Getting back to core values

Arnold Schwanzenegger on Republican core values.

Remember that so many times there's dialogue about, you know, we have to go back to our core values. What is that? What is core? How far does core go back in history in America, the word core? Does it go back 30 years? Does it go back 50 years? Because we know that Teddy Roosevelt talked about universal health care. So they're off the core for a long time ago already. He has talked about protecting our environment. So they've been off for a long time on that. I mean, let's be honest. Ronald Reagan -- let's go to Eisenhower, for instance. Eisenhower has built the highway system in America and he's poured billions of dollars into infrastructure. Where Republicans today say, well, that's spending. We shouldn't spend. That's not spending. That's investing in the future of America.

I agree. Why is it that some Republicans complain that government spending is bad, yet insist that all other spending is considered investment. If we want to succeed, then we have to invest in America, don't we? Investing in America is patriotic, isn't it?

This is the kind of message that resonates with the people and could help give the GOP an image boost.

…………

I don't know what you mean by this statement ...

Why is it that some Republicans complain that government spending is bad, yet insist that all other spending is considered investment.

Because that doesn't seem to be what he is saying.  I think he is rebuking the Republicans for complaining about spending on infrastructure when, in his view, spending on infrastructure is an investment in America.  Somehow your statement seems to suggest the opposite to me, but perhaps I am just not catching the nuance or something.

I think that this is a strawman.  I don't think the Republicans over-all complain about spending on things like highways or water improvement projects.  I know that I consider that type of thing a legitimate role of government so I don't complain about it.  Where you do get complaints is on all of the social programs which are NOT legitimate spending from a government perspective, IMHO.

The nuance

I suppose is the assumption that R's, like McCain go wild over ear marks, as in spending equals big government instead of looking at it as investment in our communities. So I was using the broad brush, of old Republicanism, as opposed to the new revitalized and improved GOP. :-)

I agree Arnold was rebuking the Republicans. I think he asks a good question about 'core Republican values'.

………… parent

I agree with that much ...

I think he asks a good question about 'core Republican values'.

And I think we need to assess what we need to push to the front moving forward, and what to store in the closet. [1]

I would advocate for trying to bring Libertarians into the fold as well, but there doesn't seem to be enough of them to matter.  :-P  Still, maybe we can tone down the social conservatism a tad and backfill any losses because of that with the Libertarians.

[1] Sort of like what Robert Byrd does with that Pointy White Hat of his - only on other issues like social vs. fiscal conservatism since we already know the Republicans are not the party of racism like the Democrats ... umm ... dang you guys just elected a black guy to the presidency ... so much for that knee jerk talking point ... Friends,

I trust everything has been going well in my absence, although I did notice GR and skymutt had a lovers' quarrel. :-)

I'll be in the Columbus area on Wednesday to look for a residence for my upcoming job.  If anyone has time off and would like to meet for lunch (or even dinner), I will be available.

If interested, contact me at nathan.stine@gmail.com.

Paulson back in front of Congress today

Same old story... Congress bullies their favorite scapegoat.  It is a sickening display to see all the finger-wagging from a bunch of do-nothing Reps who collectively have far more culpability for the current mess than Paulson or Bernanke.  It's almost as sickening, in fact, as the hearing last week where they bullied TARP administrator Nell Kashkari, who had been on the job all of three weeks.

When they aren't wagging their fingers, they don't ask good questions, nor do they listen to the answers given to the questions of others.  I'm hearing the same questions asked over and over.

I'm all for acountability and oversight, but this is just grandstanding.  I think we all get that everybody shares in the frustration over the deteriorating economy, and we're past the point where we need legislators throwing tantrums in order to bring awareness to the gravity of the situation.

…………

To dial this back a bit

Let me say that Senator Dodd does a great job at getting his point across in committee without badgering witnesses in a self-righteous manner, and the hearing with the CEOs of the automakers has been constructive so far, in no small part due to the tone that Dodd has set.  I wish more legislators would follow his example of how to conduct themselves in committee hearings.

Especially when you consider that Lieberman is up for re-election in a couple of years. If he wants to get re-elected he will have to embrace Obama's agenda.

Besides as much as it gags some on the left, I think it gags Republicans more that he didn't pull the big switch and go R.

The state of Hawaii has declared that Obama was born in Honolulu on August 4th, 1961.

Are you going to posit that the Hawaii Dept of Health is not the proper authority as to who was or wasn't born in their state?

Every lawsuit about this has been tossed.  And so will Keyes'.   And so will every other one that comes up.   Every reasonable standard of proof has been met.

This issue is over.

Except for right-wing loonies who will accept no proof as being legitimate proof.

They have become like the 9-11 "truthers" on the left.  No matter what proof is placed before them, they won't let the facts get in the way of their conspiracy theories.

Perhaps, perhaps not.

Every reasonable standard of proof has been met.

How about first hand verification of the original document by independent sources?  If the original is there why bar access to it?

Except for right-wing loonies who will accept no proof as being legitimate proof.

I'm not adovocating either way.  Just asking legitimate questions given the doubts to still remain which can easily be quelched by allowing independent sources to observe the original documents.

your "alternate suggestion" is laughable

You won't believe the Hawaii Sec.of Health, but you'll believe the MSM?   Somehow I doubt that.

There's no need to lie.

Coming from someone who is willing to advance a theory that Obama's half-sister Maya - who was NOT born in Hawaii - had a fake Hawaii birth certificate created that was then re-faked to look like it was Obama's.....

Yeah...  you have no standing in the "truth" department.

I survived the Bush Administration

………… parent

He already has...

Here:

www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/born_in_the_usa.html

The fact that right-wing loonies won't accept it is not Obama's problem.

For the record... a "Certificate of Live Birth" has the EXACT same legal standing as an original copy.  It is provided by the state of Hawaii.

My wife has a "Certificate of Live Birth" from North Dakota, because we lost her original copy.  It is as legally binding as the original.

The issue HAS been settled.  This is still "out there" because no matter what proof is provided to the right-wing loonies, it is considered not legitimate.

Just like the right-wing loonies did with Clinton in 1992, they will try to do anything they can to make this Presidency appear to be "illegitimate".  If it's not this, it's something else.

I survived the Bush Administration

………… parent

Not so sure ...

There is still controversy over whether that copy is legitimate or not.  The factcheck version is obviously just a photograph of the original controversial version so that resolves nothing.  Given efforts to cover up and prevent access to legitimate public information (i.e. birth records of the State of Hawaii), it all still has the stench of funny business about it.  And given the positiion we are talking about, the light of truth is in everyone's best interests.

Why doesn't Obama just agree to release his birth records in Hawaii and allow for independent verification when he supposedly already knows what people will find?  That's the real question.

Sigh

I'm not even pursuing this meme as legitimate, my angle is more how best to put an end to it

The point is that there is no way to "put an end to it".

Whatever evidence is produced will be considered to be illegitimate.

Obama could produce a photograph of himself coming out of the birth canal.  In the background would be a calendar showing "8-4-61" and through the window you could see a sign with the name of the hospital and a luau going on in the parking lot and pineapple trees blowing in the breeze....

and the "birth certificate truthers" would still consider it to be untrue.

release the original document to independent inspection

If you don't consider the Hawaii Secretary of Health to be an independent arbiter, then I'm not sure who would suffice.

I know who WOULDN'T suffice.   Alan freakin' Keyes.

Here's a suggestion ...

If you don't consider the Hawaii Secretary of Health to be an independent arbiter, then I'm not sure who would suffice.

How about nationally recognized reporters from three major US news outlets, one of which to include Fox News, and whatever experts they choose to hire to perform whatever non-destructive testing they choose to employ?

Would that make the loonies go away?  Maybe, maybe not.  But it would certainly put the allegations firmly in the camp of the loonies.  As it stands now with access to the original document restricted it just continues to smell of cover-up.  Whether you like it or not, that much is true.

oh, horse pucky

Would that make the loonies go away?

According to you, the loonies believe that Obama's half-sister - who was born in Jakarta Indonesia in 1970 - had a fake Hawaiian birth certificate created for her that was then faked again to appear to be Obama's.

Honestly now... do you think that people that believe that would be swayed by any evidence?

No.

They have a narrative.   They (and apparently you) are willing to make up and/or believe anything in order to advance the narrative.

If you're willing to seriously consider the half-sister angle, then you'd never believe anything that any members of the "MSM" would tell you after examining the certificate - even ones from Fox News.

You actually consider the MSM - who you righties demonize continuously - to be "independent arbiters", and the Hawaii Secretary of Health to not be.

No... this is your "Clinton Death List" all over again.  A narrative to advance that has no supporting evidence, but can be made "believable" to the Low-Information Voters that the GOP has depended on for three decades.

You guys don't even care what shit you invent out of thin air anymore.

Your team, through the cynical use viral emails over many months, convinced 10% of the country that Obama was a muslim.

I want these lawsuits to continue - it makes the GOP look petty and small - especially as judge after judge after judge throws them out as the frivolous lawsuits they are.

You guys actually hitched your wagons to Phil Berg....  a man who claimed that Bush and Cheney arranged for 9/11 to happen on purpose.

That's who you got in bed with on the whole birth certificate thing.

As it stands now with access to the original document restricted it just continues to smell of cover-up.  Whether you like it or not, that much is true.

Oh, bullshit.  Access is restricted because of Hawaii state law.  Here's what you would say if Obama were to ask for it to be released now:

"Why did he wait until now?  Obviously he's covering something up.   This is just too fishy.   And how do we know that the document they produced is authentic?   With enough money, a real-looking fake birth-certificate could easily be made."

Why should he give you the satisfaction of advancing the narrative further?

It's impossible to prove something to a group of people that consider all evidence that is contrary to their opinion to be doctored or fake.

You're NOT this stupid, GR.   You can't possibly be.

I survived the Bush Administration

………… parent

You're not this stupid, PM, really you're not.

Honestly now... do you think that people that believe that would be swayed by anyevidence?

No.

The purpose of allowing an independent investigation into the authenticity of the original document is NOT to convince the tin foil hats, it is to reassure everyone else.  I would have thought that was obvious.

If you're willing to seriously consider the half-sister angle, then you'd never believe anything that any members of the "MSM" would tell you after examining the certificate - even ones from Fox News.

Where have I stated that I "seriously consider" ANY of this to, in fact, be true?  I haven't.  Not once.

What I HAVE done is suggest that the best possible evidence that can ever be provided would be an independent investigation into the authenticity of the original document.  So I am merely arguing that we should provide the best possible evidence now and put the whole matter behind us.

You are the one arguing that we should continue to rely on evidence which provides more tin foil hat fodder than is necessary.  Again, why do you object to independent organizations being allowed to investigate the authenticity of a document which you are convinced is authentic?  What are you afraid of?  Why do you object to eliminating as many possible avenues of subtrafuge as possible and thereby deny the tin foil hats additional footholds?

Logically, your position makes no sense if your goal is merely to put the whole matter to rest as quickly as possible.  Your approach has exactly the opposite effect from the perspective of the tin foil hats making noise.

I'm the Bugs Bunny of Swords Crossed!

Well actually, yes I do ...

You actually consider the MSM - who you righties demonize continuously - to be "independent arbiters", and the Hawaii Secretary of Health to not be.

and that should tell you something, shouldn't it.

The Hawaii Secretary of Health is at the forefront of this if the allegations are true.  They have complete control over the document store in question and they have a vested interest in preventing any such investigation because if the allegations are true and the original document either does not exist or is a fake that office, or employees thereof, would have had to be complicit in the fraud.

So no, I don't consider them to be independent aribiters any more than you would have considered Alberto Gonzales to be an independent arbiter of things going on within the Justice Department.

(And for the record I am making no allegations here either way.  I am merely stating the cold dispassionate reality of the situation.)

No... this is your "Clinton Death List" all over again.  A narrative to advance that has no supporting evidence, but can be made "believable" to the Low-Information Voters that the GOP has depended on for three decades.

That's who you got in bed with on the whole birth certificate thing.

I'm not in bed with anyone on this.  I merely want to get to the root of the matter and determine the truth.  You are the one who is objecting to that.  Kind of makes one say, hmmmm.

Oh, bullshit.  Access is restricted because of Hawaii state law.  Here's what you would say if Obama were to ask for it to be released now:

Why should he give you the satisfaction of advancing the narrative further?

None of which changes the simple fact that an independent examination of the authenticity of the original document is the best possible proof that can ever be provided.  So why do you continue to argue against providing it?

Wrong

The factcheck version has the actual raised-seal clearly evident, proving that it was NOT a forgery.

It also doesn't have the certificate number blacked out.

The "original controversial version" was controversial because it had the id number blacked out and because it was a scan.

In every state in the union, and in every court case ever presented on the subject, a "Certificate of Live Birth" is a 100% acceptable document as proof of citizenship and place of birth.

I know this first hand, because of my wife's situation in which her original was lost and we had to get a "Certificate of Live Birth" from the state of North Dakota before she could get a passport.

Finally.... even if Obama's original WAS released to the public, the right wing loonies would claim that IT is a fake.

Once loonies have a narrative, no amount of evidence will change their minds.

Hence... you STILL have loonies on the left insisting that 9-11 was an inside job.   No matter what evidence is presented to them.

There will be loonies on the right that are CONVINCED that Obama was not born in Hawaii, no matter what evidence is produced.   Producing evidence just has the undesired effect of keeping the story going even longer.

Obama has produced all the evidence necessary to prove he was born in Honolulu on August 4, 1961.  It hasn't been enough for the loonies.  Producing even more evidence won't be enough either.

I suspect that... after inaugaration, we won't hear from them anymore.... except on a few wacko blogs like FreeRepublic.

I survived the Bush Administration

………… parent

Sorry, not good enough.

The factcheck version has the actual raised-seal clearly evident, proving that it was NOT a forgery.

It also doesn't have the certificate number blacked out.

Neither of which proves it wasn't an altered version of the birth certificate of Obama’s half sister, Maya Kasandra Soetoro, as has been alleged.

In every state in the union, and in every court case ever presented on the subject, a "Certificate of Live Birth" is a 100% acceptable document as proof of citizenship and place of birth.

Which is moot if the Certificate of Live Birth is a fake or an altered version of one issued for his half-sister as has been alleged.  Providing access to the original document can easily settle this issue.

Finally.... even if Obama's original WAS released to the public, the right wing loonies would claim that IT is a fake.

Maybe, maybe not.  But it would certainly make their claims even less believable than they are now.

I suspect that... after inaugaration, we won't hear from them anymore.... except on a few wacko blogs like FreeRepublic.

And what would you say if evidence arises from Kenya that he actually WAS born there as has also been alleged?  Just curious.

Thanks for proving my point again

Neither of which proves it wasn't an altered version of the birth certificate of Obama’s half sister, Maya Kasandra Soetoro, as has been alleged.

It has the official raised-seal of the state of Hawaii.   It has been verified by the Secretary of Health in Hawaii.

This statement by you proves my point.  If you believe that this was a fake - despite no evidence indicating such a thing - why would you believe that ANOTHER document presented to you, namely the birth certificate on file with the Hawaii HHS office, is not a fake?

Once you're willing to believe that one document is a fake without any evidence to support the claim, then no document will be considered valid proof.

By the way.... Obama's sister was NOT born in Hawaii.  She was born in the Phillipines.   So the claim that the certificate is an altered version of hers is even too silly by your standards to take seriously.  She was born in Jakarta on August 15, 1970 - when Barack was 9 years old.

Which is moot if the Certificate of Live Birth is a fake or an altered version of one issued for his half-sister as has been alleged.  Providing access to the original document can easily settle this issue.

Think about this, GR.  You are not really this stupid.   You are failing miserably at this.

Obama's half-sister Maya was born in the Phillipines.   In order for your silly scenario to be true, they would have had to first make a fake Hawaii birth certificate for her, and then alter that to make it look like it is his.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maya_Soetoro-Ng

And what would you say if evidence arises from Kenya that he actually WAS born there as has also been alleged?  Just curious.

You're asking me to consider the ramifications of a scenario that cannot exist, based on all the facts that we have.

For your hypothetical to be true:

Obama's mother would have had to fly to Kenya in her 9th month of pregnancy (since witnesses have placed her in Washington State in late July) .... then...

fly back to Hawaii with a newborn - a practice that airlines did not permit at the time..... then.....

Create a fake birth announcement in the local Honolulu papers:

THEN....   have a fake birth certificate created and put on file with the Hawaii Dept of Health....

...all done by an 18-year-old for the express purpose of protecting her infant child's ability to run for President 47 years later.  Because, keep in mind.... even if he was born in Kenya, he was a legal US citizen - just not a "natural born" one - because of his mother's American citizenship.   So she wouldn't have been acting to preserve his U.S. citizenship.

Your scenario is not even possible.   So any evidence that would arise would cause me to be very skeptical.

You... and the conspiracy nuts on the right.... are failing miserably.    You're really going to claim the half-sister thing?

Really?   Do you realize how idiotic that looks?

"Maya, who WAS born outside the country, was given a fake Hawaiian birth certificate that was faked again to appear to be his."   That's the current working theory you're going to go with now?

So the conspiracy

started in 1961 with planting the birth annoncement in the newspaper? WOW. Doesn't it prove beyond any doubt that the forces of the anti-Christ are behind it, as only the Dark Lord himself would be able to forsee and plan something happening almost 50 years ahead?

Sic semper tyrannis

………… parent

Exactly.....

An 18-year-old pregnant girl, had to do this:

1. Even though her marriage to a black man would have been illegal in 16 states at the time, she had to believe that her unborn child would grow up to be President someday.

2. Even though the technology didn't quite exist at the time, she had to know that her unborn child was male.

3. Inexpicably fly to Kenya during the final month of her pregnancy and give birth there.   While there, she all of a sudden realized that this would have ramifications for her unborn child's future presidential aspirations.

4. Because of #3, she would have decided to fly home immediately with her newborn son - a practice that was not allowed by airlines at the time.

5. When she got home, she would have had to lie on a birth certificate application and put a birth announcement in the local papers - just to cover her tracks when the right-wing loonies in this country started looking into it nearly a half-century later.

The loonies would then have you believe that nine years later, when she was living with her second husband and 9-year-old son in the Phillipines, that she gave birth to a daughter - then flew back to Hawaii to fake a birth certificate for her that she could later use to fake a birth certificate for her son when he would run for President in 40 years.

She would have apparently forgot to tell her daughter to lie about her birth, because Maya would spend the rest of her life telling people she was born in Jakarta.

This is the mentality that the right-wing "Birth Certificate Trufers" have.

these facts in the open. They're on to you now. I barely got away last time and only because I was smart enough to use extra havy duty alumnium foil folded twice to shield my brain waves.

Next time use "Catcher in the rye" to encrypt info - any edition will do - I have them all.

If this is all so ludicrous ...

why not just demonstrate that by allowing an independent examination of the original document to determine its authenticity?  You seem to have nothing to lose and everything to gain by doing so.

INdependent meaning

that if the examiners find that the document is authentic, and you disagree with that finding than they are no longer independent. Or you could rave on with claims of   ' activist liberally biased ' examiners.

Hans Blix was an independent examiner and found no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and you to this day refuse to accept his findings.

Which proves nothing ...

It has the official raised-seal of the state of Hawaii.   It has been verified by the Secretary of Health in Hawaii.

If the document was altered after it had been issued for someone else.  What part of that doesn't register with you?

Once you're willing to believe that one document is a fake without any evidence to support the claim, then no document will be considered valid proof.

It is a little thing called chain of evidence.  It is certainly possible that the original document on file in Hawaii is also a fake, but that is far less likely than the possibility of having altered or fabricated a "duplicate" which isn't even an actual copy of the "original".

You try to use that raised seal like it is some sort of talisman which wards off any foul play.  Is it honestly your position that the raised seal of Hawaii cannot be faked or otherwise fradulently obtained?  The seal is an indication that the document was likely issued by the state of Hawaii but it is by no means 100% iron clad proof of anything, especially with regards to alterations which were made after it had been issued.

If the original is there and it says what everyone claims it says, then why hide it in secrecy?  Why shroud it in mystery?  Let the light of truth shine on the document for all to see.  Why the cover-up?  It only fuels the paranoid fears of the tin foil hats.

By the way.... Obama's sister was NOT born in Hawaii.  She was born in the Phillipines.   So the claim that the certificate is an altered version of hers is even too silly by your standards to take seriously.  She was born in Jakarta on August 15, 1970 - when Barack was 9 years old.

Luckily I am not the one making these claims.  I have never claimed that I believe any of this.  However I am someone who is trying to put this whole mess to rest.  Let the original document be examined by independent investigators.  The more you resist the more you fuel the tin foil hats and give them a foothold to spread doubt.

First of all, this is NOT "my scenario."  I have not alleged that this is true.  Ever.  The only reason I raise it is because it is one of the theories that are floating around out there.  The only reason I am even aware of it is because of the snopes.com report that someone pointed to earlier.

Even so, whether the fake is a doctored version of Maya's as has been claimed, or someone else's for that matter, isn't really the point.  The point is that the seal itself does not prevent the alleged forgery.  The possibility of having altered a document issued for someone else which bore the raised seal is a trivial explanation for how a document with a raised seal could have been obtained even when it was a forgery.  Hence the need to NOT rely on duplicates such as this but rather to examine the original document which is the best that can be done to squash these allegations.

Again, this is not my theory.  I am only interested in knocking off as many of these tin foil hat theories as possible in one simple action.

You... and the conspiracy nuts on the right.... are failing miserably.    You're really going to claim the half-sister thing?

Again, I'm not claiming anything.  I am merely reporting what others are saying and suggesting that allowing an independent examination of the original document is the best way to cut through all of this and prove all of these theories to be tin foil hat material.

By examining the original document all this business about raised seals and altered documents becomes completely moot.  If three independent sets of news organizations and experts examine the original document and judge it to be legitimate that is the best form of proof that can ever be provided, so why resist providing it?

As you yourself state the original could already have been faked ... so even the testimony of the Hawaii Secretary of Health is now suspect unless she explicitly conducted an investigatation into the actual authenticity of the original document.  Is she claiming that she did such a thing or is she merely assuming that because the document is in their controlled files that it must be legitimate?  There's some more fodder for the tin foil hats for you.

How to eliminate that fodder?  Allow an independent examination of the original document to determine its authenticity.

Rather than fueling the tin foil hats any further why not cut right to the chase and allow the authenticity of the original document to be determined by independent sources?  It seems obvious to me that this would be the most convincing evidence that could be provided so why not just jump right to that and be done with it?  Avoiding it only allows things to drag on indefinitely and leave a cloud of suspicion over the entire affair.

Texas grand jury indicts Dick Cheney

Not that Cheney doesn't deserve to be hauled off in leg irons, but this is sort of strange.

Yea, I saw that ...

This is the funniest part for me ...

Cheney's indictment on a charge of engaging in an organized criminal activity criticizes the vice president's investment in the Vanguard Group, which holds interests in the private prison companies running the federal detention centers. It accuses Cheney of a conflict of interest and "at least misdemeanor assaults" on detainees because of his link to the prison companies.

His "crime" is that he owns investments which hold interests in private prison companies.  All I can say is, wow, string 'im up!

Ya gotta love grand juries

Most people don't realize that grand juries have immense power. Most grand jurors don't even know that because prosecutors don't tell them.

In many states grand juries can investigate whatever they want and whoever they want, whether the DA wants them to or not. DAs call those runaway grand juries. All it takes is one guy who knows the law getting on a grand jury and being able to lead the panel. Next thing you know the indictments are flying.

Usually a judge will step in and squash such a grand jury like a bug. But every once in a while ...

Prisoners for profit

does that mean the more  folks you get in prison the more money you make?

Willacy County Texas is taking matters into it's own hands.  Sounds like a fun place to live.
