and hope that in the near future we are able to vote from anywhere in a secure and easy fashion. That would great. I doubt it will be anytime soon though.
I think it is worth spending money on though and hopefully the whole turn out the vote stuff, fraud and supression will become superfluous.

Cell phone cameras, hot lines, video cameras, the internet, and liberal talk radio to an extent are going to burst open this ugly scab of intimidation and funny tricks (either side).
As the greatest nation we should set the example of having the freest and fairest election to hold up as an example to other countries.
As of now, put me on record as agreeing with Donald Rumsfeld...... democracy is messy!
Let's say they got rid of 22nd Ammendment to the US Constitution. and let's suggest the possibility that the 2008 Presidential election is held with George W Bush running against William J Clinton.
Who would win?
You know I'm going with Clinton. He's still way more popular than Bush is these days, but I want to hear what other of us think & why.
It is definitely his most visible problem, but there are plenty of additional problems (Katrina, corruption, deficit, etc).
I do appreciate your honesty regarding Clinton though. I too think he would win. He has charisma and his presidency seemed to bring a mood of optimism, while Bush seems to bring a sense of frustration and worry/fear.
there is not much of a contest considering what has happened and Bush's approval ratings. Also people's memory fades with time and a lot of people who hated Clinton might not anymore.

I rather like Oregon's vote by mail system. It gives you plenty of time to fill out your ballot at home where you can research the issues and then the ballots are transported by the mail system which (all jokes aside) works pretty darn well. Furthermore since tampering with the mail is a pretty serious federal offense it helps discourage some (not all but some) of the dirty tricks that parties can use.
I really don't trust that any electronic system is going to be anywhere near secure. Look at it this way: corporations tend to jealously guard their client lists from competitors and yet a few times every year we hear about this company or that getting hacked so that information on thousands or even millions of clients is stolen. If companies with huge budgets can't protect their secrets what chance does some rinky dinky state office have?
I would throw Rush in a dumpster with a bullet proof glass window, preferably in the 9th Ward. Fill it with donkey porn, banana peels, whipped cream, and viagra, lock it and let him masturbate himself to death looking at pictures of donkey's asses, while listening to repeat episodes of Randi Rhodes on Air America, as the victims of Katrina, preferably black, walked past and wondered what all that commotion was.
with vote by mail there are no issues of lines turning people away, no issues of weather turning people away, and everyone in the US has postal service.
Boy doesn't she just deserve a round of applause for helping out the Republicans. Clap Clap Clap Ender you should be so proud of your blond
Republican bimbo.
I knew R's didn't play fair. All the reports I am hearing are out of hand.
They don't care either. I am sure they think it is funny to robo call someone every two hours for two weeks and pretend to be a democrat. Or lie and tell them they will be arrested if they don't vote.
Mafia tricks on voting day. What a wonderful example of democracy we are showing the people of Iraq.
Republicans are so desparate in Maryland they are handing out sample ballots describing M. Steele and R. Ehrilich Jr. as get this DeMoCrats.
They are touting steele as a democrat.
Worse they bussed in homeless people to hand out the fake ballots.
After a two-hour bus ride to Maryland, Markle said the workers were greeted early this morning by first lady Kendel Ehrlich, who thanked them as they were outfitted in T-shirts and hats with the logo for Ehrlich's reelection campaign. Nearly all of those recruited, Markle said, are poor and black. Workers traveled to Maryland in at least seven large buses.
I knew it was gonna be real bad. But I didn't think Republicans were so desparate they would pretend to run as democrats and then ship in bus loads of black people to hand them out "so they look like regular Maryland folk".
now than I was a few months ago about Diebold machines in my area. There is a printer that writes out your vote in a sealed glass area of the machine so the voter can verify it before walking off. I can see that this still would not solve tampering with the code, but at least there is physical evidence to track votes if they are contested.
One of my students volunteered to watch the 18 seals on each machine in a row of Diebold machines (about 5 total machines) to prevent tampering. He assured me that it would be a hassle to break the seals without being seen. I do not know if you can tamper with it from the general touchscreen/interface, but I think at least some of the problems were remedied in my district.
Of course, I still used a paper ballot. I don't trust that cheatin' company.

Seems like there are already too many problems

Well paper ballots aren't terrible
as Glenn Reynolds explains here
. But I do hope we start seriously investigating genuine elelectronic voting.

of course
right now Clinton would probably win. Not sure if there is much to explain. Iraq is the only problem Bush has but it's a big one.

Clinton
Of those two choices, Clinton. Bush has too much expensive baggage and has not exactly shown outstanding ability to lead this war.
Thank God for the 22nd amendment. Two terms is enough for any leader.

well realistically
there is not much of a contest considering what has happened and Bush's approval ratings. Also people's memory fades with time and a lot of people who hated Clinton might not anymore.
