One of the best songs

from an H2 commercial is now the soundtrack to a pro-environmental flash video =)

I don't like Obama's

first part of the solution with imposing standards, but otherwise the rest is reasonable. I think the focus should be providing incentives and tax breaks for car manufacturers to build hybrids and to invest in researching alternative fuels.

I hope various car manufacturers get more serious soon about making fuel efficient and hybrid cars but current fuel prices and an arrival of more attractive hybird choices is already improving the situation.

I have a serious problem with purchasing so much oil from countries that could potentially use our demand as leverage for rather unwholesome goals :)

Automakers

for the most part, have chosen not to see the writing on the wall and have not focused on improving efficiency, and consumers are voting with their feet.  No goverment regulation or subsidy was required. I like it when it works out like that.

Rather than imposing higher standards on carmakers (which might be a good thing too, but not part of my point), perhaps the government should instead educate its citizens about the costs to society so that consumers apply the pressure to the carmakers?  Balance the Hummer commercials with some old-fashioned public service announcements about the cost to our society of wasteful use of oil?

Detroit has already imploded for many reasons but mostly because of bad management decisions. I'm not certain that my tax dollars are well spent covering for bad management.  'Specially since the bad managers probably got really golden parachutes.  And all we got out of the deal is crappy cars.

And, BTW, a nice alternate topic for today.
