Good diary.

Re: "and that's something you're not supposed to think about while you watch the bowl games over the holidays."

Well, it's in my head now!

Thanks

I certainly plan to fully enjoy Penn State's surprise victory in the Outback Bowl... but it is nice to know that PSU is quite good as far as graduating players goes.

Yeah

My school almost made it but Wake Forest took their spot (fairly, I admit). Our school ranks pretty high in our conference in graduating athletes, but there's still plenty of room for improvement.

Neocons get the finger from ISG

Neocons heads now officially exploding!

What no Bolton, no Rummy!!! Agh! And now they want us to talk to our enemies!

As an evil little aside. I am so thrilled that as the neocons would say, "realism" is the new in word.

The best part of the ISG is that it is weeding the neocons out of the strategy for their precious war with Iran.

And if we take the Shiites side to end the civil war........ then are we siding with Iran????

If we take the Sunni side are we siding with Saudi Arabia?

Are we stuck in the middle of a potential war between Iran and the Saudi's? Then how would are soldiers get out? Not pretty.

Oops sorry wrong thread:+)

"Only about 40 percent of Division I-A athletics departments report excess revenues when institutional support is removed from the equation. For everyone else, athletics programs are increasingly supported with institutional funds,” Daniel Fulks, director of the Accounting Program at Transylvania University and the study’s author, said.

Overall, expenses at Division I-A schools on average run $600,000 ahead of revenues with institutional support is removed. That number compares to $3.7 million in Division I-AA, $3.5 million in I-AAA, $1.6 million at Division II schools with football and $1.3 million at Division II schools without football. The study does not include capital costs such as construction and renovation of facilities.

Football profits often

pay for other athletic expenses in Div I-A schools. But yeah, some schools do better than others, and some football programs are a money sink -- doesn't mean people aren't making money elsewhere, it's just the players who don't see any. Setting Title IX aside, nobody is forcing schools to fund particular sports.

Athletic programs

and especially football, also give a school a much higher profile, keep alum connected to the school and stimulate contributions.

And while athletes don't get paychecks, they do get scholarships, a chance to excel at what they do best and memories to last a lifetime.

I wish I had had the chance to be exploited like that.
