Mistrust!?
The ambassador part awakened ancient memories.

Drilling begins in ANWR!
In a stunning move that's sure to finally bring some sanity and common sense to the US, small mechanized drilling has begun in ANWR. Here are some of the early details..
- It only takes up a small football-and-a-half section of the Reserve.
- Oh, and it's not for oil or natural gas. See here.
One day, we'll take advantage of the vast resources we have here in the US. One day.

hopefully soon
I am optimistic that the new energy package that the Senate Republicans and Democrats are working on (with Webb and Landreu) will include offshore drilling and possibly ANWR. The time has come and more Dems are moving that way.
"To discuss evil in a manner implying neutrality, is to sanction it." AR
I'm indifferent
I'm not completely opposed to any increased drilling, I just don't think it's going to do much in the grand scheme. I'd almost be for it just so the right-wing talking heads shut their mouth about it.
These people as well as the "average American" have no idea how oil drilling actually works. It's not like we can start pumping ANWR for oil in a week or two. And even if we could, we can't drill to energy independence. Peak oil will see to that.
Nuclear as a bridge to renewables. That's the only way to go. Note that this implies our personal transit will largely have to run off the grid. We'll have to ratchet back our total energy consumption and start learning to take the mass transit (where available).

Al Gore suggests we try to get to all renewable energy sources
within ten years.
He says we can do it if we want to and try to in a speech he'll give later today.
Some of us want to. Some of us may try to but I suspect not enough of us to actually get to the goal.
No matter how you look at it though, getting our nation off fossil fuels and into the other types (yes, all other types) will only help us out as a nation. Being held hostage to Big Oil, Big Coal not only drains out pocket books and national treasury but also dirties our air & water.
I know....it's a difficult undertaking. But what are the nay sayers objections other than ridiculing Al Gore and hoping for a better life for our future?
Re: Renewable energy sources
I agree with this. But I think every time we try to come up with something, special interests try to cake it up.
First, we cannot expect to get off of oil tomorrow. Or even in the next 5 years. Or 10. A good start would be to reduce dependence on countries like Saudi Arabia and Venezuela. We can tap resources like Natural Gas to replace dependence on the countries at say..2% per year.
But every time we try common sense measures at alternative energy sources we get pushback.
- We can't do nuclear because "remember what happened in Russia?" (Coal mining accidents haven't halted coal too much though).
- Although the technology is still very expensive, we can't do wind because the NIMBY folks don't want those "unsightly" wind turbines obstructing their views.
- We've tried the government-subsidized ethanol experiment and now corn-based products have gone up pretty significantly.
- Solar is still taking time...
I think all options of alternatives should be on the table--solar, wind, nuclear, clean(er) coal, and yes..oil and natural gas. i haven't been on the earth that long, but I've been hearing the technology-is-5-to-10-years-away argument for some time now. Until that time comes, I think all options should be considered.

And I agree with you too for the most part.
Oil & petrochemicals will still have a place in our lives even if we do end up being able to generate all our electricity through other means. Drilling & extraction will still occur.
We can do nuclear. I fully support research and development to do it better. ie - that's development too, not just research. I think that every region of the country should have a Yucca Mt. site to store/bury radioactive wastes though. It's only fair to share the wealth so to speak.
I'm less concerned about the unsightlyness of wind turbines than I am of the effect they have on the birds. I drive over the Altamont Pass
twice every day so, sorry Ted Kennedy, suck it up and sail right by those turbines. On the bird death issue, they've started using larger fans that turn slower now so that it is much less apt to kill the birds. Gears get the fans RPM's up to electricity generating speeds. They've also been coloring one of the blades black so as to make them more apparent to birds.
R&D in all the alternative methods is going to with us for all human lives for now. That is until we have little compact little fusion devices that every household or neighborhood has one of their own.
10 year time frame? I suspect he's using that riffing off JFK's we can reach the moon in ten years thing. Alluding to the fact that the unimaginable can become a reality, but you have to try to do it to get there.

Satisfied Democrat...
Charles Rangel is no doubt on the subcommittee and is pleased that he received many gifts.

Rangel
lives in my "luxury" building and gave up one of his 4 rent-stabilized apartments. First, rest assured that our building is luxury in the same way the Waldorf-Astoria hotel is "cheap." It was built 50 years ago and looks like a dorm once you get into the dimly lit hallways.
Rangel has had those apartments for at least 15 years (when living in Harlem was considered "brave") so it's pretty funny that now it's an issue. Yeah he's the typical politician I agree, but he'll probably be around until he has a heir to pass his office too.

Hey man, do you think you can swing me a meeting with Rangel? Even in the elevator?

Not Even Close..
Nah man, I'm paying rent-stabilization just like everyone else. Having a studio apartment really does teach you to appreciate space. As for the folks downtown, I don't see how they do it.
Rangel is just a weird dude. Him and Sharpton must have the same hairdresser. I catch him in the elevator every now and again, and he calls me "Young Man" all the time. I think he joked on me once because I (a Southern Transplant) was wearing a heavy coat in 30-degree weather.

Administrators: do you block IPs?
Wow. For the past week, I thought that SwordsCrossed was in serious trouble because I never got a response from the server.
It turns out that this problem is limited to one computer...and it is only for this website. (I haven't had problems with other websites, and I can get through using a different computer hooked up to the same network).
So what's going on here? Did my IP get blocked somehow?
In my expert opinion, you should do what I tell you to do.
not that I am aware of it...
I've never tried to block any IPs and I doubt anyone else here did also, though we'll see if Brendan knows anything about it. That is weird... Does anyone have any suggestions as to what to try in such a situation? Deleting the cookie for SC?
"To discuss evil in a manner implying neutrality, is to sanction it." AR
I couldn't get through from work but could at home.
Eventually i just figured it was the IT folks at work & they had blocked me out from this side.
No matter. Now that I know what's up, I know how to deal with it. It felt kind of scummy though. Most folks use proxy servers to surf the web w/o an ID or to go to blocked adult sites & what not. I'm not embarrassed about where I go. I'm not going places that aren't acceptable to my mother so I just figured, screw those IT guys I'm logging in.
Now I could understand if they blocked out RedState or something, but no....SwordsCrossed is the only site....so far.
Redstate blocked for me..
but luckily not this one. You'll have to tell me One Day about how to use the proxy server thing to get to my favorites sites. (Cracked, Blogger sites, etc.)

I was over there today. My first taste of 3.0.
I was trying to see what they thought about the President saying that he was going to have a representative to Iran. Yea, I know it won't be a full on Embassy or anything, but I just wanted to see what they thought about it. They had nothing on it. No heads exploding today.
Proxy servers. I literally googled proxy server. it came back with a preferred one and a whole group of recommended ones. I picked 007surfer.com. Essentially you go to a site and then you key in what website you want to visit into the web address box and it sends you there using it's server anonomously. It works well. I don't get all the features of this fine site (no going to new comments only) but better than having to wait till I get home from work.
Butthead IT people. I guess I just left my internet on in the background while working & probably just was on this site much of the time. It's weird, I probably read about a dozen sites daily (not religiously, just look at 'em once) so I figure one of the IT programs just clocked too many hours connected.
Too Bad for Me
Tried your idea, but our area blocks even the proxy server sites, calling them "Anonymizers."

haha poor democratic congressman posted his energy plan
on Dkos...
Plan for Energy for Americans
by Congressman Steve Kagen
lol, as you can imagine it is not being well received.
I don't think the liberal bloggers get it yet, that no one cares what they think and that plans that are in the works are going to happen regardless of what they say.
"To discuss evil in a manner implying neutrality, is to sanction it." AR
further question is
why does the congressman bother to post this on dkos??? How stupid can you be to post it there without checking what kind of a reaction it's going to get. Dumbass.
"To discuss evil in a manner implying neutrality, is to sanction it." AR
Well, he posted a couple of rockstar essays
that got hundreds of comments. Might have been hoping for another like that, but wandered into new and unfamiliar territory.
Personally, I think it's a good thing for reps to have direct feedback from readers, even if it's a narrow population. Kagen might take it poorly and decide not to post there ever again (which is what happened with Obama, back in the day), or he might take it to heart that a lot of people thought the drilling option was a bad one.
No idea. I don't know the guy or his district very well.

I all ask you then
Why do dkos members think congress listens to them when there is incredible evidence to the contrary?
It sounds like a pretty much one way communications...
There have to be other methods to increase influence but just calling and emailing congressmen doesn't really work well.
"To discuss evil in a manner implying neutrality, is to sanction it." AR
Fair enough -
but at least you know when a politician responds directly to your comment, that they've read it. Which is better than getting a form letter back, right?
Hardly any politicians blog there anymore, though. Too much like a pack of hyenas, but I'm not sure that's a surprise: this is why we don't have 'real' town halls anymore. Most politicians like to be comfortable and secure in public forums.

They have to be willing to defect
They Kosites and other liberal blogger types do have this odd notion that they matter. So long as they are unwilling to vote for someone with anything but a D next to their name, they will continue to not matter.
Anyone who has taken any classes with coursework in game theory can tell that the Democratic Party v. Democratic activists is a classic game of chicken
. The only problem is that in this game of chicken the activists have said in advance that they're going to swerve.
If a party can take your vote for granted, you have no power to affect their platform. All votes are equally cast and counted regardless of the intent of their maker. If I were to get drunk and randomly cast a vote for Barack Obama (indeed, one may need to be suitably medicated to vote for him), my vote counts just as much as if I made a careful and thoughtful decision to vote for him.
Obama can safely ignore the politics of anyone casting "holding my nose" votes because these people will always vote for him no matter how bad he gets. Somehow by refusing to donate to a candidate or writing sternly worded letters (the favorite pastime of their representatives) they think they're making an impact; well, they aren't. The low-information voter, the swing voter, and the fringe who are willing to defect to a Nader et al. are the ones that will get Obama's attention. There'll be a lot less defectors to Nader and others in the foreseeable future due to the nuclear-level "crash" that happened in the 2000 game of chicken.
I never broke the law; I am the law! --
George W. BushJudge DreddI'm listening to...
there's much more to politics than votes
Votes are a dime a dozen. There are plenty of votes out there, and politicians know how to get them if they have the resources.
That's where activists come in -- they provide (one class of) resources by which candidates can win votes. If the activists decide that they have better things to do with their resources (time and money) than contribute them to a candidate's campaign, then the candidate can run into trouble.
I suspect that this is more important for small-time politicians than for major party Presidential candidates, but any candidate needs to ask himself: who is going to convince their neighbors to vote for me? Who is going help to get out the vote on election day? The money doesn't hurt either; as Obama has shown, small donations can add up.
In my expert opinion, you should do what I tell you to do.
