upon someone, of course. However, the US won't normalize relations with Cuba while Castro is still around, and Cuba can't reform/modernize while being ruled by a dictator. It's fair to say that Castro's death would probably improve day-to-day life for Cubans.

wishing death upon ruthless murderous dictators. I'll go a step further and wish that in his final hours he is reminded of all the thousands of his opponents that he murdered and that he does not die in peace.
Justice is good, though unfortunately in this case Justice will not be done.

It has a history of producing noted poets, musicians and artists far out of proportion to its population. It had a world class university in University of Havana. Though it was never as wealthy as the U.S., it was significantly more prosperous than other caribbean and latin american nations.
who had a mild altercation with a dkos diarist yesterday on this topic? I know a few cuban americans and they are very cool people - all hoping for a swift regime change as well because they know the hell they or their parents escaped.

I'm done with those people. Diary after diary talking about the evil "batistite" Cuban-Americans. Not a single word in our favor. None of them knowing a single thing about Cuba's history, or the history of Cuban-Americans. They don't even seem to know that Batista died several decades ago.
Never mind that when my family came here we spent years living in a tenement in Newark while my dad worked two full-time jobs in NYC, none of us has had to suffer, we are all evil batistite henchmen who came here rich with ill-gotten gains.
Like I said yesterday, after reading that diary, I got a clear sense of where the most dkos users sympathies lay. Absolutely clueless romanticism of communism without knowledge of what it was and is like is very annoying to me as well.

It's just as well, at least I learned a lesson: "The friend of my enemy is my enemy."
The funny thing is that among Cuban-Americans I was very left-leaning.
I don't know why they have the opinion of us that they do.
My dad was born an orphan in Cuba, my mom was one of eight children of a farmer, it's not like they were born into the lap of luxury. My uncles were all bus or truck drivers before they came here. My aunts were all seamstresses.
So they struggle all their lives, make something of themselves, have it all taken away, leave for the U.S., start from scratch, become citizens, do it all over again and now they are the BAD GUYS in the movie?
My father shocked me recently when we were talking and he said "I had to do it twice, and the first time was not so easy!"
I found it surprising that achieving success in the U.S. was easier than in his native country, but then I thought of his two broken arms, and the horrific scar on his right arm, and the time he got worked over with a pipe to the head in his country of birth, and I thought "I guess it was easier here."
The worst he has had to face in the U.S. was coming home from work during the '67 riots.
I don't want to seem unfair but what you said in the other diary unfortunately rings true:
"We're the only minority on the planet for which their hearts don't bleed.
Apparently the sins we committed to merit their disapprobation are being materially successful and politically influential.
One would think those are laudable achievements for a minority group, but they only approve of powerless and poor minority groups."
The asians are in a similar boat because, though a minority, they are very successful and hard working as a group.
It is also why things like affirmative action are very popular among the left - rewarding those who don't deserve it on the basis of superficial characteristics instead of merit. If you have merit and achieved something for yourself, don't look for any more sympathy.
Just another one of my many complaints about the left.
Your family and other Cuban Americans achieved what you have and your achievements should make you proud. Don't let anyone else bring you down.

Why are those hateful comments directed at us? We "bought" ourselves a president?
How have we "gamed the system"? By working ourselves half to death? By becoming educated? I have eight years of higher education, for which I received no financial aid, all but $4k was paid for by MERIT scholarships.
To what other immigrant group could these hateful comments be directed and not result in disapprobation? Instead the hateful comments are applauded.
really interests me because when my family came here my mother could find no work and the best offer my dad got was 50 cents an hour, despite being an accountant educated at the University of Havana.
WHOA did we game the system or what? We got to live in tenements for years, when we finally had enough to move to Florida we did without air conditioning for a decade, no color television, no stereo system, no nothing. Other kids made fun of me because we were poor.
And somehow we "gamed the system"? If that is gaming the system, then the system should not be gamed.

I wouldn't generally wish death

Nature will take its course
If things go as they have been, I would suspect that Cuba will become a play ground for the rich.
If the corporations work it right, maybe they can turn it into another tax shelter, like the Camen Islands.
My cycnicism level is at explode alert.

fascinating history

Cuba was never a playground for anyone.

people who eventually succeed
have "gamed the system" or in some parlance sold out on their socialist values of destitution and victimhood :)

on a slightly hopeful note
We still haven't heard from Castro himself right? Other than that ridiculous written statement that did not inspire communists worldwide.
I am mildly optimistic that we are drawing to an end...

people shouldn't take their categories so literally
basically, we need big bins to put things in and think about them... but obviously it's stupid to paint individuals with group sized brushes.
It doesn't do one's real point any favors... and anyone with experience will see the brush is too broad for subtlety.
just for the record
no one should assume I want him to die, I am indifferent to his medical situation except as a political event.
oh yeah and
you don't even want to read any more dkos diaries about cuba. I just went and read some out of some sick masochistic desire...
