Apparently we have a military presence in Somalia? Why wasn't I notified?

Car loan delinquencies have hit a 17-year high . Will the auto industry going to have the same problems as the housing industry?

Happy May Day!

We've had a military presence in Somalia for 16 years,

courtesy of the Clinton Presidency.

Also, regarding car loans; the increasing delinquency of car loans isn't surprising, giving the current housing crisis. First one, then the other.

…………

Sounds right

I almost nearly read that as "now that people can't afford their homes, now they're living in their cars -- which they also can't afford".

I pretty much agree. Those who can face an upward ARM adjustment might be feeling just enough of a crunch that they decide not to pay their car loan or perhaps are borrowing from credit cards until better times come a-knockin'.

Actually...

"On the evening of 4 December 1992, President George H. Bush made an address to the nation, informing them that the USA would send troops to Somalia. Known as Operation Restore Hope, the mission would formally become UNITAF. The operations of UNOSOM 1 were suspended.

The first elements of UNITAF landed on the beaches of Somalia amid a media circus on 9 December 1992."

...although I actually supported our intervention in that ccase. Again, however, poorly planned and executed and devolving into a fiasco before we pulled out under Clinton.

In a partial concession to Congressional pressure

the Bush administration agreed on Wednesday to show the Senate and House Intelligence Committees secret Justice Department legal opinions justifying harsh interrogation techniques that critics call torture.

It isn't as big a victory as it sounds. The Justice Dept is still not going to share all their secret opinions & Executive Orders. For instance:

"At the hearing, a department official, John P. Elwood, disclosed a previously unpublicized method to cloak government activities. Mr. Elwood acknowledged that the administration believed that the president could ignore or modify existing executive orders that he or other presidents have issued without disclosing the new interpretation....Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, Democrat of Rhode Island, challenged Mr. Elwood, saying the administration’s legal stance would let it secretly operate programs that are at odds with public executive orders that to all appearance remain in force...The hearing, of a subcommittee of the Senate Judiciary Committee, was called by Senator Russ Feingold, Democrat of Wisconsin. Mr. Feingold accused the administration of a “sinister trend” of promoting “secret law.”

So....the bush43 Administration admits they can order up secret laws and hold American citizens to account for a law no one outside the Executive branch knows about.

I'm curious......what form of democratic government does that fall under? Oh! Yea, I guess it would fall under the totalitarian branch of democratic government.

Sorry but....I wasn't aware that a Democratic government had a totalitarian branch. What else don't I know that bushco won't tell us?

…………

Did you expect anything less?

I'll just chalk it up as reason #2419.3 why Bush should be impeached and removed from office.

Happy May Day

May Day

The holiday dates back centuries to pre-Christian Europe.

Leave a basket of flowers for a special friend to mark the beginning of summer.

And as irony would have it, in my neck of the woods, it's snowing. *sigh*

Also known as International Workers Holiday a day to honor the working class.

This is the day to promote workers rights, social justice and universal peace.

Revisiting tagging conversations

So skymutt, GoRight, and myself have been having a long and in-depth discussion about the Sean Bell case in last Friday's open thread. I would personally find it convenient to be able to easily find these posts in future.

I know that people have had similar sort of conversations in open threads that contain useful information and do a good job of exploring a topic, and it would be helpful for someone just getting interested in that topic to be able to find those conversations. For example "the administration lied about Iraq" debate has been hashed to death.

I would like to have a simple mechanism for "storing" long discussions. I would like anyone to be able to add or modify the links, and I would like it to be organized in an intuitive fashion.

This is sort of in line with the wikipedia-type function we talked about having for SC in the past, but an easier version because there is no need to write anything new, I just want links to past discussion.

Any suggestions? The easier the better =)

…………

Even with our rudimentary search capabilities...

...I do not generally have a problem going back and finding GoRight's past distortions, obfuscations, and prevarications ;-)

But, because our search feature here on this blog generally does a poor job of ranking search results on relevance, I like to use Google to search this site by preceding the search term with "site:swordscrossed.org".  More often than not, what you are looking for will be the first or second item listed.

Example

Another thing which you could do is open up a new special topic for "notable discussion in open threads".  Then, as the discussions happen, you could just make an entry there: "Discussion of the Sean Bell case" or similar and link to the relevant comment thread in the open thread.

………… parent

Let's do both

We can replace the default search with a google sitesearch and for now I like the idea of linking discussions from a special topic, we can always jazz it up later.

By "we" I mean Ender =)

I'll email him over the weekend if he doesn't see this and ask about it.

I've just never subscribed to the theory that Hillary is a lesbian, so this particular madam wouldn't apply in this case. If you think about it, that means I am sort of defending Hillary here! That's just the kind of guy I am. :)

I doubt Dianne even has sex anymore (assuming that she once did ... ok, maybe twice did), so that kind of rules her out too. Especially if you factor in that you probably couldn't even PAY someone have to sex with either of these two. :)

Our Right-to-Carrry is Under Attack!

DATE: April 29, 2008
TO:   USF & NRA Member and Friends
FROM: Marion P. Hammer
      USF Executive Director
      NRA Past President

In the fight for your firearms freedom, the Florida Chamber of Commerce and the Florida Retail Federation were determined to kill Florida's HB503, the bill that protects your right to keep a firearm in your vehicle for personal protection. They even threatened the Legislature and the Governor with a lawsuit. The Legislature was not intimidated -- they passed the bill. Governor Charlie Crist (R) was not intimidated -- he signed it into law. They stood up for you. They stood up for law-abiding gun owners and your self-defense rights against the big business bullies that were trying to eliminate them.

Six days after Governor Crist signed the bill into law, the Florida Chamber of Commerce and the Florida Retail Federation rushed into federal court and filed a frivolous lawsuit to try to have the new law overturned. They had already bragged to the media that they would spend huge amounts of money to fight to negate your constitutional and statutory rights.

On April 16 the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported: "The Florida Chamber of Commerce and the Florida Retail Federation are ready to pay a legal tab they expect to total at least $250,000 to counter what they term an assault on private property rights."

They are relying on Disney, Publix, Walmart and other anti-gun corporate giants to fund their assault on the Legislature, Governor Crist, and on our right-to-carry.

We need your help to raise the money to fight this blatant attack on you and your right to protect yourself and your family.

PLEASE send a contribution TODAY. No matter where you live. No matter what city, what county, what state -- this is a fight that affects all of us. Right-to-carry laws are meaningless if corporate bullies are allowed to eliminate them on a whim.

Click here to send a contribution today.

Wal-Mart To Create Gun Buyer Database

Friday, April 18, 2008

Recently, Wal-Mart joined New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg at a gathering of Bloomberg’s anti-gun group, Mayors Against Illegal Guns, to announce a series of changes to the way in which Wal-Mart handles firearm transactions. At the press event, J.P. Suarez, chief compliance officer for Wal-Mart Stores Inc., said: “The costs are, we think, part of what it takes to be responsible.” Suarez also added, "This is not a signal that we're getting out of firearms."

Once these changes are up and running, firearm purchases at Wal-Mart will involve a video record of the sale, which the store will keep on file -- effectively creating a video database of gun purchasers. In addition, Wal-Mart announced that its employees will be given discretion to deny firearms purchases to anyone who has had a firearm traced by BATFE for any reason -- including those who have had a firearm stolen and later used in criminal activity.

Wayne LaPierre, NRA Executive Vice President, said, “I view it as a public relations stunt that stigmatizes law-abiding firearms purchasers exercising their constitutional freedoms. I honestly think it's a corporation trying to curry favor with politicians as opposed to doing anything meaningful about stopping crime.”

If you’d like to let Wal-Mart know what you think about their new policy, please contact them by phone, at (800) 925-6278; or electronically, at http://www.walmartstores.com/contactus/feedback.aspx .

Wal-mart and guns

I honestly think it's a corporation trying to curry favor with
politicians as opposed to doing anything meaningful about stopping
crime.

Sounds more like a corporation doing what they think is necessary to avoid lawsuits of the "you sold the gun used in this crime" variety. Not that I don't understand why it is a scarily Big Brotherish policy, but I'm not so sure it really qualifies as "anti-gun" more than CYA.

………… parent

It amounts to defacto registration ...

which is a gun owner's hot button topic. First they make you register ... then they use the list to confiscate.

Walmart is probably acting for the reasons you state, but that doesn't make those actions any less anti-gun.

Republican Maverick at Large

………… parent

Well....

The one thing I don't get about gun advocates is that they think someone is going to try and take their guns away. Like some government agent is going to come knock on their door and search their house for weapons at gunpoint. This is incredibly farfetched. And isn't that when you start shooting back, anyway?

That's one thing I've always said about gun owners. The only time they'll take up arms against the government is when the government comes to take their arms. If they were so concerned about rights other than the right to bear arms, we'd have been in a state of continuous rebellion for about 30 years now.

………… parent

Yeah, but

First they make you register ... then they use the list to confiscate.

Such a scenario would require a private corporation to cooperate with the government in an unconstitutional enterprise. Like that would ever happen! And even if they did, surely gun-owners would be able to sue Wal-Mart for such an unconstitutional act, no?

Hmm...

………… parent

Ah

Well, seems to me that Walmart can do what it pleases with regards to its gun sales, and gun buyers are free to vote with their feet and shop elsewhere if they find the policies onerous... right?  Heck I don't like the "club card" at Kroger which creates a spooky database of my grocery purchases, so I shop elsewhere, but I don't claim that it's an attempt ny Kroger to infrige my right to have groceries ;-)

………… parent

Yes they can.

And yes we can.

One of the ways we know to do that is to spread the word. :)

No goods for you!

All 29 ports on the West Coast, including the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, have been effectively shut down this morning as thousands of dockworkers stayed home to protest the Iraq war. The walkout comes two months before the contract between dockworkers and and port operators expires.
