Wednesday Open Thread

My computer died last night (power supply). I just finally purchased a new one - since the demise of CompUSA it's become tough to find certain things at moment's notice... Here is an Open Thread for you guys!

moment's notice

means the same day :) I can't function without my computer! Otherwise I use Amazon.com, newegg.com, and buy.com for all my computer and other needs. Newegg is good. Buy.com is decent. Amazon is awesome (especially with the Prime membership with 2 day free delivery).

Point taken

I've got backups to all parts of my computer in case one fails. In fact, I've got 3 running right now and one more coming on line in the very near future.

Hilariously bad post at Townhall

about the Oscars representing a "sign of the times" , since the four acting nods went to non-Americans:

We frequently talk about our vanishing culture. The English language, the customs, the American traditions, all slowly evaporating.

It seems to me that realizing that every single acting award at the Oscars went to foreign actors is a pretty compelling sign of the times...

Notwithstanding the fact that all four of those might have been well-earned (and that lamenting the victories of two English-speaking Brits as a symbol of the English language "vanishing" is just too weird for words)...

In 1965, all four of the acting nods went to non-Americans. The year before, two had gone to non-Americans and a third to a Spanish-speaking Puerto Rican. That's seven out of eight in the span of two years. Has "our culture" been vanishing for that long?

This is why bloggers sound so dumb sometimes: a minute's research could have stopped him from posting such an idiotic interpretation.

Congrats...... on your new bundle of joy!

He is already so handsome!

That great! Much love to you and family.

………… parent

Congrats Brendan....

Your hand (I would presume) looks really pale.

………… parent

Wanna make a bet?

That's Mrs. Brendan's hand.  Skin too smooth and milky, veins not prominent enough, knuckles not knobby enough, no hair.

………… parent

I know one thing....

Either, I just insinuated Mrs. Brendan has man hands or you just called out his hands as a bit too feminine.

I get this feeling that I'm the one that will be in the wrong.

Very cute!

Well done. Congrats to you both!

………… parent

You all are so kind...

Just ftr, those are my man hands...they're still pretty swollen up from the pregnancy and all the fluids they pumped into me :)

He looks so much like Brendan, even the nurses were commenting. We're all doing really well.

Thanks so much for all the well-wishing.

………… parent

You did well in bringing

the little miracle into the world.

As a relatively new father also, I know that anyone looks pale next to a newborn. He (the baby) has to establish his warmth outside his mom for the first time, which causes a red, pink and purple look (in addition to the faster blood circulation--have you heard how fast the heart beat is?). And new moms who just experienced labor are bound to be a bit swollen and pale. My wife had an extreme drop in her iron levels after labor and was pale for a week or so (except the glow of love radiating from her maternal heart).

So don't mind some of the people around here who mean well but come across as critical (no offense ATQB). They probably just do not realize the grueling process.

Congratulations and enjoy!

Umm...yeah ...[looks down, kicks dirt]....it's nice to make your acquaintance.

I shouldn't have jumped to the conclusion that you had man hands. I should have considered the possibility that his head was very small.

Seriously, continued well wishes. Enjoy it!

BTW,

there may be a natural or evolutionary reason most babies, even girls, look like their fathers. Both of mine looked like mini-me's (me as in Specter, not Verne Troyer). If you don't have enough to do already, here's an interesting article discussing the phenomenon (it's fairly short).

I just saw

a funny t-shirt on campus. On the front was the Republican elephant symbol and the words "College Republicans.'

The back said, "Join Us Now or Work for Us Later."

I don't know if it is funny because of its arrogance, its use of the false dilemma fallacy, or that it is true (I know GR's and Ender's answer). :-)

It's a bad day for the pro-torture folks.

You know it's bad when Lt. Gen. Michael D. Maples, the director of the Defense Intelligence Agency says waterboarding is torture and illegal under the Geneva Convention in front of today's Senate Armed Services Committee hearing.

Sucks to be pro-torture today I'm guessing. (and what's up with this commie Lt. General saying we have to abide by foreign rule anyway? Maybe he's french. Maybe that's why he's still a Lt. General)

At least according to the Lt General.

I'm sure Torquemada would find you eminently reasonable.

Oh, and did you know that on Good Friday, many Filipinos volunteer to be whipped and crucified (though not to death) as a demonstration of faith and repentance? I guess we can add whipping and crucifixion to GoRights "Not torture since people consent to it" list.

Fascinating discussion over at Crooked Timber

on the Serbia-Kosovo conflict over self-determination and sovereignty. The post itself is short and debatable, but it's pulling hundreds of comments , well worth reading. (Except the digressions into Mel Gibson and Braveheart).

I especially liked this comment , which gets to the core problem with a lot of the discussion about who "deserves" their own country:

[T]his sort of intuitionistic principle mongering, especially in the realm of informal global norms which are rarely buttressed by firm and institutionalized positive and negative sanctions, and which seem susceptible to easy ad hoc modification to suit the latest majority whims and interests of the dominant members of the international community, is no way to decide real questions of international politics.

That's a great point.

In fact, you'll appreciate this:

a short while back I was accused of being a troll (pro-Obama, incidentally!) for ripping into this diary , or rather the article the diarist cites. It's not just that the writing is dense: it's intentionally show-offy, and it mangles the English language. I mean, some of the word usages are outright wrong. This is faux-academism at its worst.

Turns out the author is a college prof. Heh.

Yeah it does have that air.

Ever read the Tao of Winnie the Pooh? I can't remember much of any of it except that it likened such people to the owl character- insecure blowhards that try to compensate by being verbose.

Personally I like writing and reading works with a nice range of vocabulary, but if you can't say something in a fairly straightforward sentence the sentiment was probably bull*&^% to begin with. Eight clauses in a single sentence doesn't make you sound smart so much as desperate...

Gee, I guess McCain COULD win this way! I hadn't considered it since Ohio 04 & Florida 00 are ancient history now.

…………

Whoa!! Ouch!!

Oh, no....not another nightmare-disaster! If McCain wins...forget it!

………… parent

Thank god it's The Onion...still....it HAS happened already...

………… parent

Some stuff does not transcend the generations...

I think it was C&L, but it could have been the Carpetbagger Report, but one site I was reading this afternoon was talking about the McCain rally on Monday where the rightwing radio guy introduced McCain and made a big thing about his middle name. Well the discussion on the thread went to different politicians of our past and someone named off several famous persons & Presidents. The one that caught my thought here was Richard Milhous Nixon. A number of the posters did not know that was his middle name. I was surprised. But then again, lotsa folks who participate in blogs weren't even born when Nixon resigned. Still, for someone who doesn't think of himself as old, there are distinct generational differences among some of us.

Take that talk of the Wii games...Now I know (from freinds) that the Wii is a great video game. I don't play them. None of them. Video games passed me by when arcades went past Donkey Kong. I didn't have the time to learn the new games and play them. I was working or in college or both. Music is another referance point. C&L linked to an old B-52's disc from 1989. To me, that's one of their later records. No one here knew who Blind Faith was yesterday. I know you all know who Clapton was/is. I hope you all know who Stevie Windwood is (Spencer Davis Group/Traffic/Blind Faith/solo stuff. I admit, they're geezers....but I guess they're my geezers.

…………

Uh, that was me

linking to the B52s. :)

And I was 14 when it came out. How old do you feel now?

You know what destroys my brain? There are girls who are legal that were born in the 90s. That's just wrong. These are kids who think of Phantom Menace when you ask if they like Star Wars. They have no concept of a world without google. They think of Picard as the old Star Trek captain. They don't get 90% of Tarantino's references. THEY DON'T KNOW THE HORROR OF "NEW COKE!"

When will the madness end?

Damn kids these days. Get off my lawn you ungrateful bastards with your text messaging. In my day we were lucky to have a token ring network in our school computer lab! And that's the way we liked it.

I seem to have departed from my prepared statement, somewhat. My point is this- there's stuff out there that makes us all feel old.

btw - you think you have it bad? My daughter is 26. When I see babes that are younger than her and hott what do you think goes through my head? Lucky for me, 1) I'm still happy to be with her mother, 2) I've always preferred women to girls, 3) while they may look hot, I have no desire to try to actually talk to a teenager (18+ mind you) on the level that intimacy requires.

Bush Doctrine only applies to us apparently

BAGHDAD — Defense Secretary Robert Gates urged the Turkish military on Wednesday to abandon its invasion of guerrilla-controlled lands in the northernmost reaches of Iraq by mid-March, amid signs that the American and Iraqi governments are increasingly worried that fierce fighting along the mountainous Turkey-Iraq border could widen into a broader and bloodier conflict.

“It’s very important that the Turks make this operation as short as possible and then leave,” Mr. Gates told reporters in India on Wednesday as he prepared to leave for Ankara, Turkey’s capital. His comments appeared to be a departure from earlier American statements backing the Turks in their combat operations against guerrillas from the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or P.K.K.

“I measure quick in terms of days, a week or two, something like that, not months,” Mr. Gates said, becoming the first senior American official to demand a strict timeline for the Turkish operation to end.

story

So, yeah. All that stuff we said about pursuing terrorists in the states that sponsor them? Not so much.

As a bonus bit of irony- why is it that timetables for troop withdrawal are allowed for others but not us? Didn't Gates just encourage the terrorists? Will he be called a traitor by Redstate?

The nail in the coffin

Long tribute to Buckley at Red State that I found pretty amusing, because if Buckley had said some of the things in the comments section at Red State that he had said publicly (like, for example, Bush should resign he is such a failure, or that the Iraq War was a failure, or that the Bush White House was criminal in regards to the Plame affair), Moe Lane would have banned him without giving it a second thought.

From John Cole, recovered wingnut.

I was thinking about Buckley earlier and it struck me that the ultimate condemnation of the utter shambles the GOP has become is this: the highly articulate and intelligent (if deeply misguided) Buckley dies and has to be eulogized by the likes of Coulter and O'Reilly.

William F. Buckley- first and last giant of modern conservative thought.

It's a rather tragic epitaph.
