Wednesday Open Thread
- Gov. Romney wins Michigan handily although state staffers mistakenly send out a press release congratulating Sen. McCain. In line with Bird Dog's essay about Romney's proposed federal industrial policy
, dailykos' LithiumCola wonders if conventional wisdom has it backwards: is Romney pulling voters because he's not like Reagan?
- The situation in Kenya continues to disintegrate , as policemen fire shots over protest rallies, which they have deemed an "inappropriate" response to the disputed election. Hopes of outside mediation between opposition (although parliamentary majority) leader Raila Odinga and recently re-elected President Mwai Kibaki fell apart when the agreed mediator, former U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan, fell ill. Tribal identity between the two political opponents is the defining factor in waves of violence
that have swept the country since the election.
- Fox news film critic Roger Freidman feels that the upcoming monster flick Cloverfield "disses" (his word) 9/11 "by re-enacting scenes of buildings exploding and massive clouds of debris for fun and profit." Freidman might have forgotten that the genre's granddaddy, Godzilla, debuted less than a decade after the bombings of mainland Japan. In other entertainment news, actor Brad Renfro of Apt Pupil and Ghost World was found dead at 25
, causes still unknown.

They're at it again, but now they're Swift Boating McCain.
I know it should come as no shock to any of us but Mailer's have gone out in SC accusing McCain of collaborating with his captors and betraying his fellow POWs.
Where has Karl Rove & his current incarnations been these last few weeks? I can see his fingerprints all over this one. It'll only be a matter of time till they start talking about illegitamate black babies again.
On the lighter side, there's only one GOP candidate that beats all the rest at being a loser: Rudy Giuliani.
"He has perfected the art of underperforming to the point that his campaign now insists it was all part of his game plan. He's been reduced to watching from the sidelines and praying for other people to lose - like McCain in Michigan so his momentum would be stalled - rather than getting in the game and winning himself. In fact, Rudy's campaigned so badly that the latest poll shows him losing New Jersey, which had a front-row seat for his shining moment during 9/11."

His "strategy"
will go down as one of the most boneheaded moves in the history of electoral politics.
People have forgot that he's even running. Your average primary voter is too invested in voting with the herd. They want to vote for a winner. Rudy isn't a front-runner anymore, so there's a risk in voting for him that doesn't exist in a vote for McCain, Romney, or Huckabee.

Decent article, but
man, is he a terrible writer. Jokes at his expense aside, I wish he'd have stressed the 'unpaid bills' aspect instead of leaving it a near afterthought at the end: the telcos have sabotaged their best defense, at least from a PR point of view, by cutting off the program until bills are paid. Since the main line of defense has been that their lawbreaking was a necessary wartime act (go Qwest!), that does not look good for them.

Who wants in for debate this Thursday night?
Need a topic, a pro, and a con. Moderator is also available, otherwise I can do it. This is another "Thunderdome" debate -- roughly half an hour, no pressure, don't need to bring anything besides your opinions and a willingness to think on your feet.
Last week we did NASA should send humans to Mars
, contested by Stinerman and Tlaloc. It was fun, people showed up in chat with running commentary.
Some possible topics:
** 1. The US should legalize all drugs
** 2. Corporations should be socially responsible
** 3. Unitary Presidential power is out of control
** 4. The death penalty should be abolished
** 5. SC Justices should have term limits
** 6. There is a recession coming
** 7. Other...
Who wants in?
Come, my friends. 'Tis not too late to seek a newer world -- Tennyson
I think the War on Drugs topic
would be a good choice for Ka1igu1a or Adam. I'm against the War on Drugs but don't feel knowledgeable enough to do it.
Of course, who would do the counter argument??
The Corporations one is a toughy and rather vague....which lends to people defending non-opposite and different points and talking past each other. You'd need to hone that one down a bit.
I'm against the war on drugs too
but I could argue against legalizing all drugs. I sort of skewed that question so that we could get people here on both sides.
Knowledge is vastly overrated for these short debates =)
Come, my friends. 'Tis not too late to seek a newer world -- Tennyson
Part of the problem
with repealing (at the very least) legislation aimed at too-harsh or nonsensical criminalization of marijuana (for example) is that no politician wants to be the one faced with with a "pro-drug" slur come reelection time. And the demographic that would likely buy into that kind of scaremongering is not the demographic that posts on blogs like this. So we're stuck with general agreement (for once!)
Saint, n. A dead sinner revised and edited. - Ambrose Bierce
Yes, it will probably have to be a Nixon-to-China
sort of thing. Some very influential hardcore Republican with secret libertarian tendencies will say the war on pot is an inefficient use of resources and that will provide cover for the dirty hippy liberals to pass legislation.
Even if we generally agree, we can still debate! It's interesting to try to make a case one way or the other. Since the whole thing is addressing questions from the moderator nothing is canned, so it's a lot more lively than researching and writing a long diary on the topic.
Come, my friends. 'Tis not too late to seek a newer world -- Tennyson
My two cents for the day, folks;
A) There's Mitt Romney, the ex-governor of the Bay State, being a sleaze as usual.
B) It rankles me no end when the meterologists sensationalize things when a big winter nor'easter storm is predicted. Sure they have to forecast and predict, but does that mean they have to send people into "lizard brain" or panic mode, where they end up flocking to the grocery stores in droves and buying out the whole store? I don't think so, particularly in urban areas. What's wrong with able-bodied people walking to the store nearby and just buying a little bit at a time, instead of freaking out like that? It's ridiculous, imho. Seriously, one would think that the end of the world is near, or that Armegeddon is coming, with the way people flip out before ordinary nor'easters come.
Second Life meeting Tonight 5:30pm Pacific time
Drop in for an hour of chat.
Ender and Charles (and Prime!), I will not have BH's help tonight, so if y'all can make it and help me keep the conversation moving, I would appreciate it greatly.
Swords Crossed group membership is up to 41, by the way.
There are a few other interesting SL happenings:
Discussion of the color line in SL versus real life and one talking about the color line in the US
A fair tax discussion tomorrow night
And this one, which I plan to attend:
"The human race divides politically into those who want people to be controlled and those who have no such desire." --R. Heinlein
Thanks as usual purpleface
Sounds like the group is really growing!
Are you by any chance going to also attend that first event? I'd love to know what the SL community consensus is on avatar appearance and how people respond.
Come, my friends. 'Tis not too late to seek a newer world -- Tennyson
I can try
But no promises. It's part of the charm of SL that everyone's attendance and schedule is extremely fluid -- it's very hard to plan much of anything in advance. I can have six people commit to coming tonight and have none of them show. It's just how it works. Real life interferes, friends you didn't expect to see log on (like Prime with insomnia at 2 AM, keeping me up all night), or your friends suggest something else.
I have heard (and read) quite a bit about this topic however. General consensus is that yes, appearance matters greatly in SL, much more so than in real life. Probably because it is so easy to be young, beautiful, well-dressed, to move nicely, dance well, etc. Some of the fashionistas have done the "fat for a week" experiments and universally agree that beauty matters in establishing relationships. If you are ugly, folks tend to ignore you; if you are a furry, folks tend to stereotype you.
I have noticed that those who are trying to portray a serious "I'm here for the conversation (or coding or building or whatever), not the relationships" type of demeanor pay little attention to their appearance. Kind of like the "I want you to like me for my mind" attitude. I don't quite agree with that approach, because there are many other stylistic ways to present yourself as serious-minded without looking like you just fell off the turnip truck.
Folks that prefer non-human avatars tend to gravitate to each other. Even within those communities, however, there are standards of beauty. And a bit of reverse-discrimination too. Last night, during the debate, a few Dems were gathered in Luskwood, a furry community. I went to chat with Hervy, the Edwards campaign leader I had not seen in a while. I was one of two human avatars there, and the other did not participate in our political discussion. They were civil, but I was definitely an outsider.
"The human race divides politically into those who want people to be controlled and those who have no such desire." --R. Heinlein
No worries, I was just curious, and your response
answered some of my questions anyway. The beauty thing makes sense, I guess... but it's a bit disconcerting for some reason.
We have touched on the gender bit before here, haven't we, and the furry thing I have to admit I don't much care about because I don't see a relevant real-world parallel (yes I know there are people who dress up but only a few). The race thing in particular seems like fertile ground for finding out how people view themselves (who picks a different "race" in SL? Why?) and others (in a situation where skin color is completely user controlled, do people still notice it? Judge it?).
Come, my friends. 'Tis not too late to seek a newer world -- Tennyson
Some choices
Here's the link to the winners of the "calendar girl" contest...as you can see, two of the twelve choose dark skins. I have no idea whether or not that matches their real life skin.
But, most were chosen for significant accomplishments as well as looks; they describe them on that site. Just so that beauty thing doesn't irk ya so bad ;}

Reason says Lew Rockwell
Come, my friends. 'Tis not too late to seek a newer world -- Tennyson
Could be
If true, that confirms my beliefs about Rockwell, Rothbard, and a lot of other "prominent libertarians". They're just old, angry white men who care very little about civil/individual rights, but just about the government taking their money.

The paleocon-allied strand of libertarianism
is certainly much less appealing than the brand pushed by Cato and Reason these days. I find I agree with about 75% of what someone like Radley Balko writes.
I thought the article was pretty convincing and fair.
Come, my friends. 'Tis not too late to seek a newer world -- Tennyson
Yeah, he was always the prime suspect.
It's a sad, sad story.
Lew Rockwell is a point of tension in the libertarian world. He has many admirable views and I do like a lot of his writing.
However, he the driver of the paleo-libertarian/paleo-conservative movement and his deep philosophical underpinnings for such a stance are not well-shared in the larger libertarian movement.
In fact, Cato/Reason and the Rockwell worlds splintered pretty harshly in the 80s.
Cato/Reason's approach is to affect policy and ideas in a more congenial manner that is more pragmatic and palatable to the larger public. The socio-cultural view is more urban, cosmopolitan and dare I say "liberal"(?).
Lew Rockwell, on the other hand believed in veering off that path and toward one that favored strict constitutuionalism, states rights, anarcho-captialism and the promotion of tradition. He felt the movement needed a passionate base and that there was one to be had among the disaffected and strict anti-state social traditionalists (of sorts). He calls it paleo-libertarianism. See his Wiki entry
.
The idea is that an anarcho-captialist society needs social strength to fend off the decadence. He came to this conclusion as being a needed component of a stateless society.
I don't agree with that aspect.
He feels the Cato/Reason approach is watered down and too cozy with the idea of minarchism.
So Rockwell began to cater to this receptive paleo element in society to raise money for activism and campaigning. But it has its costs. And Paul and Lew are long time friends.
Long story short, this leaves Paul in no man's land. Many libertarians are aware of this matter and don't want the libertarian label to be associated with this flavor and some of its details. So Paul's get support from that target paleo elemet even though most of his support comes from a great many who look beyond this crap even though they don't approve because they know Paul isn't like that.
Meanwhile, many prominent Reason and Cato types along with the GMU based crowd remain quiet and tepidly neutral toward Paul because they like most of positions but don't like a certain few and certainly don't like the flavoring of libertarianism that comes with it. They fear their movement will get tarnished or misunderstood.
I can't say I blame them.
In a way, it's kinda like the tension you see
between Mainstream Liberals and Greens or Mainstream Conservatives and Constitution Party zealots.
Thanks, very clear and useful post
You should expand it into a diary/story some time. I'm sure it's all completely elementary to the libertarian crowd, well-known history, but it's helpful to have this explained for those of us coming from a different political background.
Come, my friends. 'Tis not too late to seek a newer world -- Tennyson
Yea, I suppose I could expand
but I'm not so sure how useful or interesting it would be for most people here.
That wiki link above to Lew Rockwell is pretty could and contains links to venture further.
Steve Horwitz
, an Austrian Economist and blogger, has written quite a bit on the matter. He says that while the economics of Paul is all fine and good, he quite against the larger label that the Lew Rockwell angle puts on the campaign with social issues. He's very concerned about perception to the unsuspecting non-libertarian masses.
He fell out of favor with that crowd and vice-versa for these very specific reasons.
This recent post

Are all you Republicans looking for someone to vote for?
Guess who just called Reagan better than Clinton?
His (obviously not Hillary) exact words were "Reagan Changed Direction Of Country In Way Bill Clinton Didn't". Yes, you now have the Presidential candidate of your dreams. Who you say? Well, if you haven't linked, you won't know it, but you're gonna vote for Obama!

Actors are popular...
Whenever they get an actor to sign on to their agenda they get as giddy as a bunch of pre-teens at a Hanna Montana concert.
So far we have Fred Thompson, Chuck Norris, Ron Silver, one of the Baldwins, I think....
People love their celebrities, so the Republican brand is trying to cash in where they can.

Dozens Claim They Spotted UFO in Texas
.That's how residents near the west Texas town of Stephenville described an object they spotted in the sky one night last week.
Dozens of the town's residents — including a pilot and a police officer — said a UFO hovered over the farming community for about five minutes last Tuesday before streaking away into the night sky.
Lest you think this is some National Enquirer, no it isn't. I heard it this evening on NPR driving home. They are coming. It's gonna be fun watching fundies heads explode when they realize they can no longer claim humans to be "Gods Only Children".
