Palin accuses Obama of ties to second 'radical professor'

Gov. Sarah Palin on Wednesday said Sen. Barack Obama has ties to a Columbia University professor who she said is "a former spokesperson for the Palestinian Liberation Organization."

[...]

Does Obama know anyone who ISN'T a radical or a terrorist?  I mean people he know BEFORE the start of this campaign, that is.

Lets investigate further

The professor has denied he was a spokesman for the Palestine Liberation Organization.

Ok.  Strike One.

McCain also has connections to Khalidi.

Strike Two.

During the 1990s, while McCain served as chairman of the International Republican Institute, the group distributed several grants to the Palestinian research center co-founded by Khalidi, including a $448,873 grant in 1998 to his Center for Palestine Research and Studies for work in the West Bank.

And, since 1993, when McCain joined IRI as chairman, the group funded several studies run by Khalidi's group in the Palestinian territories, including more than 30 public opinion polls. Khalidi helped found the center, "an independent academic research and policy analysis institution."

How is he a spokesman?

I addressed this here before: the campaign is uncritically calling Khalidi a "spokesman" for Arafat even though he never worked for either the PLO or Arafat himself.  The sole connection - and I'm not making this up - is a book credit thanking them for allowing him access to archives for research.  That and he's ethnically Palestinian.  I guess that's enough to call him a "spokesman", a radical, and a terrorist?

Radical because he's Palestinian?

From the way that Hannity talks about it (and boy does he talk about it), it sounds like this guy is "radical" because he considers it a "catastrophe" that his country lost a bunch of territory in a war, and he resents the country that occupied his homeland. How radical!

...and because he doesn't want partisan hacks knocking on his door with "urgent questions", he must be hiding something.

I wonder if I could pass this "radical test" myself -- I've been known to spend some time with a girl who takes pride in her Irish ancestry and won't drink British beer.

I love how an event from 2003 (KHALIDI's dinner)  is suddenly "breaking news"... just like Gwen Ifill's book suddenly became "breaking news" the day before the VP debate -- even though it had been announced a few months before, and she had done a promotional binge over a month earlier.

An event doesn't become "urgent" just because Fox News and othe Republican hacks haven't done their homework.

Coming from someone in a family that has an inherent distrust of non-Republicans, I can tell you that none of them get that a possible valid reason why the tape is not released is that anti-Obama advocates will intentionally mislead people and break out the Obama is secret Muslim meme even more.

sure it's newsworthy...

I won't deny that it is worthwhile to report on these issues...but it should be in a feature or a documentary...not "breaking news". I just hate how these guys expect everyone else to drop what they are doing (wanting Ifill to resign from the VP debate; wanting this Palestinian guy to do an interview) just because these clowns have decided to "break" some old news the day before a big event (the VP debate and the election, respectively)

will intentionally mislead people and break out the Obama is secret Muslim meme even more.

Regardless of the details, I think it would be irresponsible for journalists to contribute to a story that is likely to be blown out of proportion when we won't have enough time to fully evaluate the story before making our decision.

This seems like just another desparate move by the McCain campaign to sow some confusion immediately before the election -- a sort of "hail Mary" play.

In my expert opinion, you should do what I tell you to do.

Obama full of $h!t...

WASHINGTON (AP) - Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama was less than upfront in his half-hour commercial Wednesday night about the costs of his programs and the crushing budget pressures he would face in office.

Obama's assertion that "I've offered spending cuts above and beyond" the expense of his promises is accepted only by his partisans. His vow to save money by "eliminating programs that don't work" masks his failure throughout the campaign to specify what those programs are—beyond the withdrawal of troops from Iraq.

A sampling of what voters heard in the ad, and what he didn't tell them...

…………

This is weak.

Let's look at the AP writer's "debunking" of Obama's comments:

Many economists are skeptical those savings can be achieved, but even if they are, it's not a certainty that every dollar would be passed on to consumers in the form of lower premiums.

That is Obama's being "less than upfront"???  In other words, "many economists" (none named) think it may not be possible.  Or it might be.  But even if it is, we still face uncertainty.  Or maybe not.

His proposals—the tax cuts, the low-cost loans, the $15 billion a year he promises for alternative energy, and more—cost money, and the country could be facing a record $1 trillion deficit next year.

I'd agree, although the quote they pull also talks about eliminating other tax breaks, which they convenient leave out of their list.  So who's being less than upfront here?

Obama was once and very often definitive about getting combat troops out in 16 months (At times during the primaries, he promised to do so within a year). More recently, without backing away explicitly from the 16-month withdrawal pledge, he has talked of the need for flexibility. In the primaries, it would have been a jarring departure for him to have said merely that "we've got to look at" ending the war

Um.. what?  That isn't even a coherent thought.

The only point they're right about is the notion of spending cuts "above ad beyond their costs", which is disingenuous of Obama.  But it looks like they had one strong point, and desperately tried to stuff in a few weak or incoherent criticisms to get it article-length.

McCain in Sandusky

John McCain is going to be speaking shortly about two blocks down from my house.  I leave to run a few errands and someone stole my parking spot to see Mr. McCain give a speech.  I had to park two blocks down from my normal spot.  Damned Republicans!

I was going to go and do some first-hand reporting for SC, but the friendly police officer said I couldn't go down my sidewalk to see what all the fuss was about.  I had to try a different route.

At that point I decided I didn't care enough to walk around the block.

FWIW, I'd estimate about 3-4,000 people there to see him.  Not a bad turnout considering Sandusky is heavily Democratic (although the surrounding area is pretty red).

More evidence...Even if it is in the form of Billy O

California has begun early voting already as well as mail-in balloting. The number of people who have gone in to vote in person has been extensive. The results so far prove what we had always suspected. The polls are being proven as totally unreliable. Although the results of early balloting have not been disclosed,of course, how many Republicans and how many Democrats have voted has been revealed.

The results are simply shocking. The polls showed Barack Obama with an 18 point lead in California just a few days ago. The results thus far are the complete opposite. In the most liberal state in the entire country, the results are that 99,000 Republicans have voted and 96,000 Democrats voted. In the mail-in balloting the results so far are that 9,000 Democrats sent in their ballots and that 5,000 Republicans did so. So with nearly 210,000 people having voted, the Democrats have only a 1,000 vote advantage !

If we take the liberty of assuming that all Republicans will vote for John McCain and all Democrats will vote for Obama, then the race is incredibly close. I'm sure that Obama will eventually win in California, but if he is struggling here after he pushed so hard for early voting, then he will lose the election ! Everybody thought he would win California in a landslide, but so far anyway,it's very tight. That means that in the less liberal states he is in real trouble.

Liberal Media Bias Confirmed!

A study — funded by the prestigious Pew Research Center, no less — suggesting at first blush, at least, that they may be on to something.

The Project for Excellence in Journalism’s researchers found that John McCain, over the six weeks since the Republican convention, got four times as many negative stories as positive ones. The study found six out of 10 McCain stories were negative.

What’s more, Obama had more than twice as many positive stories (36 percent) as McCain — and just half the percentage of negative (29 percent).

You call that balanced?

OK, let’s just get this over with: Yes, in the closing weeks of this election, John McCain and Sarah Palin are getting hosed in the press, and at Politico.

And, yes, based on a combined 35 years in the news business we’d take an educated guess — nothing so scientific as a Pew study — that Obama will win the votes of probably 80 percent or more of journalists covering the 2008 election.

The NYT's qualms with McCain's piece is that they noticed it was recycled when they saw it. They felt Obama's wasn't recycled.

Fair enough

America used to have journalistic standards, equanimity with respect to media coverage. No longer.

So America then has no journalistic standards and is in the tank for the Democrat in all cases.  I suppose there'd be nothing to do about it except complain or organize private boycotts of liberal media.  There is apparently no law Congress could pass to remedy such a fraud perpetrated by the biased liberal media.  Is this your view?

The market determines the fairness doctrine on its own. If liberals wan to compete, go on radio and compete. It is a stupid law!

That strongly implies that liberals need the fairness doctrine because the market does not respond to their viewpoint on talk radio.  The market desires a conservative viewpoint.

If that is true, then why don't all these newspapers and cable news stations lose readers and viewership because they aren't properly serving the market?  If there was a market for news that wasn't so biased by liberals, wouldn't it exist as it does in talk radio?

McCain gains momentum coming into closing week ...

FOX News Poll: Obama's Edge Over McCain Narrows

The race for the White House has tightened significantly -- with Barack Obama now ahead of John McCain by three percentage points -- according to a FOX News poll released Thursday.

As the candidates make their closing arguments before the election, the race has tightened with Barack Obama now leading John McCain by 47 percent to 44 percent among likely voters, according to a FOX News poll released Thursday. Last week Obama led by 49-40 percent among likely voters.

[...]

The race has tightened in part because of changes in a couple of important swing voting groups. Independents back Obama by 5 percentage points today, down from a 9-point edge last week. Similarly, among white Catholics, Obama held an 11-point edge over McCain last week and today they split 46-46.

McCain's people kicking supporters out of rallys now!

www.iowastatedaily.com/articles/2008/10/28/news/local_news/doc49068f6ccce49245010961.txt

Really....Here's what it says:

"David Zarifis, director of public safety for the University of Northern Iowa, said McCain staffers requested UNI police assist in escorting out “about four or five” people from the rally prior to McCain’s speech.  Zarifis said while the people who were taken out weren’t protesting or causing problems, McCain’s staff were worried they would during the speech.  “Apparently, they had been identified by those staffers as potential protesters within the event,” Zarifis said. “The facility was rented by the RNC for the McCain campaign, so it’s really a private facility for them. We assisted in their desires to have those people removed.”  Lara Elborno, a student at the University of Iowa, said she was approached by a police officer and a McCain staffer and was told she had to leave or she would be arrested for trespassing.  “It was a very confusing, very frustrating situation,” Elborno said. “I said that I had a right to be there, I wasn’t doing anything disruptive — I was sitting, waiting for the rally to start.”  She said McCain staffers wouldn’t tell her why she was being asked to leave and when she got outside, she saw “a group of about 20 people” who had all been asked to leave.  “When I started talking to them, it kind of became clear that they were kind of just telling people to leave that they thought maybe would be disruptive, but based on what? Based on how they looked,” Elborno said. “It was pretty much all young people, the college demographic.”

Elborno said even McCain supporters were among those being asked to leave.

“I saw a couple that had been escorted out and they were confused as well, and the girl was crying, so I said ‘Why are you crying? and she said ‘I already voted for McCain, I’m a Republican, and they said we had to leave because we didn’t look right,’” Elborno said. “They were handpicking these people and they had nothing to go off of, besides the way the people looked.”
