Weekend OpenThread

I'm sure there are many interesting things going on, but I have no time to link to any of them. Three more weeks left in the semester, then I will join in the conversation a bit more.

What's new with you?

from pico: I'll throw some fun links out to spark conversation...

Headline of the week: Drunk Russian sleeps off knifing :

A Russian man trying to sleep off a night of after-work drinking failed to notice a six-inch (15-cm) knife in his back - until his wife woke him up.

- A Florida anthropologist claims to reconstruct Neanderthal sounds : "part croaking frog, part burping human."

- Experts predict the world 50 years from now , and it's actually kinda boring.

- The world's oldest-known person turned 115 , and boy does she look sprightly! (If we're all living longer 50 years from now, I'm not all that thrilled unless we also combat the effects of aging.)

- The Congo is dotted with newly discovered villages . Difficult terrain had prevented thorough mapping of the region.

Small victory for gun owners ...

NRA Wins Restraining Order Against Philadelphia

Fairfax, VA-In the first round of the latest battle over Pennsylvania’s firearm preemption law, the National Rifle Association (NRA) was handed a victory over the City of Philadelphia, as a Philadelphia County court granted NRA’s motion for a temporary restraining order against the city’s newest gun control regulations.

A judge has ruled that Philadelphia is barred from enforcing the ordinances and moving forward on promulgating regulations. The City opposed the injunction, saying they believed that the ordinances are both necessary and constitutional.

Looking ahead

I believe if the SCOTUS take a narrow view of the 2nd, we may very well see a constitutional amendment clarifying the right of people to keep and bear arms. The amendment would have to come from the states as the Senate couldn't get 67 votes to pass such an amendment.

I certainly believe 38 state legislatures would pass such a measure.

What if

If militias active militias in times of peace were considered dangers to freedom by many founding fathers.

It doesn't make sense to only allow active militia members to have arms.

How are the militias going to be armed if the people cannot have arms for self defense?

A cache to keep weapons would not be pragmatic if the militia needed to be called up quickly, Red Dawn style.

Danica Patrick wins IndyCar race in Japan

Danica Patrick just became the first woman ever to win a major open-wheel automobile race, an amazing achievement for women in sports that electrified the crowd at the Twin Ring Motegi course in Japan.

No longer can she be called the Anna Kournikova of racing -- all looks and no wins.

She gambled on fuel mileage late in the race and hung on to beat Helio "Dancin' With the Stars" Castroneves.

For some reason this topic brought me to remembering John Secada

Anna Kournikova was a great doubles player. Mostly looks and only doubles titles.

Danica needs to get in some Enrique Iglesias videos or John Secada video, fans have waited too long for John to make a comeback.
