Because the FDIC may not have enough funds to cover expected bank failures, they may have to borrow from the Federal Reserve to cover the funds that will surely be withdrawn by the bank's customers. To replenish the FDIC fund, commissioners are considering raising the rates at which banks pay into the fund.
The Census Bureau's income, poverty, and health insurance report is out. Krugman
and Reich
both point out that median incomes are actually lower now than in 2000, adjusted for inflation.
In Sandusky local news, a recent skull found on land owned by the local Wal-Mart was determined to be of a Native American who died over 200 years ago . Interesting.

hey good morning guys
Good to see things are hopping here in my absence :)
Did you guys discuss this already: Bill Clinton in Denver undercuts Obama
?
My mom and dad were positively gleeful about it - big fans of Bubba and looking to vote for McCain.
"To discuss evil in a manner implying neutrality, is to sanction it." AR
Let's see how his speech goes tonight
I'm hoping your folks will find it more difficult to reconcile being big fans of Bubba and planning to vote for McCain after the speech.
Come, my friends. 'Tis not too late to seek a newer world -- Tennyson
somehow that is doubtful
Also, they don't plan on listening to Bubba's speech. Everyone knows it's an obligatory cheerleading. Everyone also knows Bubba does not like Obama.

Bill threw Obama...
...under the bus!

Threw Obama under the bus? The Big Dog was great.
He did Barack really well with that speech.
Red_Wing must be watching Fox (wild guess, eh?). Everyone else says it is real good for Obama.
They will say what they must...
..on stage at the DNC of course, but video don't lie brother, and what you see above is what he's saying outside of those restraints.
The whole DNC has been pretty weak.

Eh, I'm not sure I buy that.
Those kinds of articles are the worst: they don't give us the context of the quote, then they tell us how we're supposed to interpret them based on how they think other people will interpret them. Argh.
One of the commenters at dkos who heard the speech pointed out that the quote was a perfectly innocent answer
to the question that was asked. But you'll enjoy the ALL CAPS hand-wringing that filled up the comments section there. Sheesh.

thanks :)
My parents actually managed to watch Bubba's speech last night and my mom was positively raving about his great intellect. She managed to ignore the whole supporting Obama part.

Pat Buchannon undercuts John McCain
Why Push Russia?
"If we proceed on a course of isolating Russia from the West, keeping her out of the World Trade Organization, throwing her out of the G-8 and ending cooperation with NATO, where do we think Russia will go?"
Has John McCain thought this through? In the words of Gen. Patreous, "Tell me how does this thing end.?"

Contributers/moderators page updated
When the site relaunches and we return to regular series such as weekend art or science I will add a section for those. If anyone wants to do a regular series (weekly or bi-weekly, with no pressure if you miss a post here or there) on a topic that isn't regularly covered in open thread discussions (e.g., history, literature (pico!), military, supreme court, sports, profiles of House members -- anything non-partisan, basically) just let me know.
Come, my friends. 'Tis not too late to seek a newer world -- Tennyson
One more minor bit of housekeeping
I added back the "Of interest" block on the right and updated it.
If anyone sees anything around the net they'd like to spotlight let me know. I'm afraid my own biases will incline me towards pro-liberal links, so y'all will have to help keep that slot neutral overall.

Can the internet "strengthen democracy"?
Not really a new idea, but here's how the founder of craigslist sees it
: people are using the Internet as the platform for tools for elections and governance. Speaking as a nerd, I love the technology, but what really matters is the means by which we all can use the Net to strengthen democracy in the USA. We can address practical problems and also better realize the vision of the Founding Fathers.
He gives some specific examples of what would be nice to have, like citizens being able to report potholes through a webform, people connecting to troops serving overseas, and political leaders escaping the "bubble" by interacting with online communities.
This kind of stuff is usually hand-wavy but is also tough to dismiss. We've got a few people here who participate in Second Life, wonder if they agree with Newmark?

Before "The Daily Show With Jon Stewart" aired the first of its
four shows produced from the city where Democratic National Convention is being held, Stewart gathered a couple of dozen national political print reporters for breakfast, riffed a few funny lines, then read them the media riot act. His message: Stop letting the 24-hour cable networks set the nation's political agenda.
"We've fallen into this false sense of urgency that they create," Stewart said. "That idea that everything is breaking news and that if you're not watching us, you're going to miss this thing.
"But nothing they're saying is of any import because nobody filters it. (Print reporters) are able to step back for a moment and think. They're not. They're just pointing a camera and saying, 'What do you think that is? I don't know. Let's go to 'The Situation Room.' "
"It's about earning your authority back. That gravitas," Stewart told the print journalists. "It's showing an expertise. It's the whole reason you guys are in the business. You're not on anyone's team. You're on our team. And that's what's stopped."
It is indeed ironic that a faux newsman actually needs to tell the MSM where it's cart has gone off the road and is now plunging into a swamp. Do I think it will have any affect on the MSM? Some of the writers, maybe. The Editors & Producers? Hell no. They are the ones who go out of their way to spin everything McCain's way. How do you really defend someone who doesn't know how many houses they own? The MSM did it and they were serious about it. No, now we have the AP, Fox & several important newspapers who are just arms of the Republican media operations.
It's the over the top "I'm in bed with John" that's killing me.
I'm right there with you
This is one of my man pet peeves.
We saw the utter failure of the media to ask the hard questions in the run
up to the Iraq War. And worse 'experts' are bought off to write stories with a bias.
I can't stand the cable media coverage of the convention. I can only watch it for a few minutes without getting a headache.

Ah, Stewart.
I don't like getting too hyperbolic about people, but if I were the type to have personal heroes, he'd be near the top of my list. This is so spot-on:
I've stopped watching CNN because it seems every time we turn the tv on, it's 24-hour Caylee coverage. I'm sure her family is very worried about her, but if you're stuffing a news cycle with that and half your viewers don't know jack about the history and implications of the Georgia/Russia conflict, then you're doing a piss-poor job of being a news network.

Census Data
Interpreting stats is an interesting exercise.
The eternal skeptic/optimist in me perused the choice and selective stats and couldn't help but wonder why the stats were chosen the way they were.
Some stats chosen from 2006 to 2007, others from 2000 to 2007 and so on. Some stats shown as a raw number, others shown as a percentage of the population. No mention of demographic changes that influence numbers. Sub-groups are cited at opportune times, while generalities at other times.
Look, I'm not saying all is rosy. It isn't. These are evolving times. But one stat that I never see getting much attention when it comes to average household income and the like is one that considers the effect of baby boomers
:
"the range most commonly accepted is 1946 to 1964. In the United States alone, approximately 76 million babies were born between those years. In 1946, live births in the U.S. surged from 222,721 in January to 339,499 in October. By the end of the 1940s, about 32 million babies had been born, compared with 24 million in the 1930s. In 1954, annual births first topped four million and did not drop below that figure until 1965, when four out of ten Americans were under the age of twenty."
People never seem to give this any weight or validity as a factor when looking at:
-high employment in the 1970s as many bombarded the work-force in a short amount of time.
-the beginning of an expansion in the mid 80s as the oldest boomers entered prime earning years
-the real explosion in the 1990s as the bulk entered prime earning years (consider the chosen stat above about the increase in median income of $6200 during the Clinton years...gee, I wonder why)
-The leveling off in the 2000s as many enter retirement.
These stats also have an effect on the number of privately insured as many switch to Medicare.
It also affects that stat of "working-age" groups.
There's many, many conclusions that can be drawn both positive and negative. But it's a huge 800lb Gorilla in the room.
Cato
also had some findings to share from its POV. Again, a mixed bag but also don't mention the role of boomers.
One stat that has little Boomer effect is this one:
"
"
One stat that does have a Boomer effect is this one:
"
"
Other notables include:
-the poverty rate of 12.5% is lower than the 13.3% mark in 1997.
-Gini Coefficient of .463 is slightly down from a few years ago and almost identical to a decade ago. Not bad considering that all the Boomers would be putting pressure on that number over the last ten years.
Overall, it's hard to truly argue that America is moving in an unmistakingly wrong direction economically. It's easy to parse stats and make a cheery or gloomy picture. I see a mixed bag influenced by many factors.
Missing Persons Alert!
Have you seen this person?
Name: Hunter Biden
Age: 38
Occupation: Pay to Play With Dad Lobbyist
Last Seen: August 22, 2008
Definitely not mentioned or seen on stage at the Democratic National Convention. All references to his existence were scrubbed from his father and brother's speeches, except vague references to "my brother" or "my son."
Possible Location: Same place they put John Edwards. Could also be visiting George Obama.
