforts... just $1000 from 25 readers would do it! Heh.

that's funny. I like xkcd - good stuff :) So is Ron Paul gonna contest NH or what? A 3rd place would be nice to put Huckster in his place.

………… parent

NH is the place to do it

If Paul can't get ~15% in such a libertarian-friendly state he's not going to have any impact in the general running as a third party candidate. And if Huckabee can get ~15% even in NH then I think he looks good to be the eventual nominee. Lots to watch on the GOP side beyond McCain dealing a potential death blow to the Romney campaign.

IMO, yes and yes

and also Edwards, of course. OTOH McCain, Giuliani, and Huckabee will have to fight it out, and the losers on the GOP side will still have a lot of influence via endorsements.

Staking candidacies

Will that drive a stake through Clinton's and Romney's campaigns?

I doubt it will kill either, although it will definitely hurt. I suspect Hillary will not be as damaged as Romney based simply on the number of contenders. Hillary is looking at effectively a three way race. The Republicans are looking at more of a five or even six way race. That will make it a lot harder for Romney to recover.

makes sense

Did you watch the NH Dem debate? I don't know why they put that dimwit Richardson in there, what a joke.

I think after NH it will effectively be a 2 person race with Edwards fizzling and fading. The problem for Hillary I think is that Obama is getting entirely too much momentum from the stupid Iowa caucus. I hope she can stop it but NH will add to the momentum,

On a non-political note,

Have you seen the latest trailer for The Dark Knight

Looks awesome. Summer can't come fast enough!

Batman Begins was excellent too. I liked the old Batman, with Jack Nicholson, but the new films seem to have more depth (as well as better action sequences).

I like the newer version

because it's more serious. I like the older Burton ones too but they just don't compare.

I read the background info on the movie at Wiki. They say Heath Ledger stayed by himself in a hotel for a month to isolate himself and to flesh out his character and perfect his Joker's mannerisms in front of a mirror. Hey, nobody ever said acting was easy!

I HATE THE BATMAN MOVIES

I love the batman character, which is precisely why I hate the movies. Even Batman Begins, which was, in all fairness, a huge step up from the Tim Burton crap, was still bad. It had some redeeming features, but it just wasn't good.

I like Christian Bale, but he can't play batman. At all. He has a weak chin, he's a small guy, and that stupid voice! When he's in the batman persona he does this incredibly fake deep voice that sounds like a 14 year old imitating their dad on the phone to the school office. It is so grating.

I guess my lack of comic expertise makes a little more lenient to big screen adaptations. Oh well.

………… parent

The batman movies are a huge sore point for me

I particularly get annoyed that they did such a good job adapting spiderman (a character I dislike) to the big screen and so terrible with batman (a character I love).

Although I have some hope that they might do a good Dark Knight Returns.

The 300 and Sin City were both Frank Miller graphic novels and they ended up being very good films because the fiolms pretty much just copied the comics almost frame by frame. If they did that with the DKR I'd be in bliss.

I guess my lack of comic expertise makes a little more lenient to big screen adaptations. Oh well.

It's almost always easier to appreciate a movie when you don't know the books first. There are some fantastic Batman stories out there. Seriously look at picking up Dark Knight Returns. It ranks up there with Sandman as not just great comics but actually great literature. That may sound silly if you haven't read any really good comics but they do exist.

Christian Bale

makes a decent Bruce Wayne, crappy batman.

To be fair to him it is a damn hard thing to pull off because you need somebody who can be both big and physically imposing as all hell, but also look like a pretty boy fop. I always wanted Billy Zane to do the part, because he's the only one I could think of to do both sides pretty well.

For Dark Knight Returns, where you have a much older Bruce Wayne, I think Mickey Rourke could do well (especially after seeing him as Marv in Sin City).

UK standard of living rises above that of America

for the first time in over a century. You have to link through Sadly No! to get to the actual article.

So now were getting beaten by the Brittish of all socialized countries. Oh how there must be much gnashing of teeth over at RedState! No? They don't care that a country of soccer hooligans has pantsed the US citizenry as far as their standard of living goes? Guess they need the money worse than they say.

So, give till it hurts. Send all your spare cash to Ender & Brenden (& they may send some to RedState, let's hope they have better things to do with moolah though).

…………

There was some discussion of this in another thread

Using GDP per capita versus GDP per capita adjusted for cost of living. As your link puts it,

But the average Briton does not actually feel more wealthy than his or her American counterpart. Goods and services are cheaper in the U.S., meaning that even if they are earning less, they can afford to buy more.

Something for the conservatives to hang on to =P Still very interesting news, and indicative of just how crappy the dollar is these days.

Don't send your spare cash to us, we wouldn't know what to do with it =)

Come, my friends. 'Tis not too late to seek a newer world -- Tennyson

Yep, they immediately admit that it's completely misleading

Comparing "standard of living" without taking into account the price level is pretty bad. Typical media silliness.

Really, this is just a reflection of the weaker dollar.

Keep in mind, Kindness

that Britain is less socialized than its continental counterparts. In fact, it's the most "liberalised" G-8 economy in Europe.

Plus, the Pound has been very strong these last 10 years or so since Europe went on the Euro. One effect of this is lots of stability for foreign investors and lower prices on imports for Brits.

The complexity of Sarbanes Oaxley (sp?) also sent a lot of IPOs to London from NYC. Britain has actually been loosening up quite a bit and tax competition and pro-growth policies from up and coming economies in Eastern Europe are forcing the Continental Powers to adapt or stagnate and Britain started before the others. Markets within Europe are expanding and becoming more competitive. Ireland started even earlier and has been a major success story.

Does this this all tell the whole tale? No. But it is part of the mix. There's a lot happening.

………… parent

Good responses, all of them.

In all honesty, it was the headline that prompted me to link the article over. I couldn't help the snark factor.

Would I rather be here in the US or over in England? I'm a yankee. I'll go to the UK one day as a tourist (not with the current exchange rate), or if it's the last Pink Floyd (with John Waters) or Led Zepelin concert ever, but I'll choose to live here in the states.

Double standard for Clinton?

From John Cole , hardly a Hillary supporter:

What you saw was someone making the point that there is more to change than just supporting change, and that change takes hard work. And that offends people? Seriously- change is work, and that is the point she is trying to drive home. And she has a right to be a little frustrated. What exactly has John Edwards done? Not much when he was in the Senate, if you remember the Republican talking points from the past election. What major bills does Obama have under his belt?

Quite frankly, I hate to say this, but I think what we are actually seeing is a double-standard here, and the feminists may be right. This is all about Hillary being a woman. John Edwards has been 150 times as angry the whole campaign, and has built his entire campaign around it. Howard Dean was angry, and people lapped it up. Here, Hillary isn’t really angry, just matter-of-fact and frustrated, and people are giving her sh*t.

Maybe... Hillary's been labeled everything from shrew to b*tch for decades now, so it's not like this negative framing is new, but it's hard to argue that a man would be attacked in the same way for the same actions. To some extent I feel like that's just tough luck -- she gets some breaks for being a woman, she gets some unfair criticism. I dunno. My differences with her have to do with her policies and her method of practicing politics, but then I'm a particularly enlightened voter ;-)

Come, my friends. 'Tis not too late to seek a newer world -- Tennyson

Legislative record

Here is an overview of Obama's Senate record, here is Edward's , and here is Clinton's .

Once you look at what they've actually done, Obama comes out pretty well, I would say, especially for his admittedly short term in national office. I'm not the only one who thinks so , either.

Come, my friends. 'Tis not too late to seek a newer world -- Tennyson

Clinton claims a lot of experience

that should be credited to her husband.

Obama gets the best grade on consistency, in my humble opinion.

It is the economy, stupid.

………… parent

I think there is a pretty clear double standard

because she's a woman, but a much bigger double standard because she's a clinton.

Ah well. She's hardly my favorite candidate but it would be nice to see her get a fair shake, instead of having the conservative framing get so routinely accepted.

Go Bucks!

I hope at least one of the SC faithful will join with me in wishing the Buckeyes good luck against LSU tonight. If there's one thing that can bring together liberal and conservative Ohioans, it's Ohio State football.

After watching a documentary on the OSU-Michigan rivalry, I came to realize that college (and for that matter high school) football does not take on religion-like status in most areas of the country like it does here in Ohio. I suppose you have to be from Ohio to really understand how important a game that "glorifies xenophobic tribal structures" is to us.

You might be able to find the documentary in question, which does a good job of explaining the rivalry and OSU/Michigan football to non-fanatics. It's called The Rivalry , produced by HBO.

Borderline.....

Probably real, but then a nice attack in the next sentence. Probably worth a gain of one and a half polling points.

Her mistake was using W's campaign tactics, not letting herself be herself, and using her husband as a bridge to the future. Her message, I will fight to bring the past into the future????

Her campaign seems to be letting her rip off that mask today. The question is how many of the 'bankers' for her campaign will stay with after tomorrow.
