Friday/Weekend Open Thread
Because days come and go but my feelings for you are forever. Do you think about me now and then? Can you help me remember how to smile? Don't fall away and leave me to myself. What you gonna do when I'm nothing? I'm gonna write you a letter, gonna write you a book...
Open thread to discuss random snippets of lyrics or anything else on your mind this Friday.

U.S.: Israel military sends message to Iran
:
Cool, you can bet that Israel would not allow nukes in Iran.
Well now, since Russia has always held both international law and Israel's safety in high regard, Israel should listen to their wise words.
"To discuss evil in a manner implying neutrality, is to sanction it." AR
In Soviet Russia, government kills you.
As if there is something wrong with killing someone in the UK in broad daylight, international law says a country has to. The UK has no territory in the UK, I guess.
Russia seems to ignore the Iran has made clear threats to destroy Israel and that Iran is trying to take actions that could lead them to actually fulfilling said objectives.
International Law clearly protects Israel's rights to not get destroyed.
In our society, people are rewarded for pretending to be certain about things they're clearly not certain about. -- Sam Harris,
Funny you mention international law.
the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty that both the US & Iran have signed specifically allows signatory states the right to refine their own uranium.
I guess laws are only good when you want them to be.
Bombing Iran only helps the hardcores there. The population doesn't like the current Administration and he'll be gone before any programs comes on line. So why push the people of Iran into the arms of those you don't like? Got an Amageddon jones or something?
I don't think Israel cares, nor should they,
about the people of Iran and their sentiments.
"To discuss evil in a manner implying neutrality, is to sanction it." AR
If the people in Iran were
If the people in Iran were on their way to oust the leadership of Iran, then rallying them around the current administration against an outside "threat" would make no sense. It would be like Napolean France trying to unify the 300+ Germanic nation states because Prussia is too great a threat by itself.
In our society, people are rewarded for pretending to be certain about things they're clearly not certain about. -- Sam Harris,
why should Israel disregard the threat
for the sake of not antagonizing people who already pretty much hate Israel? Even if they didn't hate Israel, why would anyone disregard a nuclear threat?
"To discuss evil in a manner implying neutrality, is to sanction it." AR
I think you're wrong about that
Traditionally Iran has not been an enemy of Israel. The Shah had very close relations with Israel. Under the shah, Iran was Israel's chief supplier of oil.
It wasn't until a radical regime took over that that position reversed. But there is no reason to believe that when a more moderate government comes to power -- as it eventually will -- that hardline stance won't moderate as well.
Iran has the resources and the educated populace to be a major player on the world economic stage -- once they rid themselves of a government that likes to give the rest of the world the finger.
One day enough Iranians will decide that they should be reaping the same kind of economic progress that India is seeing and it'll happen. Bombing them will not convince them to accelerate that process.

Iranians having nukes is too much of a threat for Israel
to consider the feelings of the Iranian people. Besides, conventional bombing of the nuke plants will not mean heavy casualties. Yes, eventually Iranians might regain control of their country, but in the mean time Israel does have to protect itself. They can't wait for that day to come.

"They can't wait for that day to come [in the form of a mushroom cloud]". Oh dear, here we go again.
Maybe the Iranians actually just want nuclear power plants because they want to sell their oil and they are shrewd businessman.
In our society, people are rewarded for pretending to be certain about things they're clearly not certain about. -- Sam Harris,
This is a bit out of date, but
if you're interested here
is some background on why Iran's approach towards building nuclear power plants has generated some suspicion.

Countries Using Nuclear Reactors
57
The list includes, Belarus, Egypt, Pakistan, N. Korea, S. Africa, Kazakhsstan, Russia, and China.
I don't think anyone has an interest in attacking Iran right now. The stock market would go down a thousand points, and the price of oil would be $200 a barrel. Given that our economy is already under a lot of stress the consequences of such actions would be foolish and brash.
Given the mess that IS the Middle East, the refugee crises, and the weariness of bloated rhetoric of machismo, Israel like a peacock is strutting it's stuff, but I think cooler heads will prevail.

debate of FISA compromise
on CSPAN right now. It's not a bad compromise and would fairly easily let telecoms avoid lawsuits. Looks like the Dems surrendered finally. The vote coming up soon and looks like Pelosi joined up with a minority of moderate Dems to push this through.

That's new and different
Looks like the Dems surrendered finally.
Did they ever. On an issue where the GOP doesn't have the votes *and* doesn't have the public support to get what they wanted, the Dems decided it would be swell to backtrack on all their earlier tough talk and just give the GOP and telecoms everything they wanted.
It reminds me of the joke:
Bob: So my wife and I are big on compromise. For example, she wanted a cat but I didn't.
Jim: Oh, how did you work that out?
Bob: We compromised and got a cat.

I'm really depressed about this one.
I haven't heard any good arguments as to why the leadership is allowing this one yet.
There's a reason but they don't want to tell us.
Why bother voting for Democrats when they vote like Republicans?
That was sick
As I said previously on my personal blog:
"Mr. Nader to the white courtesy phone please."
I'm leaning toward Nader now unless Obama picks a really good VP. I even emailed to ask if I could help petition for him (Nader).

well, to be fair
Dems did the right thing. :) It was an ok bill, though I would've preferred an explicit exemption, compromised on by both sides.
Over 100 dems voted for it. I am not sure why the liberals are screaming and jumping off the DNC building.

I guess that means you're voting for Obama in Nov then
since he just said he will vote for the bill.
Here's his link where you can donate money to him.
Since you are now such a HUGE supporter, I know you'll max out your credit cards over there.
it will take a little bit more
to push me over to his side :) I am still hoping GOP might switch McCain out.

Global Warming "Scientist" says GW is increasing earthquakes!

I kid you not.
NewsBusters has a decent overview complete with links to original material

The whole thing is causing serious embarrassment for CBS News and the AP who are finger pointing after having been so ready to print anything GW related. Nope, no media bias here. Nope.

So, where's the catastrophic levels of warming here? More importantly, where's the warming at all?

Since that lil tidbit is every good at explainging global warming as your very large chart, I'll just have to say you are wrong good sir.
Why you think environmental degradation is a political football, I don't know.
Some places would indeed cool

Busy training
I've got a big race in July and prep takes up a fair amount of non-work time. The 99 degree temperatures don't help a bunch. I spent 11pm-3am biking on a trainer cause it's too bloody hot during the day.

Your opinion means nothing.....
unless you started earning a paycheck when you were sixteen, always wear a flag pin, pay federal taxes, and have an e-trade intravenous line to Wall Street investing.
Otherwise you are a non-contributing citizen, a worthless loafer, with likely genealogical ties to a dark skinned shadowy arabs with Palestinian sympathies.
Most importantly if do you not contribute to the capital investment pool that creates freedom in America please shut up forever.
And stop expecting my taxes to pay for your bastard child's liberal indoctrination at a *shudder* public school.
If you mention the color of the democratic nominee, you are a racist, but it's okay to mention that *some* of his friends and *associates* are black, and insinuate that his wife *might* have some hostility issues and uses way too many hand gestures.
