unless it's very clear with ratings are for (troll ratings strictly for thread disruption, unacceptable language, etc.) and the punishments for misuse of them are severe. Like, "to the gulag" severe.

But I thought it might be easier to encourage people to put a left/right label in their profile now and allow its use later if we ever get around to it.
the rating system is a value system, a shared value system.
basically we'd have to have at least an approximation on what we agree is acceptable or not for the "low end", though at the high end you can just have a set of quick-reply type ratings, such as "funny", "thought provoking", or whatever.
it's hard to know right now what our real traffic is because the transition has been a pain... we were averaging 1000 visits a day for a while, spiking higher for some essays/posts.
I think we should have a running open thread (linked from the frontpage) so people have a place for breaking news, random observations, sports commentary, etc that they don't want to work into a diary but that would be fun for discussion anyway.
Anyone else think this might be useful?

but how will it be perpetually open? Will there be a way to push older comments down, or will we constantly have to scroll down for the newest information?

how that could be done. In the meantime we could definitely just have an open thread every day. Once we are are more acquainted with the code of this software we will be making these modifications. This weekend and coming weekends I will be examining that.

So what should
our mission be? World domination? World peace? Six figure incomes for the front page posters? Inquiring minds want to know!!
yeah I hear ya
I am tired of working for a living myself.

I think you've solved the problem
Of getting more conservative posters.
should we use comment ratings?
I'd be for it
just for hilarity's sake... As long as the ratings didn't actually influence comment visibility or got anyone banned. Also no TU crap :)

that was in reply
to pyrrho about ratings.

Yeah, I'd have to agree;

Another nice 'split-by-wing' case
It'd be very interesting to see which comments received good ratings from only left or only right vs both.
yeah but
I think that would be difficult to program in. I think we should consider that for the future.
For now, if the ratings are enabled but do not count for troll rating or anything else, you would see who is rating what comments and have some idea.

We could possibly
have a system without troll-ratings?
I mean, let's be honest. How many people visit this site at the moment? Is it enough to be worth a troll's time?
Once we're the most powerful force on the internets, then we can worry about trolls.

Very much so,

I am not sure
how that could be done. In the meantime we could definitely just have an open thread every day. Once we are are more acquainted with the code of this software we will be making these modifications. This weekend and coming weekends I will be examining that.
