I think the MSM bothers me most about the elections.
I read two papers this morning & in almost every article they both reprinted from sources such as the AP, Wash Po, LA & NY Times every single one went into excrutiating detail giving the ad lines (McCains ads at least) without even mentioning that the basis of several of the ads are not factual. I mean, we've had eye witness national traveling press (Andrea Mitchell) say Obama wasn't intending on making the GI visit in Germany a photo-op yet the press still dutifully repeats the ads lines without mentioning what I would like to think is something very important there.
Obama's ads conversely were glossed over. In trying to explain the point of his ads, surprise, surprise, they used Republicans to give their take on it all.
The MSM is no longer the fourth branch. Now it's definitely in the tank for one political party and that can never be a good thing, no matter which party the Media Corporations choose. I think part of that problem is the concentration of media under a limited number of corporate entities. We no longer see any independent thought or local viewpoints. It's all seemingly dictated from above. And to their dishonor the writers & talking heads are either dutifully obeying orders or are in on it too. I suspect the latter. I mean, here you have every single one of these blabbering idiots (the press, not the politicians...yea, I know it's hard to tell the difference anymore) making well into 6, 7 & 8 figures...they are part of the current regal class. I think they like it and want to keep it that way.
Indeed
Broadcasters used to feel some sort of duty to provide fair and informative news, even if they took a loss. Now news is expected to make a profit just like all other programs.
The news coverage will be whatever the company thinks will get them the most viewers. This is usually manifests in the form of creating an illusion of a "horse race" when there isn't one and niggling over trivial details like which shoes a candidate wears, how much his haircut costs, and what kind of salad greens he eats at home.

SHOCKED!
As a member of an opposing point of view, I am a little stunned to hear you say what you've said in the above post!
It is no longer an age of integrity with respect to the fourth estate my friend!
I empathize.

Gas is $3.68 here.
I couldn't believe it. I put in $10 since that is as much as my tank would take.

After the motion to adjourn passed, a few Republicans refused to stop debating so the Democrats turned off the lights and microphones. The Republicans are remaining as a publicity stunt to highlight their disagreement with the Democrats' refusal to consider any energy legislation.
I'm getting concerned that Republicans are going to get traction on the OMG DRILL EVERYWHERE energy plan because your average American idiot thinks that it takes a week or two to get oil from a well. Christ almighty, sometimes I wonder if we even deserve to survive as a species because of how incredibly dense we've become over the years.

You probably would onsider me "your average American idiot" then
It's not about getting oil out of the ground in a week or two. It's about jobs, the future tax base, the fees from new oil leases, and ALSO it's about the domestic oil that will start flowing a few years from now, oil that will most certainy still be badly needed by the way.
skymutt: accept no substitutes!
Then, no
Not unless you believe that oil from new leases will substantially lower prices.
The reasons you highlighted are good reasons and can be debated. I've said before that I don't mind increased drilling so long as we don't forget that oil is a finite resource and we need to start moving to renewables sooner rather than later. The money from those leases should be used to develop renewable technology.
We're getting closer and closer to the point where we've missed our chance to move to renewables. Oil in the $250-$300/bbl range would inflate prices enough to stop the economy in its tracks.
A little sacrifice now will be a good substitute for a lot of problems later.

A speech for all time
In little more than two decades we've gone from a position of energy independence to one in which almost half the oil we use comes from foreign countries, at prices that are going through the roof. Our excessive dependence on OPEC has already taken a tremendous toll on our economy and our people. .
. .To give us energy security, I am asking for the most massive peacetime commitment of funds and resources in our nation's history to develop America's own alternative sources of fuel --from coal, from oil shale, from plant products for gasohol, from unconventional gas, from the sun. . . .
These efforts will cost money, a lot of money, and that is why Congress must enact the windfall profits tax without delay. It will be money well spent. Unlike the billions of dollars that we ship to foreign countries to pay for foreign oil, these funds will be paid by Americans to Americans. These funds will go to fight, not to increase, inflation and unemployment. . . .
For fun can you guess who gave this speech.
I'm only half stupid
Yes, Jimmy Carter, and...
...it is funny how this was his solution;
"and that is why Congress must enact the windfall profits tax without delay"
How Democratic of him? YIKES!
The Republicans just want to develop all sources of energy, and unleash the power of American enterprise to solve our problems!
We have always solved problems like this, but we can't do anything if the majority won't let the congress operate?
