Was slavery in the US really all that bad?

The ancestors of slaves are better off, apparently favicon

I'm also reminded of the words of the great Dennis Lyxzen favicon:

"Rather be dead than alive by your oppression.
Rather be dead than alive by your design.... Rather be alive, Rather be alive."

rationalizing slavery

I've seen this sort of logic displayed by Path Buchannan and David Horowitz. Needless to say, I think it's terribly insulting.

Of course, you can get philosophical about the issue and observe how an apparently evil event led to a seemingly good condition (which in turn, may lead to more evil) favicon

However, the fact that an evil act accidentially resulted in a decent outcome in no way excuses that evil act, nor provides the victim with any reason to trust those who committed the evil act.

Exchanging masters

I very much doubt Douglas was ever really free. He escaped obvious slavery to be part of a much more subtle form. Same one you and I live in.

sublty is nice

First, subtlty is nice. It's another wasy of saying that our "enslavement" is incomplete.

Read Douglass' Wikipedia bio -- it seems like he made a pretty good life for himself. He wasn't in the same boat as all those other freedmen who became sharecroppers or sweatshop workers.
