Popular vote is meaningless

So I don't usually make predictions.  However, I can be pursuaded to say that Nader and Barr with both get 2,000,000 votes.  Which will come in 3rd is an open question.

………… parent

I gotta be honest...

I kinda skimmed those threads... enough to get the gist of what was going on, but I didn't actually bother to read everybody's logic on the finer points.  So I don't know if I agree with you or not.

On the general issue I don't get bothered by the use of "Democrat party"; it expresses contempt for the Democratic Party, and is a way you choose to express your opinion-- it is what it is, and when I see some of the vicious vulgarity that I see used sometimes to label political opponents, "Democrat party" seems rather benign by comparison.

If 'Republic party" sounded good, I'd probably use it on occasion when taking potshots.  Unfortunately, it doesn't roll off the tongue nicely. I never use labels like Rethuglican Party, don't like 'em.

………… parent

As it should be ...

you have taken the reasonable path on this specific set of threads.  I suspect most people have done the same.

In this specific case, I mean to say that I think that much ado about nothing is being made of the capitalization meme in these threads and/or its significance to what we do here on a regular basis.  In other words, who cares about the capitalization?  You seem to agree.

For my part in all of this I am simply having fun at my opponent's expense because he seems to care a great deal about the topic as he keeps running on and on and on about it.  I find his arguments on the topic amusing and so, being one to enjoy a good show, I wish to keep them at the forefront for as long as possible.  I don't expect that you much care from this perspective, nor do most others.

………… parent

Don't get me wrong I don't think it's a bad debate to have

I've just been a little amazed at the extent of it, one would think that all other issues centered on this one issue. And quite frankly GR, you look just as silly in the debate ( well, probably sillier, since you're likely wrong) as BR.

My predictions:

Obama wins by 4% in the popular vote, by 337-201 in the electoral college (losing IN and FL, winning everywhere else he currently leads).

Dems (+I) pick up 8 Senate seats (win GA, NC, OR, AK, etc, but not MN).

Dems pick up 29 house seats (ouch).

It just now hit me how important an issue like this is to you.

Elections hardly ever are about issues that hit so close to home.  The most I ever have to worry about is local tax levies that might require the landlord to raise my rent next year due to the increase in property taxes.  Something as personal as a marriage is much more intimate than a tax increase.  Granted you'll always be married to your husband based on your mutual promises to each other, but all the legal rights and benefits associated with state-sanctioned marriage will be gone.

Charles J's Expert Analysis

Here's my predictions, 5 days out, which I may modify before Tuesday morning:

Popular Vote:

Obama - 51%  McCain - 48%

McCain will get the bulk of those undecided voters. There's no way he'll get 44-46% come election day. Obama's numbers are at a ceiling I think.

Electoral College:

Obama - 311  McCain - 227

Obama holds all the Kerry states (including PA, "stunning" all the pundits, who apparently not only have very little knowledge  of statistical sampling, but also a serious lack of trust in the word of the American voter).

Obama pickup states: IA, NM, NV, CO, Soviet Virginia, OH*

Obama will NOT win FL, because..well, it's Florida. The polls giving him NC are overstated, and those "tossup" states like IN, MO (and any state showing Obama average below 50%) will be safely be in McCain's column just before Election Day.

=====

Senate:

Dem=57 (+6), Rep=43

The Democrats will NOT get 60 seats, giving the R team a silver lining to find comfort. The Senate race in GA will end up in a runoff. McConnell will be safe.

======

In closing, I'd just like to see what happens on Tuesday when the Real American® John McCain doesn't get all the voters in Real America. And inexplicably, Dick W. Morris will still have a job.

*Disclaimer: I am not sure about Ohio. Obama seems to be getting some traction in Joe's state, but I don't know. Talk to me on Monday.

Popular vote: 54%-45% as the voters decide overwhelmingly  to wipe the slate clean and start fresh.

58-41 in the Senate as Mitch McConnell gets Daschled.

Democrats pick up 26 House seats.  Jean Schmidt goes down to humiliating defeat :-)

November 4/5, 2008: Obama

November 4/5, 2008: Obama wins big. People pour into urban streets. Someone decides to take advantage of the disorder to break a store window and steal something. A lot more people decide that's a pretty good idea.

December, 2008: Palin gives interviews claiming that the McCain campaign screwed up royally and was afraid to let her do her thing. Does she think they would have won otherwise? "You betcha! We would have won some of those silly socialist blue states as well as all the real states."

January, 2009: Thousands of teenage boys who spent some of that Christmas check from Auntie Whatever on the Who's Nailin' Paylin video find out that it doesn't really star Sarah Palin and are disappointed...briefly.

Sometime, 2009: Sarah Palin's daughter gives birth. Baby's father still around for appearances while the spotlight is on, but doesn't marry the girl...ever. Christian fundamentalists heap praise on both daughter and mother for the teenager giving birth out-of-wedlock. Daughter becomes poster child for abstinence-only sex "education".

Summer, 2009: John McCain (er, I mean Mark Salter with input from John McCain) writes book about how someone with a sincere belief that he's the best candidate for the nation can end up rationalizing his abandonment of just about every principle and conviction he holds in his effort to win. He hopes for redemption via this confession and public apology. People don't buy it (neither the book nor the apology).

Fall, 2009: The people in neighborhoods where stores were looted a year ago complain that there aren't enough stores in their neighborhoods, attributing it to racism and insisting that the government do something about it.

Fall, 2010: Mitt Romney announces, while campaigning in support of Congressional Republicans, that he's an Evangelical Christian, that he always has been, and that any quotes of him that indicate otherwise have been taken out of context. Ashley Todd, now a Democrat, scratches a "W" on her cheek and claims a small white woman mugged her and scratched an "M" on her face for "Mitt Romney".

2012: George W. Bush still looking for someone to ghost write his memoirs.

You see, Obama cannot be the Messiah.

Unification Church beliefs are based on Moon's book, Divine Principle, and draw from the Bible as well as Asian traditions. These beliefs include a universal God; in the creation of a literal Kingdom of Heaven on earth; the universal salvation of all people, good and evil as well as living and dead; and that the second coming of Christ is a man born in Korea in the early 20th century. This Messiah is believed by Unificationists to be Sun Myung Moon.

Why do people always seem to think Jesus is of their nationality?

Jesus is not God Himself, but rather a man born without sin who grew to perfection, an incarnation of divinity, an embodiment of God's nature, a state to which all people were to have grown had there never been original sin.

In our society, people are rewarded for pretending to be certain about things they're clearly not certain about. -- Sam Harris,

………… parent

Whether Jesus is God

is a huge argument in theological circles.

Since the beginning of the third century[3] the doctrine of the Trinity has been stated as "that the one God exists in three Persons and one substance , Father, Son, and Holy Spirit."[4] Trinitarianism, belief in the Trinity, is a mark of Oriental and Eastern Orthodoxy , Roman Catholicism and all the mainstream traditions arising from the Protestant Reformation , such as Anglicanism , Lutheranism and Presbyterianism ; and the Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church describes the Trinity as "the central dogma of Christian theology".[4]

This doctrine is in contrast to Nontrinitarian positions which include Binitarianism (one deity/two persons), Unitarianism (one deity/one person), the Oneness belief held by certain Pentecostal groups, Modalism , and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints ' view of the Godhead as three separate beings who are one in purpose rather than essence.

The doctrine of the Trinity was of particular importance historically. The conflict with Arianism and other competing theological concepts during the fourth century became the first major doctrinal confrontation in Church history. It had a particularly lasting effect within the Western Roman Empire where the Germanic Arians and the Nicene Christians formed segregated social orders.

Which ticks off culturally liberal folk, who are upset 1. because kids from conservative homes are required to be perfect angels who never have sex. 2. If they do mess up and have sex ( I guess they feel like someone stole their idea) and have a child- the baby should have it's skull punctured, and if that doesn't kill it they should abadon it in the hospital to die from lack of care. The Baby will be born into a loving extended familly, which really will make folks mad, because stories where kids from conservative homes, get pregnant and then don't have an abortion just aren't supposed to end well. All of this will make the people who brought up the issue sorry they brought it up in the first place, and they'll decide never to bring candidates kids into politics again - okay, maybe I'm dreaming on that last part.

Heck, he might not even bother to vote-- he didn't show up for McCain's rally the other day, probably because he's tired of being used as a campaign prop.  If he doesn't vote, then I can repurpose my vote to cancel out GoRight, but there again, GoRight could still break for Barr at the last minute to send McCain the RINO a lesson that his type need not apply for the nomination in the future.

Cute, skymutt ...

you keep hoping that I'll do the right thing (from your perspective at least) one day, don't you?  :)

GoRight could still break for Barr at the last minute to send McCain the RINO a lesson that his type need not apply for the nomination in the future.

You don't know the lengths I will go to get you to vote for Barr

Heck I might Photoshop a black Bob Barr.  You just don't know what I might have up my sleeve ;-)

………… parent

It isn't hard

I was able to get my Mom in Indiana to vote for Ralph Nader (and he's only a write-in there).  Of course that isn't too much of a proposition seeing that she voted for Perot twice and Badnarik last year.

In fact the last time she voted for a major party Presidential candidate was Dukakis in '88.

Man, that really would leave a bad taste in your mouth ...

... the last time she voted for a major party Presidential candidate was Dukakis in '88.

I can understand why she's voting the way she is.

She voted for Mondale in '84.

Hi GoRight.

Only difference between God's

Only difference between God's prediction (posted above by me at God's request) and Karl Rove's prediction http://www.rove.com/uploads/0000/0051/McCain-Obama_11_3_08_FINAL.pdf  is that Rove gives North Dakota to McCain, which means that the result from North Dakota will tell us who, if either, truly exists: God or Satan.

Umm, what else are those voices in your head telling you to do?

God tells me not to respond

God tells me not to respond to your comments by pointing out all your errors and assorted absurdities, while Satan encourages me to do so, and both of them have the same rationale: It's cruel to you and wastes my time (a lose-lose). As you can tell, sometimes Satan is more persuasive. Oh well, God will eventually redeem you for your suffering with eternal life in paradise (well, assuming you acknowledge his existence; otherwise you're gonna burn in Hell with me, and by the way, if I'm down there with you, they won't need the fire to make it Hell for me).

As always with all your posts ...

God tells me ...

how rational of you.  :)

Well, if God is perfectly

Well, if God is perfectly rational, I can just outsource my rationality to Him, right? Alternatively, if God makes rationality moot (since His ways are just beyond our comprehension and render our thoughts insignificant at best), then in that case, too, it's best to just go with what God says, right? And fortunately for me, He speaks directly to me very clearly (usually appearing in person, but sometimes via text message if He's having a particularly busy day. Oh, but only I can see the text message and he leaves no record of it). And there have been times when I've doubted His existence, but He reassured me of it, and who would know better than Him, right? So there ya' go :-p

………… parent

The insteresting "rational" position here ...

is your apeal to a supernatural being.  But now that I think about it, isn't this really just another example of you relying on substance that was provided by someone else?  :P

(This is meant in good fun, BTW)

Not just to "a" supernatural

Not just to "a" supernatural being. To THE supernatural being. And He is "The Truth", so case closed, right? By the way, He is my empty Pepsi bottle. He created the universe, He is omniscient and omnipotent, and He tells me what he commands everyone to do and not do (and what the respective punishments are). Oh, and He told me which states Obama will win and which he'll lose. Pepsi Bless America!

Guessing is fun
