Inotherwords, we'd get screwed no matter what.
Since the polls above clearly reinforce my opinions that whether it be the Obama-Biden ticket or the McCain-Palin ticket who'd been elected into the highest office in the United States that we'd continue to get screwed, I have absolutely NO regrets what. so. ever of having gone and done my own write-in ticket on last November's Election Day.
what would a Libertarian Administration look like?
I volunteer to be Drug Czar!
But seriously, it's hard for me to compare the third party candidates to the Big Two because I can't imagine how they would actually govern. With the libertarians, it is especially difficult because they wouldn't really have the option of promoting from within the bureacracy.
In my expert opinion, you should do what I tell you to do.
I don't think it's that hard to imagine
Cabinet members would be reflective of the libertarian-ish values in their respective offiices.
I could see someone like Colin Powell being Secretary of State again....for example.
Defense secretary wouldn't be someone like Rummy...to say the least. It would be someone of ,military/foreign policy background who shares Barr's general views.
Nothing outrageous IMO.
You'd see a lot of vetos on appropriations. A lot of reversals of executive orders and so on.
Bernanke would get heckled and harassed for all his monetary expansion. Further bailouts would hit a dead end.
In practice and reality, it wouldn't be seen as a radical adiminstration....just stubborn.
Oh please.
If by some miraculous manifestation we elected a libertarian, the country would be much, dare I say radically different.
Take immigration for example, drugs, foreign policy, enviromental concerns, everything essentially!
Semper Vigilo, Fortis, Paratus et Fidelis!
Perhaps.
But RADICAL?
I don't know about that. The president is but one man who must go through the bill/law process like anyone else.
He would find sympathy from Dems to get some of the lighter 3rd rails addressed while getting the same from Republicans on other issues.
Right now, I think baliouts would have halted as of 1/21/09 and alternatives means of addressing the crisis would have been introduced. Looking at the stance of the GOP (and some Dems) toward Obama on the bailout, I think enough support might have existed to explore other avenues.
Bernanke would getting heckled almost everyday
There might be some progress on revamping some of the easier drugs laws given the Dem majority.
Easing of immigration restrictions would be a distinct possibility with the Dem majority.
Environmental matters would be pretty much at a stand still....kinda like now
Foreign Policy would be similar to Obama's but with with a firmer stance on pull-outs
I dunno. Radical? Not really.
I think you underestimate the changes...
It would depend on the election results and how strong the new President was, but the D's and R's in Congress would feel pressure to support the 3rd party candidate for fear of not being invited back to the party. If so;
Just the flood of people pouring over the border would be radical enough for me.
Our literal withdrawal from the world in terms of our military assets, and national interests would be the cause of major (radical) repercussions.
The collateral effects of legalizing drugs I believe would be (radically) detrimental to our nation, I think the drug war should be ended, and the military should simply protect our borders.
I would not mind, although many would find it radical to see things that could very well happen in a libertarian administration like;
The end of public education.
The end of the IRS.
The end of the Fed.
The end of farm subsidies.
The end of printing money.
etc.,
Semper Vigilo, Fortis, Paratus et Fidelis!
In the past, when calling in
In the past, when calling in to radio programs hosting various libertarian candidates my biggest question has always been how. How are you going to transition from our current system to that of a libertarian viewpoint? I have not, to date, heard a single plan that I thought was good. Most of my friends explain to me that the candidates cabinet, etc. will sort that all out. But given that all libertarians have to do with themselves all day long, other than talk about how everything around them sucks, is to figure out exactly how they woul do it.
So needless to say I try to spend time thinking about those kinds of things.
I figured this was a good follow-up, stiner
I saw your complaint in the other poll thread so I thought this would be the next best thing...provided everyone is indeed voting for a different pair. :)
IRV style functionality would have been cool.
Wow, this poll shows how out of touch...
...with the real America we as a group at SC are!
Underlying all arguments against the free market is a lack of belief in freedom itself. ~M. Friedman
Or simply more aware of the choices and not afraid to list them
I think this would be a very likely result in a real IRV scenario. It also shows the danger posed to the selfish establishment in an IRV situation.
If people were allowed to pick a #2 or #3 choice after their first choice, I doubt most (or even half) McCain/Obama voters would choose the other if given a ranking order.
The fact that Barr would be a palatable second choice after voters made their first choice is a perfectly logical possibility, IMO.
Speaking for myself...
I voted for Barr second, but would not call him "palatable", so I probably would not make a second choice on my ballot this year. I would be all for instant runoff voting though, and I think it could open up at least some House races to independents and third parties, which I think would be a good start in putting a dent in the present two-party duopoly that is not serving us well at the present.
