Special pre-New Year edition Open Thread
Israel is making good progress on taking Hamas out. Hopefully they can finally finish the job.
Obama is taking a well deserved vacation after nominating a decent slate to his Cabinet. We'll see how he does.
I am excited about the New Years and hope for an Economic Recovery and positive changes in my own life as well as yours.

You go girl!

-4 Strongly Disagree - 0 Meh - Strongly Agree +4Speaking of Sarah Palin....
.... and her stance on "abstinence only" education (which worked so well for her own family, but I digress)....
"'Virginity Pledges' are ineffective"... so says a new study. Read about it here:

Hate her?
She's my Elvis.
And just like with Elvis, I'm going to love reading about her in National Enquirer over the next few years.

Naw, you sound just like these losers ...
Read the one-star reviews from the hate mongers.
It's just a calendar, dude. Why do you have to piss on everything?

There's no hateful comments on the 'net regarding, say, Barack Obama?

That's hot!
I am a big fan of her looks... Her brain, not as much.

She remains very good looking, but if she truly had had the total package, she would probably be VP-elect right now.

agreed
So what are you up to bud?
"To discuss evil in a manner implying neutrality, is to sanction it." AR
Actually I am mulling over starting law school in the fall
I took a practice LSAT last week and did very well on it, so I'm signed up for that in February. Tuition is obviously a huge issue-- school could cost up to $30k/year at the schools around here, OSU and Capital. Also, my undergrad GPA was only 3.14, which probably is gonna make it tough to get into OSU law school. My job is flexible enough to allow it, but studying would definitely cut my earnings from poker way down. I think I would enjoy law school though, the challenge intrigues me.
We will see-- nothing set in stone yet.

that is pretty awesome
If you want to do it then you should especially since you can clearly afford it. Sometimes I wish I went into Law when I was young :)
The challenge sounds great. What kind of law area would interest you?
"To discuss evil in a manner implying neutrality, is to sanction it." AR
Not too late for you---
You are younger than I am I think :-)
As far as affording it, if that means 'spending my life savings and then doing a cash-out refinance on the crib' to you, then yes I can afford the ridiculously outrageous law shcool tuition...
My interests vary. I am obvioulsy interested in the legislative process, but I'm also interested in law as it pertains to the wheeling and dealing of business. Bankruptcy law might be a lucrative area in the future :-/ I don't know if I could do criminal law... it is interesting to me, but I dunno if I want that kind of responsiblity over people's freedom. I dunno, maybe I've just watched Cape Fear one too many times... but I'm more comfortable dealing with less important things like money.

So, you don't think McCain had any effect on the outcome at all?
:)
I'm the Bugs Bunny of Swords Crossed!
-4 Strongly Disagree - 0 Meh - Strongly Agree +4If you look at the polls...
McCain was just down a couple points in the polls right before he picked Palin. He lost by just about that same margin in November. So you can either see that as evidence that McCain was just a loser from the get go, or you can see that as evidence that Palin in the end did not gain net votes for the ticket. I would argue for the latter in light of the fact that Palin did provide McCain with a significant bounce at the time of the pick, pushing him ahead in the polls, but that bounce withered away after a series of disastrous media interviews by Palin. During this time, McCain was doing nothing remarkable to explain these moves in the polls.
My conclusions:
--McCain was a weak candidate, but not so weak that he might not have won if his VP pick was exceptional
--Sarah Palin was not an exceptional VP pick

Gag gifts, no doubt :-)
You ever done a "white elephant" gift exchange? One of these calendars would be a surefire winner for something like that!

Pokes head up from current projects
huh, imagine that. Palestinians are killing Israelis and Israelis are killing even more Palestinians. Remind me which is the terrorist group and which is the noble state defending its people. I swear I can't keep them straight.
All I know is the bullets lacing palestinian children are minted here in America. That's wrong. If the jews and arabs really want to kill each other I want us to have no part of it.

our bullets
are in many different places. But there are other countries also making bullets. Lots of stuff used around the world could be bearing our manufacturers' name.

I have no problem with providing
humanitarian aid to Israel (and Palestine). What I object to is the military aid we heap on Israel despite their belligerent nature and reckless disregard for civilian casualties. I also don't want to give military aid to the palestinians.
I find it amusing that the right keeps freaking about Iran when Iran has a vastly better record of not starting wars than Israel. Not to mention that Israel has already developed nuclear weapons.

Hamas and the PLO are the problem.
Not Isreal. When the terrorists stop killing Israelis the Israelis will stop retaliating.

-4 Strongly Disagree - 0 Meh - Strongly Agree +4Controlled chaos.....
It's hard not to wonder about the motives of blasting the hell out of Gaza right now, since it seems to be increasing sympathy for Palestinians, not decreasing it. This seems like a move long desired by hardliners of the neoconservative flavor, to promote unrest throughout the Middle East, trying to seize the last possible opportunity under Bush's tenure to foment a war with Iran.

Story of the Year
I nominate the arrest of Bernie Madoff and the ensuing exposure of the unregulated shadow banking system that hides it's loot in offshore accounts.
The ripple effect of this wholly unregulated investment system, while SEC looked the other way, is the story of the year, if not the decade.
The tentacles of this investment scam reach far and wide. They include GMAC, and Leumi Bank of Israel, the bank the allegedly made the margin call that broke Lehman Bros back.
