Please put any problems and suggestions here!
This is a new version. I am working on it live. It's not yet finished and I will be finishing it up through Sunday. Please do not hesitate to point out problems or give me suggestions. Also feel free to use the site!
Oh, and the visual style is not set in stone (colors, etc).

by the way
We didn't switch hosting providers yet - so if the site still runs slow, we will consider it soon.

is anyone else getting a few errors when adding a comment?
let me know.
Nevermind - fixed that.

Bizarre
simply bizarre.
Suggestions
Keep it simple. This is a tiny blog. ;)
Get rid of all the colors except the outside soft blue.
Put live discussions on the left with a flag blue header with a soft blue fill.
Put the recent dairies on the right with a flag red header with a soft red fill.
Get rid of the colored stuff in the center. It's too glary and distracting.
Make the headlines black not white. Get rid of the little square box around the number of comments.
Oh yeah and thanks!
I'm only half stupid
what she said, and...
I think I like the new layout (having both sidebars on the right seems more accessible).
However, the colors (and extra lines/boxes) are a bit too much.
In my expert opinion, you should do what I tell you to do.
Praise and suggestions
Praise:
I love the inclusion of the link to new comments in the Live Discussion box. That makes it real easy to catch up with the latest stuff that you haven't read.
I kinda like the color scheme - soft and pastel-ish. Not sure it fits the "Swords Crossed" concept, and it is definitely unconventional, but I like it!
Suggestions:
I think MissL's suggestion about moving the Live Discussions column to the left might be good. I know it is the first thing I look for when I visit.
Add the Home link back to the bottom of every page, as well as the jump to add new comments.
Question:
What will happen to the layout if something like Bird Dog's Surge diary (currently way down at the bottom of the home page), with the images that extend out from the column, were at the very top of the page?
Overall:
Thanks for the upgrade! Looking good!
We are the environment. There is no distinction. What we do to the earth we do to ourselves. —David Suzuki
I added the links on the bottom
As for the "Surge diary" - we will have to format that kind of stuff to fit - there is no way to prevent those big images of running over.
Also I see the typing area is a bit small with letters a bit large - I'll have to adjust that.
Thanks for the response!

Thanks, I am working on it
I'll tone down the colors and remove some of the extra lines. I am somewhat more in favor of having the two sidebars next to each other (maybe a bit narrower to allow more room for the main stuff).
Anyways, thanks for the constructive input. I will implement the changes as the day goes on.
"To discuss evil in a manner implying neutrality, is to sanction it." AR
That'd be cool
If both boxes were smaller and on the right, I could live with that! :)
I like the All American color theme of Red White and Blue, in whatever order.
I'm only half stupid
well I mostly removed the red
Since it wasn't popular. I squeezed the 2 columns on the right - I think it does look better now.
"To discuss evil in a manner implying neutrality, is to sanction it." AR
Much better
thanks Ender! *swak*
I'm only half stupid
The right side is better
I can live with it.
And with the majority of the users being left-of-center, is it any surprise we didn't want any red? ;-)

I'd rather be dead than red!
n/t
In my expert opinion, you should do what I tell you to do.
Not what I'd have done
The right side of the page is too busy for my liking; I prefer left and right side nav bars.
The color scheme is a bit offputting as well ... and it has changed since just a moment ago. Now it's better, but a few areas have light red backgrounds, which is my only complaint now. Too many colors :-).
I'll have a draft copyright policy done by the end of the day for everyone to look over.

I'll remove the red
I have a bunch of other stuff to do with it so we'll see :)

Thanks again.

Thanks for the upgrade, Ender!
While I think of it, can you include my blog in "member blogs"? It's the "Source of Title Blog", http://www.sourceotitle.com/blog.aspx
.
skymutt: accept no substitutes!
And on that note
You can take mine out. I won't be updating it since I'm a front-pager here.

playing around with different editors
I was not a big fan of the previous one - this one is very light, and just dumps the HTML on the screen. Preview function on the far right is very nice. Any thoughts? Or should I go to the previous one? The width on that one was all screwed up.
"To discuss evil in a manner implying neutrality, is to sanction it." AR
I don't notice it
I hand-type all html I need into the window.
I suppose this would be up to the people who use the rich-text options.

Rich text?
We seem to have lost the option to view comments as "rich text" while composing. I liked that, but I can live with the HTML markup (that's like DKos)
In my expert opinion, you should do what I tell you to do.
you already addressed it
I see you already addressed my issue.
Is it possible to delete a comment?
In my expert opinion, you should do what I tell you to do.
No
Only contributor/moderators have the ability to delete comments.
However, you can edit any comment you make up to the point that someone replies to it. That way you can't change what you said.

I'll try another editor later
So maybe people have a choice. :)

voting for articles
I see the box that reports how many votes an article has received, but I don't see the button that allows me to cast a vote. I also don't see the list of people who have voted for an article (is that intentional or not).
In my expert opinion, you should do what I tell you to do.
I forgot to add permissions
You should now be able to click on the arrow to vote. You were able to see who voted how before?
"To discuss evil in a manner implying neutrality, is to sanction it." AR
Vote tab was at top (with view and edit)
Clicking on the vote tab showed who had voted for the article.
As for voting, I now see an arrow (and my cursor turns into pointer finger when I scroll over it), but it takes a minute to register my click.
In my expert opinion, you should do what I tell you to do.
Also is it me, or is the site fairly slow?
I think we need to start thinking of moving to a different host if you guys think it's too slow.
"To discuss evil in a manner implying neutrality, is to sanction it." AR
No problems on my end
Perhaps its just time to update your PC! :-)

Draft copyright policy
Everyone, please provide positive and negative feedback for our copyright policy Ender asked me to work on over the weekend.
Swords Crossed is protected from any copyright violations by the DMCA and the associated "safe harbor" provision. However, it is in bad taste to violate anyone's copyright in the course of discussion. Copyright law does allow for the fair use of copyrighted works for scholarship, criticism, etc., but the line between a wholesale infringement on copyright and a fair use of the material is vague. To that effect, a more concrete, site-wide policy should be put forth.
Quoting policy:
Users should refrain from copying entire articles to Swords Crossed. This is almost always a violation of copyright even if a link back to the original website is included. Instead, users should limit themselves to copying only what is necessary to comment on the article or news event. This can usually be done by quoting or copying no more than two paragraphs of a particular article or web page. When quoting from a book or substantially large article, users should limit themselves to quoting or copying no more than four paragraphs of the book or article. Obviously this rule won't fit everything as some articles will be very short or will require quotation of most of the article, but please use your best judgment.
In addition, users should use blockquotes, italics, or some other method to prominently set apart the quoted portion of their posts from their original commentary. A link back to the quoted article is not always possible, but is highly advisable in most cases.
User copyright:
Users retain the copyright over their original works as is customary under US copyright law, so Swords Crossed is not responsible for any of the works made by users of the site. Of course, utilizing Swords Crossed will necessarily require the copying and transmission of users' works over the Internet, so by using the service users implicitly agree to allow their works to be so transmitted.

Looks good to me.
Covers all the important bases. I think if we were a larger and/or moneymaking website a few other issues would have to go in there, but this is perfect for our purposes.
Maybe a link to fair use law?

No automatic <br> or <p>
One thing I have noticed is that the new "system" doesn't automatically add line breaks like it used to. Now I have to explicitly put in either two <br> tags or a <p> </p> pair to separate paragraphs.
I assume this is not the way you want it.

Because when the site moves ok, it takes me less than a second to open the editor... Was the other editor we used to have (tinymce) much faster?

no
Went faster this time - about 10 sec - just so long as I know what to expect :) Thanks dude.

Link-mangling bug
Ender,
I noticed that trying to post the following link
http://www.grandforksherald.com/ap/index.cfm?page=view&id=D93PHQN80
gave the new system a headache. After linking inline, Drupal decided to make the link
http://www.grandforksherald.com/ap/index.cfm?page=view&id=D93PHQN80
It seems the html conversion code is a bit off, as it is trying to convert ampersands in links into the html equivalent "&" Trying to fix it by hand in the plain-text editor did not help. I'll look into it when I have the chance.

So far I see that it has to convert & into & because apparently "&" cannot exist alone in proper html. Dammit, what is this garbage :) Checking still.

The front page is still too busy
for my taste. Is there anyway to make the space for the main text of the open threads, etc. wider and more spacious?
And I especially don't like having the main text be in colored box. If you want color could it please be a lightershade of grey The main subject page just feels too crowded to me.
Does anyone else feel this way?
I'm only half stupid
let me see what I can do
I still have a fairly long list of things to do, which should partly be addressed this weekend.

Rethinking the "slowness"
Perhaps you're doing a lot of work on the site at the moment, but at times the site is really struggling to keep up. Right now it is doing well, but earlier today I the load times were a bit north of 5 sec.
If you were thinking of upgrading the plan, be my guest, but I also don't want you to have to pay more just to keep anyone happy. I just enjoy having a place where everyone is welcome. Don't throw more money at the site if you don't have it or if it would be put to better use. :-)

Maybe it's not the hosting
that causes lags -- is anything different with caching or whatever, Ender?
The front page in particular seems slow to load for me.
