Chat here about the surprises (I'm predicting Florida for McCain), the non-surprises (I'm gonna call Pennsylvania for Obama), the exciting (Missouri could go either way), and the dull (gosh, let's stay up to find out which way Hawaii will go). Gripe about the pundits -- in my best Wolf Blitzer voice: "we're almost prepared to make a call, any minute now, we are looking at the latest returns, and the exit polls, and CNN is ready to project, wait, I'm sorry, not yet ready to project, but almost able to call a winner..." Congratulate or commiserate as you get ready for life under President Obama... or, in a stunner, will it be McCain? Put your comments here, and don't forget Stinerman has set up a channel (#SC in IRC room ) for live chat.

When I'm on the above link,
where do I go from there? I'm confused, because it doesn't seem to be working.
Type a name
(like independentminded) where it says "Nick" and then where it says "Channel" put in #SC and click Go. Hope to see you soon! (Although I will only be in chat on and off)

Twitchy hardly describes how I feel. More like nauseously optimistic.
Good luck to us hard core hope mongers!

It's been a long campaign, hasn't it?
Hopefully worth it tonight.

Add South Carolina to McCain....
And Vermont to Obama.
The evening is young.
There's a bunch of people in chat, if any lurkers
want to join in the party. Or however you want to characterize watching the results come in.

I got a lot of rugrats
running around still, but I will soon be able to comment more freely. The ABC projections look great so far. Ahead in Florida and already Penn is projected for Obama. Miss. is to close to call too.
Go Obama!

HUGE!!!!!!!!!!!
I don't know if you people are paying attention, but Obama is projected to win Pennsylvania! That means McCain would have to take most if not all of the other swing states.
Go Obama!

Not true...yet.
No precinct results, that is only exit polls...we'll see.

Hmmm.....
Fox News reported that the exit polls show that 10 percent of all voters are new voters.
CNN
says the number in 2004 was 11 percent.
Where are all the " new" voters?

Case closed, you win. Bummer for America!

Hopefully not a bummer for America
These are tough times and Obama will need to work with Republicans and Democrats alike, should he indeed win. It looks very unlikely that Dems will get to 60 seats in the Senate. The next four years should be shaped with input from both parties, as long as the GOP is willing to "be constructive" in a minority role.
I think that the resulting policies will be practical and reasonable.

Oh Brendan, you are such a sweet guy...
1) The tough times were precipitated by liberal social doctrine.
2) Barry has never worked over the isle, he is a far left zebra, who changed it's stripes for the election.
3) Thank the creater that the Dems do not have 60 seats.
4) You must be on peyote if you do not see the Republicans have been trying desperately to work with Dem's, but Pelosi and Ried are... well, Pelosi and Ried...
It will be a weird world if BO wins.
But you are one liberal who is welcome in my neighborhood anytime...;-)

Heh
Not peyote, just wine ;-)
I'm actually ok with Dems not winning 60 seats. Maybe I'm rationalizing but I do agree with you that some kind of check will be good. Dividing government has a lot to recommend it.

It looks like
a few states are going to go to the wire. Florida, Virginia, and Indiana are keeping it close.

Take heart, RW.
Rejoice in the historic moment and leave the partisan strings behind for a while. The fight will resume soon enough. From a partisan note, this is just the pendulum swinging their way for a while ... but on a national note this is still a reaffirmation of exactly what makes this country so great. Politics aside, even the downtrodden groups among us can rise to the highest office in the land.

I am so deeply moved by this moment in our history.
No I did not vote for Barack Obama because he is a black man, I voted for him because I think he is a great man who has the right qualities to lead our country at this time.
To the skeptics among us, keep an open mind, if you can, and pass judgement in four years.

McCain is magnamimous
in his acceptance speech. He was truly gracious going an extra mile telling his supporters that Barack Obama is now his President too, and that they both love their country. We have to work together on the challenges we face. Very impressive.
I'm only half stupid
Agreed, it was a gracious and helpful speech
And Obama reciprocated by reaching out to McCain supporters. Very encouraging as far as possibilities for bipartisan solutions in the future.

Cool election results maps
With some graphic representations
of this kind of data, too.
And some of those nifty distorted maps
that figure in population or electoral college votes.
Personal favorite: results by county, using shades of blue/red to indicate percentage of votes for Obama/McCain, distorted by population:

Thanks, those numbers are nice to see
I also like those maps -- the one you picked looks like some sort of alien sea monster. Wait, I'm not giving anything
away there, am I?
