N. Koreans taped at Syrian site? - wow, well that is one country that never negotiates in good faith. After so many promises they still behave like a... well Iran. Good job Israel for taking that place out.
Ford surprises with $100 million profit - is Ford starting a comeback? Wish I owned some of their shares in real life instead of just in the virtual :)
Have a great Thursday!

New feature for SC
Tlaloc has kindly agreed to write a weekly series covering science topics. These will be short and sweet pieces on whatever aspect of science he wants to highlight -- current events, history, trivia. Sort of like the weekend art series I started but for science.
The idea is to provide additional content for SC that isn't overtly political, so that there is a wider range of topics available for comment. Debate/discussion will then break down along fresh lines, and people will see a different side of one another.
I imagine Tlaloc would welcome occasional guest postings in his column and I know I would for the art series, so if anyone wants to write a short diary on those topics let us know.

Oh come on
That's no fun.
*kidding*
The only time this site is any fun is when it is overtly political.
As you can see comments fall off without the controversy of the swords clashing.
I'm only half stupid
Heh, no worries, we'll always have political clashes
We had a ~150 comment thread for the PA primary, you're right that people like to talk politics even when they're sick of it.
Still, it's good to have other options too. ATQB's sports diary got a bunch of comments, for example.
Come, my friends. 'Tis not too late to seek a newer world -- Tennyson
That's a great idea, although
I hope he still finds a way to make it controversial. We're having far too few swords crossing in here, what with everyone 'getting along' and stuff.
How about that new Ben Stein movie, eh? Scientists who teach evolution are like the Nazis committing mass murder? I'm sure that would spark some fun commentary!

Yep
Less patty-cake and more swords crossing, please!

I got yer swords crossed

I'll have a few words for you later :)

Bring it on, sister!
No patty-cake for you!

Good idea
I'll be happy (and I'm sure GR will be as well) to point out any errors. :-)
I look forward to the new posts.

Hey Ender
Question for you here
about the server =)
Come, my friends. 'Tis not too late to seek a newer world -- Tennyson
The WaPo has an article out today that says the CIA knew
they were going to be investigated over the interrogation issues
.
It's a good balanced article.
Ya know, I have no real differences with most the professional Armed Forces, CIA, FBI & Justice Department folk. I think that where I take exception to them is the crazies that Cheney and Bush43 put in place to further their Executive Power imperialism agenda. I mean, look at those idiots and what they claim to be "American" values. John Yoo who says the President is above the Constitution & the Bill of Rights, Alberto G who said whatever they told him to say.
Honestly I'm a little aprehensive of General Petraeus being promoted to commander of U.S. Central Command.
He's OK when he only has one thing to concentrate on & that's all he's done. He's focused everthing on Iraq. But the Central Commander has to pay attention to ALL the Middle East and Asia. Fallon did a damn good job of juggling and protecting the Armed Forces from the juvenilles that make up the Executive Branch. I don't see Patraeus having the foresight to see a bigger picture and changing his stance. He seems too ego driven, just like dubya & Darth.
Putin Leaves Western Religon in the Cold
Putin
turns non-orthodox religion into a crime.
You have to register your church with the local government and all proselytizing is considered illegal and cause for arrest.

Ender....this one has your name witten all over it.
What happened to Russia that they're wanting to make Putin another Czar?
stupid people
easily brainwashed by rhetoric. Simple answers sometimes work. It is harsh but there is too much evidence for that. Plus I spoke to some of them through the years.
"To discuss evil in a manner implying neutrality, is to sanction it." AR
Thanks for asking..
I don't think Ender is speaking to me ;-) LOL
Pretty sure he thinks I am a terrorist sympathizer.

Here's a New York Times
article about it.
Why does this all look so familiar?...

Thank you my friend
I was after starting out with this photo
which links to the correct story.
There is a question that at the end of the cold war the countries natural assets got into the wrong hands.
The Russians are flush with cash, while our own country is in debt to everyone.
I thought it was interesting that this is a negation of western style religion, specifically proselytizing.
My curiosity is piqued by the thought of an Obama, Putin meeting.
Putin as gone the dKos route and already insulted Hillary. When asked to respond
to Hillary's statement that he had no soul, Putin came back with, "At minimum a head of state should have a head."
I'm only half stupid
I'm still have to add node to the end of my bookmark to
get through. At first I thought it was an Internet Explorer thing, but I just got on with my Firefox and had to do it with that too.
I don't really care since I can get on now, but I just thought I'd pass it on.
Brendan:
this is a belated reply to something you wrote earlier, about your inability to take certain pro-Clinton sites seriously. I didn't respond at the time because I was going to put together a whole essay about how we process information from partisan sites, but I got sidetracked with other projects.
Anyway, long story short: I had a similar reaction to this
, as much the diary as the comments.
I suggested to Unitary Moonbat (of "History for Kossacks" fame) the possibility of an essay on Trotsky-Stalin-Bukharin for a subtle swipe at the Democrats' primary season. The left has no greater enemy than itself: we'll rip into each other with double the relish of a Republican. Which is sad, but telling.
Saint, n. A dead sinner revised and edited. - Ambrose Bierce
It would certainly be nice
if the pro-Obama posters on dKos showed a little more selectivity in what they push onto the rec list.
The front pagers make sloppy arguments against Hillary too, although their tone is generally a bit more elevated than the diaries.
Come, my friends. 'Tis not too late to seek a newer world -- Tennyson
Well coordinated
sloppy arguments can serve a purpose. Especially if repeated often enough. See War in Iraq.
Love that phrase. 'Would you like another helping of sloppy arguments', said John McCain at his press conference?

Funny that davefromqueens would call someone a liar
He's never let the truth stand in the way of a good smear himself. He's the left-wing mirror image of the American-Spectator-esque smear merchants of the right wing IMO.
Davefromqueens once had a diary that made me defend Sean Hannity
, it was such a lying diary

The Librarian Says "NO"
Every so often I get a slightly dirty look from a librarian when I check out materials geared toward an atheist/agnostic point of view (recently I've checked out The End of Faith, Letter to a Christian Nation, and The God Delusion). Yesterday is when I checked out the latter, and I got a lovely smile from the nice old lady working at my local library.
Oh, how I love the library. It's like legalized stealing.

Atheism/agnosticism
My opinion is that being non-religious, if done properly, involves reading nothing on the subject. If the existence of a higher power is at best unknowable, what is there really to be said further about it? I'm just happy that my Sundays are free and I've never to my knowledge contributed money to pay for a steeple or a stained-glass window. The activist atheists are just turning their brand of atheism into another religion, seems like. And that might be about as many words as I will ever say about my views on religious matters.
skymutt: accept no substitutes!
I disagree
A few months ago, I would have agreed, but I've changed my mind lately.
Sam Harris essentially says that there isn't any good reason why we should just accept that religious beliefs shouldn't be questioned and examined critically and logically. I don't understand why we should give religion the benefit of the doubt, either.
These books aren't necessarily an argument for atheism, which any self-respecting atheist would admit that his atheism is no more than a belief. It's a belief founded in reason, but a belief nonetheless. The books are an argument that when religion is put through its paces, it fails to hold any weight against rationalism.
Why the activists are forced to defer criticism of religion is a question I've yet to hear a good answer for.
I never broke the law; I am the law! --
George W. BushJudge DreddI'm listening to...
I don't disagree with you that much
...but why do I need a book to tell me that? It seems that I've already put religion thru its paces and found it to be not for me.
The activists I speak of tend to be preachy and intolerant-- in other words, very similar to some of the religous leaders they detest so much. They aren't just intolerant of the undesirable deeds perpetrated in the names of the various religions, they are also intolerant of perfectly innocuous religious traditions and practices. There's just no call for it.
skymutt: accept no substitutes!
Maybe we do agree
I don't need a book for it either, but I enjoy hearing other people talk about it.
Hitchens thinks simply believing a creator exists is bad news. I don't. I have problems with religion when it becomes the reason behind suicide bombers and harassment of those seeking abortions. If Catholics really believe they're eating the body of a man who has been dead for nearly 2000 years, I don't mind them having that belief. But I'm not going to go out of my way to pretend that belief isn't the slightest bit mad.
I think some activists come off preachy and intolerant because they sort of have the right to be. As Bill Maher once said, religion is sanity by consensus. For some unknown reason we accept the scientific method, reason, and rationality in all aspects of life except religion. It just doesn't make any sense.

John 3:16 holds the answer to why there are the just in case...
Bill Maher also broached the idea that if we let the gov't restrict people's ability to smoke because of cancer, why not keep people from going out in the sun without sun block.
I also don't understand why many people, Christians included, don't follow all the rules of their faith
.
In our society, people are rewarded for pretending to be certain about things they're clearly not certain about. -- Sam Harris,
Context should matter
Sure there is a good reason. It depends on context.
Telling your neighbor his wife is ugly, his dog has mange, and his kids are no where near as smart as yours might be truthful and accurate, but it would still be a stupid and rather rude thing to do.
Just as much as you hate someone in your face telling you what to believe, people who do follow a religion hate it when you tell them what to believe. And what's the point in telling them that anyway --- to make them feel stupid? Because they certainly aren't going to say "wow, you know, I'm an idiot, and you're absolutely right." Try it on the next Jehovah's witness that comes to your door and see ;-)
If you're discussing what should be in textbooks and taught in schools, or the merits of a piece of legislation, then that's specific and appropriate.
You're in the minority and you get grief from rude people who want to ask you about your lack of belief. I get that that's uncomfortable. And I'd might be rude in return, if I were in your shoes. But I don't know that it's cause to belittle folks who've done nothing to you, for no good purpose.
That's not the point at all
We regularly belittle people who hold all manner of incredible beliefs. We regularly criticize and reconstruct arguments made here for various candidates and policies. Why is religion different? I'm not asking rhetorically, I'm really asking why religion should get a pass but politics, science, and every other field of human endeavor shouldn't.
Your example deals with qualities that are not fixed and are subject to personal preference. This problem deals more along the lines of pointing out things like "Lake Erie is north of Ohio", "George W. Bush is President of the United States", and "Purpleface has an account at Swords Crossed."
I don't have any problem with people questioning my religious beliefs because they stand up to scrutiny and I'm not afraid to say "I don't know" when I don't actually know. Others do have problems with people questioning their religious beliefs. I don't understand why. These same people don't have any trouble when asked about their opinion of historical figures or sports teams. Again, why is religion different?
My and Harris' point is simply that religion (be it mono or polytheistic or even atheistic) shouldn't receive a get-out-of-jail-free card.

Have you ever had a day
when you wanted to gulp down a whole bottle of these:
That's what my day has been like.
If I was working at the post office I would have gone postal today.
Fortunately I get to spend the next three days at Talladega Superspeedway watching cars go very, very, very fast.
qui tacet consentire
I got a $5200 letter from the IRS today
They want to say that my online poker winnings from 2006 are "self employment income" and that I have to pay social security and medicare and all that good stuff on it.
Total fishing expedition on their part. I guess with the war and all, they're coming up a bit short in the treasury, so they have to come after law-abiding citizens like me. The irony of this is that there are scores of people who simply don't report this kind of income because there aren't any 1099's since the the online poker sites are all offshore, and the IRS doesn't do anything about those people. But when you report it, you get rewarded with a big ol audit.
I'm quite sure I won't have to pay it in the end, but it's going to be a hassle cutting thru all the red tape. I might be able to use a Fukitol at some point in the process :-p

Bell Trial: Not Guilty

A barrage of gunfire
against an unarmed black man.
Shooters found not guilty.
I can see why they would over-react, but I can also see how this is going to infuriate many.
Or why there is a 'no snitch' code in some black neighborhoods. Many urban areas see the justice system as completely broken to the point that all black men are automatically assumed guilty.
I'm only half stupid
I don't understand this
I mean, an unarmed guy gets shot to death, 50 bullets fired, the officers testify that one of the targets "made a sudden move" (no weapon found) and that they believed *they* were under fire as they kept shooting (even pausing to reload!)... and that's a good enough defense?
Doesn't sound like justice to me.
Both before
and during
the trial the victims were attacked, as if their past were somehow relevant to whether the police used unnecessary force.
None of the officers even testified -- the judge listened to their grand jury statements.
I hope the city loses the lawsuits. There needs to be some consequences somewhere to make this sort of thing less likely to occur in future.
Come, my friends. 'Tis not too late to seek a newer world -- Tennyson
Granted, a total of 50 shots pumped into an unarmed person,
with a pause to reload their gun(s), is definitely way overkill, not to mention a gross violation of NYPD policy. One doesn't have to approve of the actions of tthe NYPD cops involved in this sordid incident to realize, however, that Sean Bell, having tried to run them down with his car, doesn't sound like such a saint either. The fact that 2 of the cops involved were African-American and that one of the white cops involved was of Syrian ancestry makes things here a little bit more complicated, and all cops, regardless of ethnicity, race or color, are part of this system and of the cop culture, whichever way anyone looks at it. Quite frankly, I think Al Sharpton should stay away, as he always ;managed to add fuel to the fire in these kind of tense situations. Without having been there, or completely knowing every fact, but yet reading and hearing about it, that's my opinion.
Jumping on the pile
Its their duty to protect and serve, not to kill the enemy and make sure no cops might possibly get hurt if a suspect is out and 3 in the morning.
